We took the "slow ferry", no car. We booked a van tour with Gail's Tours for the first afternoon. She hit the highlights of her island, providing an entertaining narrative of the island's history and inhabitants. We found plenty of things to do and see within walking distance of our hotel. The Whaling Museum was a recommended stop that I'm glad we saw. Just walking through the village was wonderful. So much history! One day we took the bus to Sconset, did the Bluff Walk, and took a walking tour with Rick through the village of historic homes. If we were here longer than our 3 days we would have liked to explore more of the island outside the main town. It was recommended to get dinner reservations, which we neglected to do. So, after the first day, we booked dinners for the rest of the trip. We ate at the Tap Room (sea bass was excellent!), the Sea Grille (blackened tuna was terrific) and Brotherhood of Thieves (clam chowder--best we've had!) We traveled in the shoulder season and avoided the crowds, but missed out on the places that weren't open yet. We traveled pre-Memorial Day, the weather was on the cool and windy side, so we never got to the beaches. Next time!
This was our first trip to Nantucket (even though I'm from New England!). We explored the island by bike. There are dedicated bike paths but not everywhere so you do end up riding on the tar road. Island traffic seems to be used to bikers, though; they even stop for you when they don't have to according to traffic laws: better safe than sorry but a bit annoying for experienced street bikers (we live in the Netherlands). Beware of biking routes (via Google) that send you via Main Street — this is full of old-fashioned cobblestones that cannot be ridden with a bike! Being an island, many restaurants are quite expensive, but not all of them are worth the money. We particularly enjoyed the Nantucket Tap Room and Ventuno. or, The Whale is popular but the tin ceiling plus music plus limited menu with no subs is frustrating... and breakfast places that offer 'standard' fare are hard to find. There's a surprisingly large Stop 'n Shop in the harbor as well as on the other side of town. We stayed Mon-Fri, which was enough time to see the entire island by bike. We biked to the Cisco Brewery but the tour is $20pp so that explains why some bikers have to be picked up instead of biking back to the harbor!
Nantucket is a great place to spend a day or a week. There are many great places to dine or have a drink. We didn't go to the beach this time but we have in the past and they're beautiful. If you're on a tight budget you may want to find another option or just go for the day.
A very special island off the coast of New England. More than 60% is land trust and the rest is super expensive beautiful 19th century homes. There is plenty to do such as swimming, surfing, hiking, and biking. The shoulder season i.e. May, June, September, and October is magnificent and a good value. There are nice B&Bs in historic houses as well as hotels. There is a nice variety of excellent restaurants. A good candidate for your bucket list.
We walked a LOT around town and the historical homes of Nantucket, which was good for us. Anyone with instability or bad joints would not enjoy the walking. We didn't have time to see more of the island and didn't know exactly where to go or how to get there. It was COOL and windy in late April. We liked our cottage at the boat basin.
Definitely recommend Gail’s Tour, wonderful way to see the island and learn it’s history. Whale museum is a must, attend the presentations. Best restaurant for us was the DUNE. Born & Bread for Breakfast. So many eateries to choose from. We went in early May and no crowds. Best Lodging EVER, REGATTA INN
