Lovely room with view out over gardens and pond, and what was probably beautiful scenery which due to the weather we could not see. The included continental style breakfast was very nice. The young German lady Fransisca who appeared to do everything at the hotel was really lovely, helpful and friendly, a great front of house asset.
Featuring views of the surrounding mountains, Alpine Glacier Motel offers spacious units with smart tv, modern bathrooms, and heating.

Franz Josef is a must do destination when travelling in the South Island, especially if you like the outdoors. Got up early and travelled to Lake Matheson to watch the sunrise - possibly the best experience in all our years of travelling. The cafe at Lake Matheson was brilliant as well and Alice May restaurant in Franz Josef was brilliant for dinner.

A must see on any New Zealand itinerary, but one day is sufficient. Perfect for adventurous young people who like walking, not so much for older persons. The helicopter ride was bit of a rip-off as the weather closed in and we could not land on the glacier. Although they did give us a little refund, it was not up to our expectations and very expensive 20 minute ride.

Beautiful World Heritage site with exquisite natural flora...
Beautiful World Heritage site with exquisite natural flora and fauna. The walks were amongst the most scenic and beautiful we’ve ever experienced. Only downside, which I feel needs to be more clearly explained to visitors, is that the glaciers themselves can only be seen and viewed from the lookout points if it is a clear day without low hanging cloud. We were disappointed to not actually see the Franz Josef Glacier nor the Fox Glacier from the fartherest reach of the walks. Environmentally, we were not prepared to fly/chopper to see the glaciers from the air. Nevertheless, the walks themselves are a must do, driving through the region is gob-smackingly beautiful and the walk around Lake Matheson a must see.

Our helihike was cancelled due to weather, so we did a quad bike in the rain. IT WAS AWESOME! We smiled for the entire two hours.
There is a sweet chapel for quiet and reflection.
We never saw the glaciers as it rained for three days straight which was so sad.
The grocery and a few restaurants were enough to find something to eat.

We were unlucky with the weather, as there was low cloud and some rain. We took a couple of walks to see the glacier from viewing points which were really good. Paths were very good, not muddy, and there were signs to explain the ecology and history.

A small town with a couple of shops and plenty pubs/restaurants. The glacier is 7kms from the town - drive to the car park and then there’s a short walk to the viewing area - you’ll need binoculars or a long lens to truly appreciate the beauty of the glacier. Fox Glacier is 30 mins away and again there’s a pretty uphill walk to a viewing area. You can get a helicopter onto the glacier but they are $$$.
Lake Mathewson is worth visiting while in Fox, park at the car park and walk 30/40 mins to the jetty. Beautiful especially at sunset but use bug spray as there are lots of midgies!
Lovely spacious rooms with on suite bathroom. The rooms are exceptionally clean and kept that way throughout our four day stay. We had ample coffee and tea making facilities and even enjoyed a complimentary chocolate treat. The hotel meals had a wide selection which meant my gluten intolerant partner had a good choice of options. The location is a short walk to the high street and walks out from Franz Josef so ideal. All staff were very nice and certainly went out of their way to ensure we’re were happy.
The staff at Rainforest Retreat go above and beyond to make sure you have a comfy stay. We really appreciated the top-notch facilities and the beautiful setting, nestled in the forest and a very short walk into the township. We stayed in one of the Gecko Cottages and had dinner one night at the on-site restaurant, Monsoon, which is great value value for money and also beautifully decorated! Would stay again :-)
Wonderful location in Franz Josef, walking distance to everything in the little town as well as a few nice hikes. The house was very nicely setup and very clean. Also very cozy, we felt right at home. I highly recommend this place, especially for families since it has 3 bedrooms, washer and dryer, and a dishwasher!
The studio had everything you needed and was very decently sized. Great bed and the bubble bath was a very nice added bonus! Located right in Franz Josef village. We did a glacier hike and just had to cross the street to the Franz Josef Glacier Guides building which was very convenient.
Loved the rainforest retreat deluxe, I wish we could stay a bit longer. We checked in a lil late but Mel at reception was so helpful and gave us directions to the sauna and spa. Such a nice room with everything you need. Will definitely stay here again
Lodge was amazing and semi-private. I think I had the least private of the villas but someone had to have it. I also liked that the hotel catered to all sorts of budgets. Location was great and walking distance to everything in town.
Location was great. Some cabins have view of the glacier. Cabins are quite nice and have a nice feel. The owners are nice. The property is well maintained and gardens / lawns look great. Liked the self check in. Great value for money.
Super friendly Staff
Warm soup, breakfast and popcorn just make this place unique
Whirl Pool. We didn't use it but it looked like fun!
Great location for Franz Josef Glacier, Kiwi Wildlife Park,...
Thank you so much!
Clean hostel, comfy beds, good size rooms. Great location just a 30 min drive to fox glacier/ lake matheson and not far from Franz jospeh glacier.
Nice lounge area with a pool table and a TV room.
Good location. right in the centre of Franz Josef near other bars and restaurants. so very easy walking distance to everything. clean. room had views of the mountains which was nice
We were a family of 4. Kids have their separate beds and the room has a great view of the glacier. The kitchenette was well equipped and the jacuzzi was a cherry on top
Enjoyed the fire and private outdoor setting.
Great tv coverage for sport if you have the time, but really there is too much to see in and around Franz Josef
Nice stand alone cabin right outside Franz Josef. Could hear a little road noise off the highway but that died down before we went to bed so was not an issue.
