We were in the Atkinson room on the top floor of the turret. Room was as expected with referance to the published photos. However we had no running water in the bathroom in the morning around 8am.This continued until we left our room around 8.30 for breakfast and was the same on our return. We were unable to shower or wash and had to brush our teeth with bottled water. We checked out around 9am and advised reception of the problem who advised they would look at it and then asked us to pay our £54 bill for drinks and breakfast. I have no problems with the bill, however I would have least expected as a gesture of good will to have been given the drinks (2 glasses of wine) for free. It was a great inconvience not been able to shower or wash as we had been out trekking the day before until late that evening. We were unable to advise reception of the fault immediately as there was no phone in the room.

Nice pub in a good rural location with parking outside. Good pub food and great breakfast the next day. Friendly helpful staff who were happy to do our breakfast a little earlier than their usual times as my husband had a long walk to do the next day.
It’s up for sale and needs TLC. The bones of it are great, the staff are unfriendly and a little weird!
Young lady waitress was the exception.
We had decided on the taster menu, it was not a taster, it was three starters a main and a slightly random dessert.
No alternative to mussels, which were tough, more deep fried cheese balls swapped in.
It was all entertaining, probably due to the amount of Prosecco we had… but I wouldn’t eat there again. Worth seeing the musty internals of the dining room and the very busy gardener who became the maitre de and then played piano!

A lovely village with a castle, river, woodlands, a great park under construction and a swimming pool. There are a few nice cafes, a couple of restaurants and pubs and some lovely gift shops. We ate at the 'Crown and Cushion' pub for a traditional meal and 'The Cutting Garden Cafe' for breakfast. We had a lovely stay and would definitely return.

Appleby is a stones throw from the Dales and the Lake District. The town itself is friendly with several options for food and drink. It does have a "small" weekly market and several independent shops. There are lots of walking trails and a haunted castle, a perfect hide away from city living.

We phoned up on the morning of our booking to confirm check in time. We were told they were cancelling our booking because they had no bed linen. They had not attempted to call and inform us. Be careful if you book this hotel

It was horrible from start to finish i had paid for 2 nights i left first thing in the morning after first night. It is nothing like the web says, one man that stunk of alcohol and bo checked us in he was also the cook and the bar man, one look at the state of the kitchen told me i wasnt eating in there, it wasnt even a bar it was a pop up with can of beer, to say i was devastated was an under statement , the bed squeeked all night with every movement, it was pitch black in the corridors we had to use the torches on our phones to find the room, do not go here

What a fantastic opportunity to stay in a truly memorable location. Yes the floors are uneven yes the things are old very old. The bathrooms are however up to date. You are a stones throw from town.
Staff were fantastic but stretched by the logistics a little. We had wifi other than that go to the bar the games room tv room or walk in the grounds….we loved it don’t go to a Castle if you want everything new…….I would recommend this to anyone who appreciates staying in a castle that is pretty much as it was in 1680s parts of it far older than that….. thanks for a great opportunity to stay in the awesome place
Lovely old building on the side of the road into Appleby. Just a short stroll into the town. Superb room; very comfortable bed with great quality bedding. Good bathroom.
The owners are super friendly and have put a lot of effort into making it comfortable for guests. The staff were very friendly and welcoming too.
Good restaurant and breakfast was fantastic.
We managed to park our motorbike at the side of the pub in front of one of the cottages.
We recommend this hotel.

This was our third time staying here. We just love the relaxing atmosphere, the excellent food in the restaurant. The staff are always very friendly and provide a great service. We always go on Valentines weekend and it is never too busy, it can actually feel very exclusive in this regard. The fantastic spa completes the experience
Comfortable, clean, well equipped. We appreciated the added extras: toiletries, milk, tea, coffee, biscuits etc.
Great location. Appleby is a lovely little town. Nice pubs nearby that serve good food. Surrounded by beautiful scenery & walking in the Pennines. Also the Lake District is only a short drive.
The hotel is in a small village , so easily found . There was hot chocolate along with tea/coffee in the room's hot drink making tray . It was quiet at night , so I had a good sleep . The wi-fi worked fine . The bed was comfortable . The shower was good , with plentiful hot water .
Manager and owner were so polite and engaging, as were the staff.
The history of the castle 🏰 is so interesting.
If you are looking for a castle break in a beautiful setting then give this castle a go.
Our drive to Appleby from Bradford was so scenic too. What's not to like??
Good location next to a very nice pub that does good food. Cottage is small but ideal for a couple. Log burner nice for cold nights. We actually thought the place was better than the pictures. 10 minute walk into Appleby center which is very nice.
It was our honeymoon night and the lady that owns the hotel stayed up so that she could see us. Now that's amazing!! Place is fabulous. Cosy, welcoming and extremely clean.
Charming hotel in the centre of Appleby near the castle walls. Brilliant dinner and gorgeous breakfast. Very comfortable room with good plumbing. Welcoming patron.
Staff were helpful and friendly. There was a cosy fire in the pub area. The beds were very comfortable and the room and bathroom were spacious and clean.
