Onomichi Royal Hotel, hotel in Onomichi

Renovated in March 2018, Royal Hotel is located 1 km from JR Onomichi Train Station. The property provides rooms with free WiFi and an en suite bathroom.

Great location, in the heart of Onomichi! Short walking distance to convenience stores, ramen restaurants and the famous Onomichi walking/shopping mall. The staff were very kind and helpful, providing maps and places to rent bikes for the Shimanami Kaido. The room was cosy, had Japanese TV and the beds were clean and comfortable. I also enjoyed the humidifier/air purifier. Great place to stay for people wanting to go cycling or try the famous Onomichi Ramen!

urashima INN - GANGI -, hotel in Onomichi

Located in Onomichi, less than 1 km from Onomichi History Museum, urashima INN - GANGI - features views of the sea.

This is a modern, funky, fresh hotel. It IS tiny. But we were very comfortable with the twin beds and great little bathroom. And the view was awesome. You’ve just got to sit upright on the beds to see it! There is a very small but neat little fridge on the wall. Just fit our small carton of milk and some yoghurts in it. Great shelf above the bed for devices etc. awesome sized shower in that small bathroom. And you could open the room’s window for some fresh air. The location is really convenient for the shopping arcade, station and ferries.

yubune, hotel in Onomichi

Situated conveniently in the Ikuchi Island district of Onomichi, yubune is set 25 km from Oogamiyama Omoto Shrine, 27 km from Saikon-ji Temple and 31 km from Saikokuji Temple.

Beautiful and comfortable room, the hotel has a beautiful minimal design inside. The staff is extremely kind and helpful for anything. Beds are very comfortable and the shower is amazing. I won’t add any picture as the ones on booking are 100% accurate. No need to book the breakfast, there is a grocery about 1km from the hotel where u can get what you need for the next morning, while be mindful cafes in town opens around 10-11AM. The hotel is in a great location, in the heart of the village, few steps from the seaside. It’s also great location for cycling partially the Shimanami Kaido, there is a tourist info center close by where u can also book your bike in advance. The village is charming and sleeping at yubune gives you the opportunity to experience the slow life on the island. Many tiny hidden bars with karaoke where you can have fun with locals.

SOIL Setoda, hotel in Onomichi

SOIL Setoda features a garden, terrace, a restaurant and bar in Onomichi. Located around 28 km from Saikon-ji Temple, the hotel with free WiFi is also 31 km away from Saikokuji Temple.

When cycling I came across this hotel and made a spontaneous reservation for the next night. It was incredible to arrive after a day of cycling, leave my things in the beautiful and thoughtfully designed room, have a shower, go to the onsen next to it, and be on the rooftop just when the sun was going down; before ending the day with a special dinner in the same building. In the morning before taking the ferry back to the mainland I had a traditional Japanese breakfast with a nice coffee. The staff was incredibly warm and welcoming. I highly recommend stopping here when cycling and staying for a night or two!

My favourite place is the observation deck on the top of the mountain, which has a great view. You can take beautiful pictures of this city. For food, Onomichi Ramen is fatty for me, but there are other restaurants in city which have their own specialties. A city walk is recommended, since there are a lot of temples on the mountain, and you need to get there on foot, and explore their beauty. I will prepare a better shoes for the next trip and bring less item with me next time, because the tour on in the city requires a lot of physical strength.

For many Onomichi is the start of the Shimanami Kaido cycle route, but Onomichi has enough attractions that it is worth staying at least one day to look around. The Temple Walk is worth viewing the 25 temples along the route and the view from the top is great, and Cat Alley is great fun. A walk along the pier and having a snack or meal at one of the restaurants there is pleasant.

Onomichi is a nice seaside, port town and has a good vibe. Its the start, or end, of the Shimanami Kaido and attracts many people keen to do this cycling route. The town has a nice atmosphere as the people are friendly, helpful and accommodating. If I was keen I'd stay an extra day amd do the temple walking route as it seemed nice and went into the hills above town. Local ramen was demand served by super friendly hosts in the restaurants.

If you want to cycle the Shimanami Kaidou, be s7re to arrive early in Onomichi, since you are able to visit the main attractions, being Senkou-ji and the old temple course, in a few hours. After this you should be able to start cycling the Shimanami Kaidou.

Just loved this place for the incredible location, the passion and vision of the renovation and the high quality work that has gone into the restoration and the willingness to share it with visitors and guests. We also loved Onomichi itself, a wonderful surprise - what an interesting prot town with so much to do and see, and lovely restaurants very accessible. We loved that the owner spent time chatting to us, giving recommendations for dinner, and sharing his personal journey and story about the renovation, it made it really memorable.

Beautiful architecture in a fabulous location. Was the perfect place to stop over when doing the shimanami-Kaido (from the north, starting in Onomichi). The restaurant was also really cool. Huge 10/10 to all the staff - I speak Japanese but none of my family do, and honestly wasn’t expecting everyone to have such amazing English this far off the main tourist circuit here in Japan. Lots of really friendly little interactions!

Beautiful view of the Onomichi harbor and you can watch sunrise from the main bedroom. It is also a charming traditional Japanese house that has been repurposed as a guest house with a lovely simple garden, reuse of traditional tiles and you can enjoy seeing the beautiful original beams in the ceiling. It was also very comfortable temperature and the chairs and beds and towels and plates, cups, bowls all great quality.

The building has been beautifully restored. The details were exceptional. Lots of thoughtful touches for guests and the host has left details on how to discover Onomichi as well as local artists, eating places and crafts people. This is a must for lovers of cinema as the property has a history with filmmakers. Staying here was the highlight of our journey through Japan!

Hotel Cycle is very stylish. The rooms are naturally dark but well lit and the design is tasteful. As we were about to cycle three days on Shimanami Kaido we loved the cycle theme of the hotel and it’s near the rental places. The restaurant for dinner was excellent and the breakfast really varied and healthy. There are also lovely produce and gift shops in the building.

Hotel was close to the train station and a nice restaurant (arrived late and restaurant was still open--yeah!). We had a little confusion in finding the check-in counter because it was on the second floor, but a minor issue. Hotel is right next door to the place where we picked up our bikes to start our ride of the Shimanami Kaido.

Great location next to bike rental and start of the shimanami kaido. The breakfast was the best we’ve had at any hotel in our 3 week trip. It was the closest thing to an actual “western” breakfast, which is nice after eating some of the more eclectic “western” options. Very friendly staff. The bathrooms were very nice and large.
