FAQs about hotels in Marseille

A City Built from the Sea

Founded by the Phocaeans in 600 B.C., the long history of Marseille has produced an interesting and dynamic port-side city bursting with cultural diversity. Watch the fishermen sell their catch by auction at Vieux Harbour or cruise along the Corniche roads with views of the Calanques, dramatic rocky inlets to the sea.

The le Cours Julien and la Plaine areas provide a trendy hangout and every Thursday and Saturday morning the Plaine market offers its various wares. This is the area to buy a novel from a hip bookshop or watch your kids in one of the playgrounds. There are also plentiful cafes to sip a cappuccino and watch the world go by.

If a culture packed vacation is on the agenda, the Musée d'Archéologie Méditerranéenne, Notre Dame de la Garde and Palais Longchamp won’t disappoint. The unique Unité d'Habitation, designed by famous architect Le Corbusier, contains everything from a shopping street to housing and has spectacular views of the terracotta landscape that makes Marseille so distinctive.

Marseille is a short trip from Marseille Provence Airport, so your holiday can start promptly. With over 100 hotels and apartments available, Booking.com is the perfect place find the great accommodation and start your journey in the largest city on the Côte d'Azur.

Good and interesting place. Went down-hill over the decades.

Good and interesting place. Went down-hill over the decades. Visited with kids, good and friendly Arab community in the streets, keeping up the small business and the city alive. Teargas shot every 10 min while we were cris crossing the downtown area. Business goes on and continues, while street battles are fought. Train station full of junkies. Good place for kids to learn about the real world. Maybe too real. Restaurants are no longer affordable if you don't drive a Lamborghini. Forget getting any good food if you have no reservation. La Boheme is gone.

From the airport you can take the shuttle bus to train station in Marseille, train station is a little far to reach from airport, so shuttle is the good option ,cheap and fast. From the train station is metro (two lines) and busses to reach every corner of the city. Is a must to be on the old docks, there are restaurants with good prices city tour bus with hop on-off option(keep the recipe !),cruise ferries or long distance ferries to reach Algerie, Maroc and other destinations ,saturday and sunday are market there and sometimes some entertainers to make some money and to give some extra memories to tourists. There are some interesting museums that are worth to try(go also at the Cosquer Méditerranée,is not cheap but it worth it!!!) and in the first sunday of the month on most of it is free entrance. Also is good to visit the cathedrals, specially the Bazilica Notre-Dame de la Garde, reach by the tourist bus other is a lot to climb,is almost perfect for a top view of the city and mountains.Old streets are narrow so let the car at home, from the first day you will know why..and for the beaches fans, they have some beaches but sorry, is not the perfect place to search it since the city is at the base of the mountains but the history heritage of the city is super, also can be found some forts and the National park des Calanques with hiking and a lot more of oportunities, so Marseille is a city worth to visit and there are a lot of things to do, make a good itinerary and will be great.

The food selection and the choices are just great and every place we went was just fantastic ,almost all people we approached were able to communicate in English (giant improvement) they were friendly and helpful and funny .what the city can improve is the cleanliness and number of homeless and drunks on the street in some parts they are just everywhere and especially when we arrived to main bus/train station we were shocked but it improves as you move away from that part of the city

Marseille offers a great cultural experience in southern France. There is a lot to see if you're looking to immerse yourself in a thorough tour of the city and its culture. However, if you're planning to spend your time on the beach and relax in the area, I recommend against it. The noise of the city is very noticeable, and the beaches aren't the most pleasant for relaxation, as they aren't well-kept. It's possible I visited during the wrong season, but there is still some work needed on the infrastructure. Give Marseille some time before deciding on it as your destination. I must say, however, that there is some culture here waiting to be discovered. Marseille is rich in history, and there are incredible hidden gems to be found, although the city makes it exhausting to do so. It's a great destination for discovering French culture, but not ideal for a relaxing vacation by the seaside.

Apart from visiting the city of Marseille, I also recommend the Calanques National Park. It can be reached very easily by bus from the Velodrome. It is a superb area, with wonderful views where you can go for a hike and then rest at the beach.

Great location in the center of Marseille, just a few footsteps from Vieux Port and all relevant bus/metro stations. Very quiet as the windows do look into a nice courtyard with plants. Very well maintained apartment - complete refurbishment seems less than 2 years ago and all technical items like lamps and heaters worked well. Kitchen equipment with no ditches or scratches. Even dishwasher salt and tabs have been provided! Big freezer with sufficient icebox. Lots of tourist guides in the bookshelf available. Good bed and cosy linen.

The apartment is located in a vibrant area of Marseille, in a walking distance from the Vieux Port. Being located in an old building, the elevator is nicely small - quite an experience. We enjoyed the facilities and had everything we needed in the apartment. The hosts were fantastic and very supportive with the check-in and check-out instructions. A perfect choice both for work and holiday purposes, with shops and restaurants around. An excellent spot to start exploring Marseille with all its facettes.

I stayed in this apartment for 11 days. I found it to be clean, comfortable and very well-equipped for preparing my meals. Additionally, it is charmingly decorated with attention to providing better quality linens and extra items for comfort such as pillows and throws. The location is ideal for experiencing all that the Vieux Port and Panier districts have to offer. as a bonus, the apartment faces west and the sunsets are gorgeous. This is now my go to place when I visit Marseille.

Unlike some of the commentaries in here, we loved the neighborhood, there was even a local tunisian bazaar very nearby. Yes, you should be a little bit careful at night because sometimes there are beggars on street. But the area is generally safe, it is on the most central street of Marseille Vieux Port and very close to all public transportation. Room size was quite sufficient and even though there was noise from the street, you dont hear anything if the windows were closed.

The location is beautiful and perfectly placed with good connectivity. The Vieux Port metro and bus stops just in front of the hotel. Lots of good food options nearby. The ships to go to Calanques start from the port in front of the hotel. Very good view of the port from the room. The hotel provides a good breakfast option at a reasonable price. The staff are very good and they speak very good English.

The studio is located in the very centre of Marseilles, close to the Vieux Port metro station. From here, you can easily walk to the main tourist attractions. The check-in is automatic: we got information about how to access online on the day of our arrival. The studio is small, with a window over a narrow street. Overall, the street is silent even though there is garbage all around.

It was a very spacious apartment- well equipped for a 5 day stay. We loved the quiet little bedroom balcony with a view of the Basilica of Notre Dame.
