Perfect hotel for a short stay. Great base for exploring the borders. Lovely spacious & clean room. Furnishings & decor modern & characterful. Fresh flowers throughout the hotel. Friendly, chatty & informative hands-on owners & compliments to the chef, as the food was the best we’d had in much of Scotland when travelling. Decent selection of drinks at the bar & the dining environment was the right mix of decorative but informal. Highly recommend & great value for the price.
Carfraemill is set outside Lauder, at the junctions of the A68 and A697 roads. This charming Borders property offers a pretty setting, a terrace and à la carte restaurant.

Lauder is a great village with everything you need. Spotty Dog for coffee and a Scotch egg, Flat Cat Gallery for gift shopping and cake. There is a butchers, post office, pharmacy and co-op. As well as a beautiful church, castle and surrounding areas with lots of history and natural beauty. An underrated gem

Excellent accommodation within a beautiful building of great historical significance and set in magnificent countryside. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful making our stay relaxing and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend the castle tour. Our guide (Norman) had a wealth of knowledge with regard to both the castle itself and the Maitland family who have occupied it over the centuries.

A good variety of places in Lauder to dine out.
There is good bus services to Edinburgh + other towns in the Borders.
The bus stops are just outside the apartment.
We stayed at the Black Bull Hotel for one night as we were attending the Michael Bublè concert in nearby Floors Castle (25 minute drive from the hotel) We enjoyed a delicious evening meal and breakfast with our stay - couldn’t fault either.
The hotel has been beautifully refurbished during Covid and the interior and finish are spot on however the exterior could do with some TLC.
Would definitely return!
Amazing stay! We stayed in the sculleries, the rooms were extremely comfortable, very clean. The castle is set in lovely grounds, a great place to unwind. We couldn't have asked for anything better. The location was ideal for exploring the local area. The Black Bull in Lauder was a great place to eat out.
Lauder was our base and we visited several tourist attractions up to an hour’s drive away.
The apartment was very comfortable and we so enjoyed our stay. Three very large bedrooms and bathrooms all of a very high standard. Walked the castle and river walks. They even opened the gift shop for us.
I am a retired professional chef and hotel manager for Hyatt hotels and rarely am I so impressed with a facility to the degree that I am with the Black Bull. If the opportunity presents itself you must stay here and will not be disappointed whatsoever.
The staff were very friendly. The food was excellent. The room was spotless. The location is ideal for exploring The Borders and is within easy reach of Edinburgh and the Lothians and also Northumberland. I happily recommend this excellent hotel.
Lovely property, decorated beautifully with a superb shower.
Two good size double rooms.
Everything we could needed was provided. We travel to Lauder a couple of times a year and this was one of the best accommodations we have stayed in.
The hotel was excellent, very nice interior, well appointed, comfortable room, excellent food, great service and friendly staff and owners. A great base for exploring the Scottish Borders. I would gladly stay again if in the area.
Breakfast was outstanding, everything you could ask for and served in a very pleasant room with an open fire. Bedroom was quiet and very comfortable. Great location just a few minutes walk away from pubs and food in Lauder.
Location was quiet, but good base for touring around. Food was excellent and the owner, Allan, and his manager, Paul, went above and beyond any expectations. Would absolutely recommend this hotel! Thank you guys :)
The most friendly and welcoming hosts you could wish to meet. They have a passion for what they do, for their superbly appointed hotel and their guests. Excellent food.
Old characterful hotel. Restaurant food was exceptional. King size room was very comfortable and worth the little extra on the price. Staff were all very good as well.
Great location in Lauder High Street. Was perfect place to stay for a wedding at Thirlestane Castle. Place was wonderfully clean and tidy and good host.
