Grand Bank is quaint. We came here to visit a friend. We traveled the "boot" and were surprised how big it is and how far apart the different towns were. For us, two days was plenty to see and do the things in this area.

Copper Kettle Restaurant is a superb eatery. George served up an especially delectable lobster wrap. The wait was long, but with one server/manager/bartender and one cook, the full house could not have expected much less. It was worth the wait.

There is an excellent provincial Seamen's Museum there, a fascinating architectural walk around Grand Bank, an interactive geological centre in nearby Fortune, as well as a working outport with marina and fish plants. Not too far away are other excellent monuments and museums detailing the history of the peninsula including the tsunami of 1929, the mining of asbestos, and various shipwrecks. If you have children, there is an indoor heated pool as well as an excellent playground in Grand Bank. We liked the fact that there was a medical centre there with 24 hour emergency services. Other things to do include dinner theatres by a regional theatre company, and golfing at a nearby golf course and driving range. This destination is easily worth several days of a traveller's time.

The real criticism should be directed to Saint Pierre. The tourist office makes a real effort but is not supported by the locals. I suspect the French Government feeds lots of money into the economy. The place shuts down for 2 hours at lunch time but unlike in France where you can get a great plat du jour in a restaurant with workers, Saint Pierre closes the restaurants. Unbelievable. If the locals can’t pull their weight the French Government should withdraw the subsidy.
Also, the Canadian Immigration should stop treating people who have a visa and have been through Immigration when arriving in Canada previously, like criminals. I thought the visa and computer system were supposed Link everything together.
