We visited this unique place because my second great...
We visited this unique place because my second great grandmother was born there before she emigrated to California in the 1850s. It was a town built in the early 1600s by the Danish King Christian IV and initially intended to be a fortified town. Our main interests are history and birdwatching so this place is ideal for that. We did some great birding in the Elbe marshes (near Haseldorf and Wedel). It’s a nice to walk and look at the shops, bookstore and museum. A small but historical town.
A small but historical town. Well supplied with restaurants for its size. Most restaurants are around the main square. We ate at Rathauskeller and Kleine Heinrich and can recommend both of them. We visited the Detlefsen musum which was OK. Be aware that the modern arts museum is only open Friday to Sunday. Take a walk (or run) along the Elbe. Take a round trip with the ferry to Wischhafen (no reason to go ashore there, unless you have a bicycle or a car) or rent bicycles at the tourist information.BoDenmark

We first got a room in the back looking at a exhaust fan, but managed to get a room in the front with a view to the town square. The bed was very comfortable with nice linens. The bathroom has been renovated. The parking is right behind the hotel. You choose your breakfast the day before and it was very good. The staff are very friendly.KarenPortugal
