Fly to Tirana International Airport, then drive 230km south to Gjirokastër (approx. 4 hours). Alternatively, from within Albania, take a direct bus from Tirana (4-5 hours). No direct water transport available. Transfers may be required for international travellers.
The most convenient airport for Gjirokastër is Tirana International Airport, due to its frequent domestic and international flights. It's approximately 230km away, a manageable journey for travellers.
Gjirokastër, Albania, lacks a public transport system. However, the city is compact and walkable, with most attractions within a 2km radius. Taxis are readily available and affordable for longer distances. Cycling is not recommended due to the city's hilly terrain. Driving is possible, but be aware of narrow, winding roads.
The Old Town of Gjirokastër, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the best area to stay. It offers easy access to historic attractions like Gjirokastër Castle and Skenduli House, and a variety of local restaurants and shops.

The town is beautiful and interesting for its fortified houses. Also is on UNESCO list. The old centre is very pleasant to walk around, it has an atmosphere. Car traffic was quite problematic, the roads between the houses are very narrow and very steep. Also, Google maps did not have good enough background and often led us somewhere where, for example, instead of a road was staircase. The old stone roads were very slippery in the rain ;-) Ono or two night is enought to stay here.

Albanian thoughts:
Albanian thoughts:
Spent a week here in April 2024 – so many positives …
Purely electronic passport gates at Tirana airport – an advantage if low on passport stamp space? Swift bus into town centre. Euros very widely accepted, 1:1 with the local Lek currency. Felt safe, met many great people and enjoyed a lot of raki; wine rather so-so, beer better … Trains are close to non-existent; negotiating the minibus service involves arriving and paying on the spot – found it straightforward; typical price: Tirana to Gjirokastra – 4 hours - £10 ..; saw stunning mountain scenery in last 2 hours, and when crossing the mountains from this town to Sarande port (1hr15, £3.30). Accommodation costs very favourable: enjoyed flats at £9 pppn. From Sarande, easy enough to catch a ferry or hydrofoil to Corfu, as a return airport – ca/ £20 single, 30-60 mins. Albaniatourguide proved a very useful online resource. Looking forward to next trip: apparently 12 degrees even in January …

Only had time to visit the castle. Spent several hours there. Would love to come back for the folk arts festival and visit some of the houses with the specific architecture that put this place on the UNESCO list.

