The property grounds were amazing with full of orange and olive trees. From the property, we took the old Roman stone trail leading to the medieval town.
Ingrid, the housekeeper, not only provided us with GF bread, but baked us a delicious GF cake with the oranges from the garden. Her husband beautifully maintains the garden with nice decorative touches. They were both very welcoming and accommodating.

Monsanto has been the highlight of our trip to Portugal and Spain so far.
It is so authentic and real, the buildings are amazing and the views are outstanding.
The walk up to the Castle is a little challenging but so worth the effort.
We were there for the medieval festival and were made very welcome by the locals and we had some memorable times there.
If you are in the Douro Valley, make the effort to head to Monsanto if you want to visit an authentic and historic village.

Monsanto is the most unique small town we visited on our 3wk trip to Portugal. You can start to see the massive boulders from the base of the hillside and then it's 5 km straight up winding narrow road. You will need your host to show you where to park.

It is a good idea to book a place for the night.
It is a good idea to book a place for the night. The views are so incredible and unique you will want to experience day and night in amongst the boulders. There is a wonderful hike to the ruins above the boulder village. There is spectacular lighting in the evening. The village is quite out of the way for travelling. This was our second visit to Monsanto so we knew to book for the night. Lots of unique places to eat. We ate at our hosts' spot and it was great. Once you arrive amongst the boulders, you don't have to leave until your stay is over. You can find all you need there.

It's a very peaceful place with lots of great views and we found a lovely bistro to eat at. Some of the roads are very steep and you have to park and walk so for someone not so good on their feet this wouldn't be suitable

Breakfast was very, very good.
Breakfast was very, very good. Plentiful and the 1 st place that had scrambled eggs. The setting , room with very nice, and w/ stated excellence and environment. Elegantly decorated. Plenty of cold cuts and cheese. In any event, a morning feast for the eyes and stomach.
This was a true find. Although at the foot of the hill from Monsanto, there was a pathway (the old Roman Road) to walk through cork trees up to town. Restaurant choices were limited in town, so we brought charcuterie with us. The proprietor supplied plates, cutting board, wine glasses and we had a lovely dinner and sunset on the terrace with the dogs and cats living on the terrace. We had a wonderful breakfast of fruits from the property eith breads and homemade jam. Yum. We felt at home and well taken care of.
We loved staying in the stairway to the castle in the unique village of Monsanto. We enjoyed being able to quietly explore the narrow streets and the castle next to us. the town at night is magical . The house is beautifully decorated and clean and comfortable. The host Simon was very responsive and you felt welcome and supported if needed. Would definitely recommend we discovered there is more to this area than expected.
Everything was fabulous!! Monsanto is so quaint and unique... a must experience once in a lifetime. Elena was so kind and helpful... in every way! She muscled our luggage almost single-handedly to help get it from our car to the house... unbelievable! I cannot possibly endorse this lodging choice any higher - no words descriptive enough to endorse a stay here at the Sunset House!!! So remarkable!!
An absolute pleasure to stay here with super kind and relaxed hosts. Monsanto was our favourite town in Portugal and our wonderful and thoughtfully designed accommodation and kind hosts added enormously to our experience. The charming terrace was a wonderful place for breakfast or a drink. The sister restaurant also had a glorious terrace and excellent food. Highly recommended! Can't wait to return!
Location is exceptional! We just had the best time and the house was way better than what we were expecting. The fireplace also warms up the main bedroom and the 1st floor hallway. Everything was perfectly clean. It has 2 different patios which provide spectacular views right from the top of the old village. Very central and close to the 3 little spots to eat in Monsanto! Highly recommend.
WOW! What an excellent property, with a spectacular view, in a remarkable village, an excellent breakfast, and, and a wonderful host. We drove here and parking was safe, free, and readily available. We will definitely return and recommend staying here to our friends and family. Perfect experience. Staying at Casa do Castello, in Monsanto, is something you shouldn't miss.
Everything about our stay was great! The location of the hotel is just right as there are quite a few free parking spots around the area and at walkable distance from all the points of interest/restaurants/cafes/etc. Jorge and Ana Paula are super friendly and helpful with any inquiries we might had. Breakfast is decent and diverse.
What an amazing accommodation! Fully updated but built in the 15th Century! One of the Monsanto boulders is even built into the bedroom! Watching the sunset from the front porch was amazing! Eloíza and Fernando were such amazing hosts! A wonderful and memorable stay!
Nestled amidst the mountains, this hotel is a serene gem where the quiet is profound. The welcoming ambiance shines through, from the comfort of the rooms to the delightful breakfast featuring local and homemade offerings.
Our third location in Portugal and so far the best. We like to sleep under covers in a cool room and room temp was easy to control. Comfortable bed. Strong water pressure and instantly hot in shower. No complaints.
Eloiza Helena was a fantastic host. Monsanto is a beautiful town and Old House provided a very restful and comfortable stay. the assistance provided with parking, baggage and everything else was greatly appreciated.
It was an amazing stay. I would love to go back and stay longer. Monsanto is a magical place and our host, even though we did not speak Portuguese, was helpful and did everything to make our stay comfortable.
