A compact and picturesque little village; a good selection of pubs, cafes and restaurants - not cheap, but very welcoming. We especially enjoyed the live music and pizza night on Saturday at the Cheese Shop. Excellent base as a location for exploring the Lakes; as long as you have access to bikes or a car - there's not much in the way of public transport.

Delightful, friendly, well-equipped and pretty village.
Delightful, friendly, well-equipped and pretty village. Some local walks were recommended by locals and were gorgeous. The shops are perfect, great selection of stock and utterly charming. The pubs are really good, the Royal Oak serves huge portions of well cooked and flavourful, homemade food with a friendly welcome. Easy drive to seriously beautiful spots of Keswick, Coniston and Windermere. Went to Cumbria zoo which is lovely. Not to mention the next level spectacular that is L’Enclume in the village. Highly recommend.

Caramel is a beautiful, small village with many pubs and restaurants and a few shops to browse. It’s peaceful and a lovely place to stop for a coffee or alcoholic beverage. There is a great cheese deli where you can choose from lots of different cheeses made locally and even try before you buy with a glass of wine or locally made ale. The famous mitchelin star restaurant L’Enclume is amazing and of course there is the famous sticky toffee pudding shop.

Cartmel is a quaint picturesque village.
Cartmel is a quaint picturesque village. It is lovely to stroll around.
Quaint little antique and book shops, lovely little square with inns around it, the church, sheep and lambs in the fields. Lovely!
Our expectations were high when we saw it but...
There is almost no parking in the village except for 1hr or 2hr slots. Not much use for staying guests. The nearest overnight car parking was at the race course. £10 overnight charge. The card payment was not working. Coins only!!! We and others were searching for £10 in coins so that we could leave in the morning!
Cartmel is largely shut from Sunday to Wednesday (slight exaggeration but you get the drift). Eateries close early or are not open at all.
Cartmel has its own brewery. The brewery eatery only does Thurs, Fri, Sat!
Thanks goodness for the Pig and Whistle which is only a short walk from the centre. If you want good food, good drink all at reasonable prices then it is a life saver. There is also free parking nearby which you can use overnight. To be clear I have no affiliation to it but it did serve us well. We ate and drank there other than on our first night.

Cartmel is a small village served by several pubs, cafes and restaurants. There is a reasonable car park that is just on the edge of the village adjacent to the racecourse, leaving a short walk to the shops and pubs. The place to stay on a visit to L’Enclume.
Fantastic bed and breakfast in the epicentre of lovely Cartmel. Communication with Rachel prior to arrival was perfect. The hotel is beautiful, both the public areas and the room in which we stayed. The room, recently re-decorated, is as comfortable as it is beautiful. Modern bathroom, super comfrotable bed, tea kettle/espresso machine - who needs more? Breakfast was stellar, be it the full English or the continental. We'll be delighted to come back and we thank Rachel for making our weekend in Cartmel special!
Hi, stayed at the hotel with a group of friends for our annual Christmas catch-up. The rooms were lovely, stylish, clean great bathroom facilities. Lovely bar area were we had lunch and a good selection of gin ( our drink of choice ). We had a meal booked at Rogan & co and the hotel was perfectly located for this. We had the full English breakfast which was cooked to perfection, gorgeous scrambled eggs for our vegetarian. Great location in cartmel square, near all the lovely quaint shops and pubs
Excellent level of comfort and cleanliness. The cottage was warm and cosy, with effective central heating, good shower. Beds and lounges were all very comfortable.
Location, right in the middle of Cartmel, was excellent both for local pubs and places to eat, as well as a great base for fell walking /running.
Perfect location just a very short walk from the Village. Cottage was very clean, cosy and very well equipped. Owners very accommodating. Had a perfect few days away and would definitely recommend Causeway Cottage and will be on the list when we visit Cartmel again.
Staff - attentive, regularly checking service, but not over the top. Great views with beautiful sunset if you're lucky. Traditional restaurant menu (not classic pub food) chicken and steak meals we ordered were delicious, hot and plentiful. Good choice of hotel
Lovely location. Very quiet and peaceful. Cosy, comfortable property. Very well-organised and well equipped. Good walks from the property. Good cafes in walking distance at Cartmel. A pub with very good food a short drive or longish walk away in Grange.
Stayed 3 nights bed, breakfast and evening meal and everything was great.Food was excellent as were the staff.A really lovely old fashioned hotel with great service obviously a priority.Lovely walk into Cartmel village and close to the racecourse as well.
we’ve stayed here twice and it’s a lovely hotel just outside of cartmel. You can walk into town but be warned it’s a bit sketchy if you do so at night at there are no streetlights and it’s a long windy road.
Rooms and big and comfortable beds too.
Location was amazing. Hotel very beautiful retaining its charm and character. We love Cartmel and usually stay elsewhere but it was fully booked so decided on the Old Grammar school. Beautifully decorated throughout. Staff very attentive
We loved the pod!!!! As soon as we arrived we felt settled and is 1 of the biggest pods we have stayed in. Ideal location as walking distance to Cartmel. Perfect for a few days away from city life. We will be back!
Feels like home.luxury home.very nice cabin.2 floors.all new.hi quality furniture and kitchen appliances. Washing machine and dryer. Lovely. Highly recommended. Owner is very nice.one if the best!
Staff very welcoming and accommodating, breakfast basic but good, room lovely, location perfect - if you're going to Cartmel, you're not leaving it, so location is hard to get wrong!
We loved this property. It has everything we needed. Everything has been done to a very high standard. Fantastic views, fabulous location, walking distance to everything in Cartmel.
The Royal Oak was ideally situated for our visit to Cartmel. The beer garden was a pleasant way to spend an afternoon and Rogan & co is practically next door.
