From prehistory to the present, the very essence of Plymouth has been inextricably linked to the sea. The Pilgrim Fathers departed from here and named their new Massachusetts settlement after it, and Sir Francis Drake famously finished his game of bowls on The Hoe before combatting the Spanish Armada.
Western Europe’s largest naval base – HMNB Devonport – is in its natural harbour, and in The Barbican fishing boats bob up and down by cobbled streets lined with historic buildings. Jacka Bakery here is the oldest in Britain and there are plenty of galleries, bars and restaurants, though Union Street has the best nightlife.
At one end of the street is the Theatre Royal, and from the other ferries depart to France and Spain, passing the Mount Batten peninsula and offshore rocks that once housed Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, now in Hoe Park next to the Royal Citadel.
Overlooking the park is the Lord Mayor’s residence, once home to Waldorf and Nancy Astor, and other street and building names are reminders of Plymouth’s illustrious connections.
Other attractions include the National Marine Aquarium, the City Museum and Art Gallery and Grade II-listed Saltram House. All are easily reached from Booking.com’s Plymouth accommodation, including luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap guest houses and country houses with parking.

The older town area where we stayed is lovely & near to the iconic Hoe & Barbican.
Sadly the town of my youth is soul less due to so much "concrete", however work is proceeding to revamp the old boulevards with paving, seating & flower beds so in the coming months it will be far better.
Like all towns some of the larger department store buildings & banks are no longer and stand empty - once they are redeveloped it will be much better
Very easy to get around walking, no need to use public transport for shops, hoe & barbican

We stayed to visit our daughter and partner while they are at Uni in Plymouth. We stayed with our dog Lara. Property was few step down to accommodation (we have seen worse) good area to dry Lara before letting her in to lounge /dinner through to bed room to the right bathroom to the left into kitchen This is a great location 2 min to Hoe, 10 min at most to Barbican. The host are amazing, really accommodating after a long journey. The welcome pack is so welcome just to get a tea or coffee and milk, every thing was there, including shower gel, shampoo, conditioner hand wash, washing up liquid to name but a few treats . Quite a few places could take note. If cleaning product available most people will help to keep it clean.
We would defiantly stay there again. Thank you so much

The Hoe and Barbican areas are lovely and definitely worth visiting. The Barbican area is great for eating out and a stroll along the Hoe is a must. The Royal William Yard is also a pleasant and interesting place to visit.
The modern city centre is quite tatty and run down so worth avoiding.

Some great gems in and around the Barbican.
Some great gems in and around the Barbican.
It is a city under scaffolding and behind hoardings. Hopefully it will reinvent itself soon, but in the meantime walking can dull (if not threatening).
It has a long drawn-out centre, For example, 25 minute walk or a Taxi from the Barbican to / from the station at £7.50
It is easily accessible, simple and easy through Devonport Train Station. Plymouth main station is about 30 min walk and buses are easy to figure out. The place was across lovely Devonport Park. Neighborhood was quiet. Bottom line: good price for the night. If it’s a quick trip and there is no need for frills, this is perfect. pubs near by and the ferry to cornwall’s Torpoint is 10 - 15 minutes. There is a bus station at the ferry terminal. Taxis as well.
Very nice family run hotel, modern and classical decor. I found them very helpful and informative,
Situated in a very historical part of plymouth central, the views of the sea and harbour at the end of the road was simply breathtaking.
Home of the Mayflower pilgrims, Francis Drake, Charles Kingsleys famous book 'Westward Ho" was written in Hoe, which is the name of the town that the hotel is situated.

The location of the hotel is great. Once parked we walked into town, we walked to Plymouth Hoe and out for dinner to the Waterfront one evening. The room was large and clean, though that is what we requested and paid for, so nothing more than what was as expected. Reception staff were very welcoming, helpful and friendly, making booking in us and sorting the parking registration system very easy.
The staff were outstanding, always caring. the breakfast was good to eat. the room was clean and tidy with tea and coffee. I had a support dog in the hotel due to my disability and they were kind to her. the hotel has a lift, overall I enjoyed my stay there and will come again, central location, near the city centre and Plymouth Hoe, the staff were very helpful and polite.
Just a perfect location for visiting this part of Plymouth; right on the harbor and 5 mins from Plymouth hoe. Literally could not be more convenient for boat trips as is right opposite. Also right opposite the 25 bus stop to the city center, though it's a pretty easy 15 minute walk. Also liked that the accommodation has a separate door. But best of all is the view.
Future Inn is ideal for families who want to spend time outdoors in Devon and Cornwall and use the hotel as their base! "Glorious" breakfast, even my daughters rated as top of the best! Comfortable matresses-beds, the stay was very comfortable, quite and pleasant. We used the hotel as our base to visit many places around Plymouth and it was rewarding!!
Delux room was great, hotel staff are superb - nothing was too much trouble, a very personal service.
Perfect location for the Plymouth Pavillions which is at the bottom of the car park (£3 per day).
Would not hesitate to stay here again.
Breakfast is great, bar food and restaurant food is superb - we've eaten in both, and they are excellent
Beautifully presented room. Tea making equipment was spotless as was the bedroom and bathroom. Quiet location but still within walking distance of everything you need to visit. Easy entry system and great contact on first arrival. If I ever need accommodation in Plymouth again I'll try and book here. Great stay from Paul and Finley.
Family friendly welcoming hotel. Staff were lovely and went the extra mile to make our stay comfortable. Good fresh cooked breakfast to order with lots of choice. Good choice of cereal, fruit juices and hot drinks. Parking for free at the rear of the hotel. Only a couple minutes walk to Plymouth Hoe.
Beautiful room, in particular the bathroom was stunning and so clean
Comfortable bed and bedding
Lovely views and amazing location
Would say it was one of the best hotels available in Plymouth
Nice toiletries
Dyson fan which was useful
Lovely tea bags!
The location was excellent, close to both the harbour and the University/city centre. It was easy to walk everywhere so once we got to Plymouth we did not really need the car. The car parking facility at the hotel is a bonus.
The property was very comfortable and an excellent space for my needs as I was visiting Plymouth. It was an easy walk to most places in town. It had all of the conveniences I needed. I would absolutely stay here again.
beautiful boutique hotel close to The Hoe and Barbican. Ian and Suzy are fantastic hosts. the hotel is within easy (walking) reach of all Plymouth has to offer highly, highly recommended. 11/10
A classic gem. Historic hotel that didn’t try to renovate away all the old style charm. Comfortable, clean, friendly staff. Would definitely stay again & recommended to friends.
