FAQs about hotels in Merida

Small City with Impressive Roman Past

Mérida was founded as Augusta Emerita in 25 BC, the capital of the ancient Roman province of Lusitania. Located almost half-way between Madrid and Lisbon, it is nowadays an important historic centre, and the capital of the Spanish region of Extremadura. The ‘Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The city was founded in order to protect the Guadiana River pass, becoming the largest city on the Iberian Peninsula. Visigoths, Moors, the Christian ‘reconquista’, and the Napoleonic invasion left their mark too, and the city is nowadays home to the most complete Roman remains in Spain.

Its historic centre displays a mix of all these cultures, with the Roman Theatre and the Roman Bridge standing out. The Alcazaba is the old fortress of Roman origin, successively rebuilt by Visigoths and Moors. Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque buildings, as well as typical cobbled streets complete the picture. Some of the most charming hotels and B&Bs in Mérida are located in the Old Town.

The easiest way to get to the city is flying in to Seville or Madrid, and then by train to the local railway station. Whether you’re searching the best hotels or budget accommodation, don’t miss the Mérida deals available on Booking.com!

Merida has so many great archeological and cultural sites to explore. Thanfully they are all packed within walkable distances. A day would not be enough unless you have the stamina. But it can be done.

Loved the Roman Theatre and the Amphitheatre.

Loved the Roman Theatre and the Amphitheatre. We also went on a trolley ride through the town which was fun and gave us a good view of the Roman Bridge and Aqueduct. Our hotel was not far from the Temple of Diana which was passed on the way to a really lively town square. Generally the atmosphere in Mérida was lively and fun. Loved it.

I'm a big fan of Roman history, and Mérida was the obvious place to stop over on my trip down to Andalucia from the UK. Temple of Diana and the aqueduct are both stunning, but sadly the amphitheatre wasn't open to visitors when I was there. A good excuse to return!

I loved the area near the Roman sites.

I loved the area near the Roman sites. The restaurants and shops were wonderful, and the area we stayed in near them seemed very safe. We spent about 3.5 hours at the Roman sites and history museum, but we could have used another 3 hours to explore the site in order to read the informational plaques at a leisurely pace and to people watch. We ate at La Casona, and the food was amazing, especially for the very reasonable prices. The portions are BIG, by the way. Don't miss out on trying the grilled goat cheese salad.

Merida is “advanced” Spain, not that many foreigners get there, to the region of Extremadura. But it repays the effort for those that want to see vast amounts of Roman remains, in various states of repair. Everyone will want to see the aquaduct, Trajan’s Arch and the museum. But there is much more dotted all over the place. Easy to get around from a central location, most sites within walking range. Plenty of decent eateries if you think Spanish. Tourist food if you must. Careful what time of year you go, the climate is extreme.

The room was spacious, clean and functional, but a bit dark towards an inner courtyard which on the other hand made it quiet during the night. The strict rules of the restaurant and bar (that did not have the cocktails they offer in their menu) rather reminded us more of a youth hostel then a hotel of this category, unfortunately due to a family emergency we could not check wether it was thus in all paradores or just the one in Merida. The parador is right in the city with all sights in easy walking distance

My room was really clean and even though I only stayed one night it had all the necessities like pots, silverware and even a coffee machine to stay for an indefinite time. The location was also great as it was very close to the museum (must see). With all the pluses of the room the service was even better. Noelia approved my request to check in early (4 hours)! So I can get situated and see Mérida and she made sure I understood how to enter and leave the building!

This is the best apartment we have stayed at in Spain, and we have done much travelling in Spain. The apartment is modern, new, and has all the amenities expected. It was fully equipped with utensils and kitchenware for those who prefer to prepare food in. Awesome! The location is excellent, well within walking distance of the center and the Roman ruins. Parking is not far and easily accessible.

The family and I were driving through Spain to meet a ferry at Santander. The hotel provided just what we needed, a good, clean room, restaurant on-site and safe parking. It's next to a large supermarket in a modern area of Merida. Great for us, but probably less convenient if you want to explore the centre.

The hotel is beautiful and well located in a quiet, pedestrian-friendly square in the center of Mérida.. The architecture, the decore that highlights the "Roman" history of Mérida, the cleanliness, the spaciousness are all pluses. The Plaza de España was especially pretty at Christmas.
