Every part of this town we drove through was filthy and trash was everywhere. Much worse than what is normal for the area/country. We were warned by our host not to go out after 10pm. I am 6 ft 190lbs., my buddy is 6ft.3" and we were both uncomfortable walking to a restaurant during the evening, before the sun even set. For reference, I have been to about 50 countries all over the world and have rarely felt unsafe like this or seen such a filthy city with trash piled all over the sidewalks, everywhere. Disgusting. I will not go anywhere near this city again.

Machala itself is very clean and We felt safe in general.

Machala itself is very clean and We felt safe in general. The cables on the street posts damage the scenery a bit and road maintenance is going on everywhere. Right outside of Machala there’s a lot garbage and hungry homeless dogs in the street opening up those bags. Isla Jambeli can also use some cleaning but it was a nice experience overall. The water was lukewarm so it was perfect to bathe in.

We went to Machala to make our immigration application.

We went to Machala to make our immigration application. It is just a rather drab port city, not too much tourism related things. Architecture not particularly stunning etc. But took a cab to Pepe's on the Malecon and it completely changed our view of the place. If you go to Machala you must have lunch there great shrimp and deck view. I should mention that as we have found everywhere in Ecuador, people there were very nice and accommodating.

Machala simply is not a tourist town.

Machala simply is not a tourist town. It supports the agriculture and shrimp farming around it. There are a couple of good restaurants, and we certainly enjoy the Carl’s Jr. at the mall. The seafood restaurants on the malecón are just average food with tourist prices. The deli/cafe at the Oro Verde hotel is 5 star quality and priced accordingly. The Hillary deli is also not to be missed. We also thoroughly enjoy the Colombian bakery in the downtown area. And the open air markets are an interesting spectacle. But 90% of the foreigners who go there go for visa processing.
