very quiet (=almost dead) off season, shabby, but some delightful places. in 2020 the termes should be finished extending, that will be a nice plus. nice cycling in the mountains, some places to see. good for low key relaxing.
carre des maitres is an excellent little resto/wine bar: the chef has lots of talent and soul. price mid range, and worth it!

we were only there for one night, arrived latish and left early, so can't comment about the town.
The hotel St Jean provided an excellent meal - all local produce and wonderful Ardeche wine.
The town is simple to navigate
The hotel is well located in the centre of the lovely Vals-les-Bains town; it is possible to walk to some good restaurants (we didn't book the Michelin star restaurant in the hotel in advance so missed out on that!); the staff were very helpful and attentive; the rooms were clean and comfortable; the pool is small but fine for the kids when no one else was around!
We were greeted on arrival by a very friendly and down-to-earth manager, not in the least formal or "corporate". The hotel restaurant in the garden terrace was a superb setting, and the food and the service were both very good. Breakfast was also a good variety of fruit, cereals and pastries.
What a lovely hotel, beautifully furnished. We only stayed one night but will definitely be back again. Perfect location in Val les Bains. Friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast was very good. Plenty of free parking. We didn't use the pool but it looked lovely.
We really liked the hotel, its First Republic atmosphere was very pleasant. Very professional receptionist, friendly and ready to help with anything. Also, the lady serving the excellent breakfast was very attentive and caring for our full satisfaction.
The hotel has a very old world feel with simple rooms and decor. The restaurant serves delicious meals and the staff could not be nicer or more helpful. Plenty of secure parking in their garage across the street. It was a simple and wonderful stay.
A good location just a minute walk from the centre of the town and main attractions of Vals-les-Bains. Despite busy we always managed to find parking space at the hotel parking. 24h bar is much appreciated. Nice restaurant for a dinner.
Everything was so perfect : location, staff, cleanliness, comfort, amenities etc ...
