In the heart of Dunwich, this traditional inn offers home-cooked food and real ales. There is free private parking, and the beach is a brief walk from The Ship.

The Ship Inn built 1868 is the last building on the High Street before making a left turn to the beach (pebble/shingle). It is approximately 200 metres to the beach and beach side tea rooms and car park.
Our room 'Leat Hill' was on a shared landing up a flight of stairs with the room overlooking a paved patio and the garden. The room was en-suite (bath shower over), comfortable, well furnished,, and very warm even without the heating.
There was plentiful hot water, a nice comfortable bath and good range of toiletries. It was large enough for two adults and two small dogs with two dog beds, drinking bowls and dog treats being provided. This is a genuine 'dog friendly' establishment with dogs welcome in all areas.
We had breakfast everyday and the menu had a good choice of cereal, cooked breakfasts, for all tastes, and drinks all served at the table. We had two evening meals (main course with sweet) and the food and service were excellent.
The conservatory was our choice of venue for eating but we also dined in the restaurant. The garden area is large and well equipped with tables and there is also a garden bar.
There is parking for six cars plus a reserved space for people with mobility concerns otherwise it is street side parking (not a problem). Dunwich is a very quiet village even during day despite the beach being so close to the Inn.
The Staff were outstanding throughout our stay.

Midway between Southwold and Aldeburgh, this modernised, rustic inn has an excellent restaurant and refurbished, stylish rooms. It is an ideal base for exploring the Suffolk Heritage Coast.

This was very clearly pointed out to me before travelling.

Dunwich is a tiny place but well known in Norfolk and Suffolk for walks and bird-watching as well as the history of the lost town, so don't go there for the night-life. However it is a great base to visit nearby Walberswick, Westleton, Southwold and a bit further Aldeburgh - either by car, bike or on foot depending on weather and mobility. Great area for dog walkers.
We stayed and ate in The Ship Inn, and for the second night we ate at The Crown in Westleton 2.5 miles away.
We were late in the season so the village museum was closed but there was other interpretation around, and ruins to visit. Unless you have a car or bike, you would need to be on a walking tour as it is a long way from anywhere by foot. There is a 6.5mile round walk to Southwold I believe

Pleasant room, tasteful decor and lighting, but overlooking a noisy courtyard. On balance we felt the room over priced.
Great location and restaurant food very tasty and well presented, although insufficient options for vegetarians and vegans.
Staff let the place down; they didn't know where we should store our bikes and also it was our wedding anniversary and we had asked for a specific table to be reserved. This was on the booking, but not followed through by staff on the night.

The beach is fantastic for walking in both directions.
The beach is fantastic for walking in both directions. There are circular walks for those who are fit. Beach never appears to have rubbish and dog friendly.
Dunwich a very small village with really just the Ship Inn and the museum. In the summers months there is a cafe on the beach.
Car parking at the beach is free so a real bonus.

Great walking and scenery.
Great walking and scenery. Got lost for a short while on the Sandlings forest walk but found my way back. There's really nothing to do but visit the pub, a small museum, a church and the beach but that was enough for me.
The Ship at Dunwich is full of character and is quite quirky. We were able to eat dinner either inside, where there was a full menu, or outside in the "Field Kitchen" which served pizzas as well as a limited selection of main courses. Breakfast was very nice and could be eaten either inside or in the outside area. My husband loved the selection of ales available. I believe it is a favourite for dog owners as there are lots of walks to be found in the forest. The staff could not have been more helpful.
We loved our room and the fact that it was cleaned everyday. It was in a quiet area of the hotel and the bed was very comfortable. The facilities in the room were more than adequate. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The "Ship" was very busy during our stay, but they were extremely helpful.
The food was lovely, especially the generous portion of breakfast.
The location was beautiful - near the sea and some lovely walks. The menu was excellent for dinner so we didn't have to travel to eat. Breakfast was also brilliant - with a great choice of breakfast menu. It was in easy reach of Dunwich Heath and MInsmere and we even saw the elusive Dartford Warbler AND a Bittern.
Friendly staff and close to the beach.
Nice location.
Parking was adequate.
Dogs are allowed at the hotel
Complimentary water , lovely tea ,coffee and cookies.
Great bed and linen.
Complimentary toiletries.
Nice shower.
Great Wi-Fi
Smart TV allowed me to cast Netflix and Amazon .
Clean, comfy, good food and a superb location just behind Dunwich beach. Lovely short walks from the Ship up to Greyfriars and along to the church and beach to start each day. Quiet from mid-late evening at this time of year. Good coffee in the room.
Fantastic evening meal, dreamy nights sleep and amazing cooked breakfast all in a beautiful location ready for our visit to NT Dunwich Heath and RSPB Minsmere
