Less touristy than Chania. Located between Chania and Heraklion, makes it ideal for visiting both as well as archaeological sites etc.

Rethymno has the right mix of old town charm, modern hotels, a beach and a nice promenade. Plenty of places that serve authentic Greek food at very affordable prices, nice shopping opportunities, a pretty good beach - overall, I think Rethymno is better than Heraklion or Chania for a vacation stay.

We have stayed here before but last time further out of town...
We have stayed here before but last time further out of town in a villa. This trip we stayed in town within walking distance of everything. There are so many different restaurants we could have stayed for six months to sample them all. Would recommend finding the little tavernas up the little side streets for the most interesting dishes. House wine is great value and nearly always decent. If you want to splash out a bit a private boat rental to take you up the coast is well worth it and can be found in the old harbour from a number of vendors. If you like a beach there is a fantastic one that stretches from the East end of town. And if you don't like the sand there are some steps to access the rocky area of the sea to the west of the castle.ArtscottUnited Kingdom

The place is extremely well-maintained and clean. The shower was perfect, for example. The most important feature though was the helpfulness of the owners, who treat everyone graciously and are available for any questions. Their advice was very helpful, and the pastries they made to great us were superb! We would strongly recommend this apartment.

The room was spotless and cleaned every day, fresh towels etc. Giannis went above and beyond to make us welcome and nothing was to much trouble for him. He also provided tea,coffee, sugar, Raki, wine, boiled eggs and his mother's beautiful home made cake, really nice touch. We were there for 10 days really enjoyed our stay.