The city is pretty but unfortunately the vast majority of it...
The city is pretty but unfortunately the vast majority of it is rundown with only the bazaar and some houses being maintained to a level fit for a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and once you go away from the bazaar especially at night it feels really lonely and sad. Gjirokaster has become very touristic in the past few years with the old bazaar being constantly crowded with youths from Western European countries who do not respect the place and openly smoke hashish and get drunk.
The road to get to the old town is a traditional stone path that while beautiful is a disaster because it destroys your car's suspension, has very steep grades and if another car comes from the other direction good luck! Because of this and the lack of parking in the old town (even among hotels that advertise having parking) you become a prisoner of the old town. During the summer because of the type of stone the city is built of (also found in the mountain Gjirokaster is built on) it is very hot even during the night making the entire experience very unpleasant.
Most museums/attractions are basic and the few English descriptions that can be found are very nationally charged which reminds me more of the rhetoric of the 1940s than 2023. The vast majority of Albanians, even those who work in this "tourism industry" cannot speak English at all or speak it very badly making communication difficult and moreover they are not really friendly with tourists.
Gjirokaster like Albania in general is about as expensive as Greece or even Italy while effectively offering a touristic product akin to a 3rd world country. Unless corruption is rooted out, Albanians stop emigrating and the economy and democratic institutions develop I frankly do not think I will ever visit Gjirokaster again.
This hotel reflects the style of Gjirokastra. The decoration was very vintage: Rug, curtain, window, blinds, furnitures, laces... We loved it!
The hotel is two minutes to Old Town Bazaar and has great location.
The room was VERY clean. The breakfast from Albanian cuisine was tasty which also resembles Turkish cuisine. We had the breakfast at the terrace. It was peaceful.
The host was very kind and lovely.
If you want to experience the life in old times, you can visit Old Town Hotel.
Love from Turkey,
Tuğçe and Sabri.
The hotel is in the city centre hosted in a beautiful historical building; we stayed in the suite, the former living room used for ceremony and daily life by the family’s members. The breakfast is really a beautiful moment, served in the terrace of the house by the super kind staff of the hotel. The atmosphere of Old Bazaar hotel is unique, very recommended to live the original vibes of Gjirokaster old city, a beautiful experience that we loved a lot. Thank you for your kindness, we will never forget it!
The Hotel is perfectly situated in the heart of Gjirokaster. The historic city center is only a few steps away. The location of the hotel is simply stunning and allows an excellent view over Gjirokaster. The hotel-staff is extremely friendly and helped me even with a little problem with my car. Breakfast was excellent and was much more than a single person could eat. This was the best hotel I had during my week touring around Albania! Highly recommended!
A beautiful hotel! We stayed in the suite which was light and airy and an amazing view over Gjirokastër. The bed was really comfy (medium-hard) with lovely pillows. The service from Tatianna was amazing. We followed Google maps to get there (DO NOT DO THIS!) and when we got stuck in the cobbled streets in our car, she came out and helped us to get there. Breakfast was delicious. Really well located and near lots of popular places. 10/10 would recommend
Very clean and nice family run hotel. The owner, Maradonna will literally do anything for you; he picked us up from the bus station, drove us anywhere in Gjirokäster we liked, gave us information and got us back to the busstation all for FREE. You just give him a call and he’ll be there, truely an amazing experience and I have the utmost respect for the hard work he and his family put in, make sure to give them a generous tip if you stay here.
- great place, they converted a historic house into an hotel. Our room was comfortable, spacious and just gorgeous. We had a free upgrade and had a room with a beautiful fireplace.
- breakfast was good and the courtyard where we ate it was even better
- the hosts were super nice and made sure that everything was fine during the stay
- the location is super nice, about 5 minutes by walk to the old bazaar.
I had the delightful experience of enjoying a weekend getaway at Hotel Sarajet 1821. Its traditional décor offered a genuine sense of the city's warmth and character. The room was small but sufficient, it provided all the essentials, and it had a wonderful view of the city of Gjirokastër. The host was very kind and helpfull. P.S. Don't miss out their special breakfast
Everything was good. A great place to stay, not far from the sights of Gjirokaster. A comfortable, quiet room. Lovely and responsive staff. Kind and friendly people. A very nice breakfast. Good wifi. Parking is available right on front of the hotel. It was everything we could have wanted.
Great value for money. Highest recommendations.
Small and cozy hotel, excellent location and wonderful family making us feel like we were dear relatives visiting. The location is really perfect for seeing old Gjirokastër, the castle, museums, the bazaar and restaurants. The rooms were beautiful with very nice traditional furniture, feeling like someones house.
This guesthouse is conveniently situated on one of the cobbled streets that lead you straight to the old city center of Gjirokaster. The room is spacious, has a fridge and air conditioning, which is nice to have in Albanian summer. The host was very approachable in spite of the language barrier.
Excellent place, amazing location. The hotel has a mix of decorations of traditional and modern. I would recommend this place to anyone who is visiting Gjirokaster. The owner and the staff were amazing, very helpful, and welcoming. The food was delicious and fresh. So, defently 10 out of 10
The hotel is in the main street of gjirokaster where bars and restaurants are around, and has free parking just opposite. Walking in the old town is not far. The bed was very comfortable and the room very clean and the stuff very friendly. I'd come again
Beautiful view from the hotel with a comfortable and quiet room. I loved the hard wood furniture and decor and the overall warm and unique ambiance that captured the vibe of Gjirokaster as a whole. Perfect location right by the Bazaar
Gorgeous hotel with a spectacular view, having breakfast on the terrace was really special. Room was very cool and in the style of Gjirokaster. Location is good very close to the castle and not too far to walk from town
The hotel is located in a charming old building. The service was outstanding and everyone was really trying to make our stay memorable. We truly enjoyed it. Breakfast was amazing, I highly recommend it.
Great family-run hotel with incredible views from the bedroom window and set really close to Gjirokaster castle. Newly refurbished building, very clean and there was always someone around to help you.
Beautiful hotel right on top of a hill in Gjirokaster, as such the views are absolutely amazing. Room was very clean and spacious and the restaurant was amazing, really wonderful breakfast and food.
Lovely guest house on the top of the mountain overlooking Gjirokaster. Very nice and helpful owner, cooked us tasty Albanian dinner. Very good value for money. 10 out of 10. Definitely recommend.
