I'd been to Castro several times, but this was my first during high season, and I'd advise travelers that unless you like sitting in backed-up traffic ('taco') for long stretches, just avoid Castro from mid-January to late February, when trying to drive from anywhere north of Castro to anywhere south of Castro can take hours. November-December are great, however, and I'm told March is the best month of all. By and large, Chiloé's charms are not to be found in the cities.

Castro is a really charming and very laid back place despite being the largest town on the island of Chiloe. It's a wonderful place to chill out, and there is some beautiful countryside in the vicinity. Next time when I go back, I'd like to rent a bike and explore the countryside more leisurely (this time I had a car).

I had long heard of how lovely Chiloe is and now I know why!
I had long heard of how lovely Chiloe is and now I know why! Castro was charming, a nice mix of history and local culture. The municipal museum was informative, the UNESCO heritage churches were really interesting, the palafitos--houses on stilts along the waterfront--were very colorful. The weather can be quite variable--I had two sunny, nice days and three rainy cold ones--so travelers need to bring a variety of clothing choices. Well worth a visit!

The famous church is way better looking on the inside.
The famous church is way better looking on the inside. Not much going on in the town itself, but a pleasant stop on the way, or base for other day trips. Highly recommend Nórdica Cafe for empanadas and sandwiches!
I have been a platinum member with Marriott for 7 years and a diamond member with Hilton for 6 years. I have never ever stayed in a better property anywhere in the world. Extremely good taste in architectural and interior design. You cannot possibly beat the location on a sunny Chiloe day. Fantastic service and dining experience. I regret not having stayed longer, but that's a good reason to return. This is absolutely a property with real luxury-level caliber and worths every penny.
Beautiful spot, very quiet with beautiful view over the surrounding area. Comfortable cottage with enough space for 2. Good and fast communication with the owner via what's app, who gave a lot of information for the island. Owner met us at the highway, to show the way to the bungalow, which is a bit difficult to find if you don't know the way.
Great little hostel, with nice common area. Friendly staff and volunteers, and as the dorm I booked was taken, they gave me a private room, so very happy with this (most places would just decline your stay or ask you to pay a higher price). Location good and fairly central, just a moments walk from the coast and the Castro church
The location was excellent, nice ,cozy hotel, tastefully decorated.
What I really want to recommend is Helena the receptionist. She was very very nice.
After we checked out, they found documents in our room. Since we left Castro at the time, I asked her to photocopy them (quite a lot) and she did it and I thank her for that😊
Our host Andres was friendly and eager to share his vast knowledge of Chiloé. Every place he recommended was as he predicted it — like having a personal travel planner! I cannot thank him enough. … The cabin is in a lovely setting on the water’s edge, far enough off the highway out of town to provide a restful sleep.

It's a big old hotel: probably the first one of it's class in the city. The location is just great. It has wifi, sauna, indoor pool (all free), great breakfast, and great staff. They change our room so we could get a better view of the sea, they helped us with our bags and they were very attentive to any request.
1. Beautiful interior and design of the hotel, the atmosphere was very calming.
2. Kind staff, the receptionist kindly helped us when we had a problem with hot water.
3. Tasty breakfast. The breakfast room had a nice atmosphere and the ladies there welcomed us warmly and took care of us perfectly.
this is a great little hotel to really experience Castro. it is located right on the water and you can sit in the common area or on one of the decks and watch the boats the birds and the fishers. The hosts are friendly and helpful with recommendations for restaurants and sites. Breakfast is good.
The Hotel is situated in a traditional „Palafito“ directly on the water and offers amazing views from the common area. It is beautifully designed, super clean and modern. The service was personal and extremely kind. Amazing breakfast as well!
The view was exceptional. The apartment was very comfy, well equipped and properly heated when necessary. Regarding location, it was somewhat close to downtown Castro and with an easy access to the main road to the South of the Island.
It is the nicest cabana we have stayed in Chiloe! There is a wonderful view. You can walk down to the water. The cabana is comfortable. We love seeing the rising sun and rising moon that reflects off the water.
This is such a beautiful place located in the most exquisite zone of Chiloé. The staff were all so very friendly and eager to share their best insider’s information on places to visit and to eat.
A one of a kind hotel in a great location! loved this place! Funky architecture, a patio deck to enjoy the sunrise, great sea views, the lovely art. Could not have been better!
