The Tushielaw Inn, hotel in Selkirk

The Tushielaw Inn has a garden, terrace, a restaurant and bar in Selkirk. Located around 35 km from Melrose Abbey, the inn is also 23 km away from Traquair House.

A little oasis in the wild and woolly Borders with beautiful scenic surroundings. Rooms were well equipped with a warm and comfy bed. Slept like a log both nights. Breakfast was marvelous and a good home cooked menu on offer during the evening. Complimentary whiskey in the room was a nice wee touch. Alan and Sharon couldn't do enough for us and nothing was too much trouble. Loved everything about the place and can't recommend the Tushielaw Inn highly enough.

We had a few hours to use before checking in to the Hotel so we went to Walter Scotts Court Room with a very entertaining guide - Julian? Also went to the museum with equally informative guide - sorry not sure of her name. Both are FREE as is the parking! Highly recoomend Peony Rose for food.

An interesting looking town that I would like to get to know better. Excellent meals out at the Fleece Inn and Kitchen and at Number One Bistro. The Riding of the Marches was on which showed the community spirit.

Selkirk is a small border town with small individual shops and cafes. We stayed 3 nights at Philipburn Hotel on the edge of Selkirk and really used it as a base to tour around other places in the borders, Floors Castle, Kelso, Melrose, Scotts View.

There's not a lot actually in Selkirk - it is suffering as are so many places with the impact of C-19, but it's a good base for Holy Island and the Roslyn Chapel. We booked the County Hotel as it's in the centre and as we were travelling by motorcycle wanted to be at somewhere that provided food or was available in walking distance.

Selkirk is perhaps a little over-shadowed by the Peebles,...

Selkirk is perhaps a little over-shadowed by the Peebles, Jedburgh and Kelso within the Scottish Borders and while undoubtedly smaller should not be overlooked. There are a number of museums and Haining Park and Loch, just a few minutes' walk from the town centre, is great for woodland walks and a circuit of pretty Haining Loch. There are a few restaurants, including pub-dining, Chinese and Thai, in the town centre together with a range of take-aways. Selkirk makes a good base for a visit to the Scottish Borders and is a well-located stopping off point for a few days if travelling further north within Scotland and headling south into England.

I travel frequently and stay in a huge assortment of properties. While this hotel is still (quite rightly) exercising an abundance of caution regarding COVID-19 precautions it is not open to then general public and therefore the front desk isn't available other than for check-in/check out, so the place does tend to look closed at first sight. However, the interior, the welcome, the unpretentious hearty food and the service from the staff couldn't be better.

The hotel is located on the outskirts of Selkirk, with pleanty of secure parking. It's a good base for touring the Borders, as we did. It provides breakfast and dinner, provided you book in advance (evening before for breakfast and in the morning for dinner). The food is of a good standard, probably pre-prepared, but some interesting options. The staff are friendly and very helpful. We had superb views over rolling countryside.

Absolutely delighted with our stay! The hospitality from Sonny, his wee ma and the team was exceptional. Sonny in particular was so attentive and made it such a warm and welcoming experience. The meals (breakfasts and dinner) were fantastic. The hotel's picturesque location added to the charm, and the hotel itself is lovely. Can't praise it enough, I just hope we manage to return soon ❤️

Talk about location, location, location!. A glorious drive up the Ettrick valley from Selkirk, beautiful views all round from the property, and another spectacular drive through hills to Howick when we left. So peaceful. Good company in the evening with our host at the bar, with a log fire burning, and all neeeds catered for. Comfortable room, and good breakfast the next morning.

The wood burner in the entrance hall is very welcoming in the evening. The first night steak dinner was delicious. The hotel has been recently renovated but retains its charming Scottish feel. Within a 15 minute walk to Selkirk it was ideal for us to visit some of the local attractions and sample the lovey borders walks. We hope to return again in the new year.

Room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. There was everything in it that you need. Despite looking on to the front of the hotel, there wasn’t much traffic noise and we slept well. The breakfast was freshly made and very tasty with vegetarian options and Oliver was very helpful. In the evening we ate at the local Indian restaurant which was excellent.

Spacious rooms, fitted out to a very high standard. A wide selection of books and board games. Fully stocked with kitchenware, bathroom & cleaning products. Spotlessly clean. A lovely quiet area in the countryside, but only a mile from Selkirk. Loved watching the swifts darting around outside.

The Tushielaw Inn is a traditional inn that has escaped the relentless updating of chain establishments. Don't visit if you want a smart, modern hotel, but if the prospect of an experience evocative of past decades intrigues you, soak it up.
