FAQs about hotels in Plymouth

Life By the Ocean Wave

From prehistory to the present, the very essence of Plymouth has been inextricably linked to the sea. The Pilgrim Fathers departed from here and named their new Massachusetts settlement after it, and Sir Francis Drake famously finished his game of bowls on The Hoe before combatting the Spanish Armada.

Western Europe’s largest naval base – HMNB Devonport – is in its natural harbour, and in The Barbican fishing boats bob up and down by cobbled streets lined with historic buildings. Jacka Bakery here is the oldest in Britain and there are plenty of galleries, bars and restaurants, though Union Street has the best nightlife.

At one end of the street is the Theatre Royal, and from the other ferries depart to France and Spain, passing the Mount Batten peninsula and offshore rocks that once housed Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, now in Hoe Park next to the Royal Citadel.

Overlooking the park is the Lord Mayor’s residence, once home to Waldorf and Nancy Astor, and other street and building names are reminders of Plymouth’s illustrious connections.

Other attractions include the National Marine Aquarium, the City Museum and Art Gallery and Grade II-listed Saltram House. All are easily reached from Booking.com’s Plymouth accommodation, including luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap guest houses and country houses with parking.

We stayed to visit our daughter and partner while they are at Uni in Plymouth. We stayed with our dog Lara. Property was few step down to accommodation (we have seen worse) good area to dry Lara before letting her in to lounge /dinner through to bed room to the right bathroom to the left into kitchen This is a great location 2 min to Hoe, 10 min at most to Barbican. The host are amazing, really accommodating after a long journey. The welcome pack is so welcome just to get a tea or coffee and milk, every thing was there, including shower gel, shampoo, conditioner hand wash, washing up liquid to name but a few treats . Quite a few places could take note. If cleaning product available most people will help to keep it clean. We would defiantly stay there again. Thank you so much

The Hoe and Barbican areas are lovely and definitely worth visiting. The Barbican area is great for eating out and a stroll along the Hoe is a must. The Royal William Yard is also a pleasant and interesting place to visit. The modern city centre is quite tatty and run down so worth avoiding.

Lots of shops, restaurants, pubs, cafes all within walking distance and a bit of everything you could want or need! A mix of chain places and smaller, independent and a real lively atmosphere even during the week! Highly recommend Monty’s cafe on the Barbican!

Some great gems in and around the Barbican.

Some great gems in and around the Barbican. It is a city under scaffolding and behind hoardings. Hopefully it will reinvent itself soon, but in the meantime walking can dull (if not threatening). It has a long drawn-out centre, For example, 25 minute walk or a Taxi from the Barbican to / from the station at £7.50

The whole hotel is being refurbished, inside and out. Our room was pristine, with new carpets, furniture and bathroom. This is a gorgeous, grand Victorian building with many original features. The dining room has impressive high ceilings and plasterwork.and original sash windows, Cooked breakfast was by pre-order and included in the price. It was hot, freshly cooked and our specific needs (vegetarian) were catered for. The staff were pleasant, knowledgeable and friendly. This hotel is literally a minute's walk from Plymouth Hoe.

I received a warm welcome at this family-run hotel in a superb location just minutes away from Plymouth Hoe. My room was very clean and comfortable. There is a wide breakfast choice served by a friendly and efficient waitress in a light and airy room- no windowless basement breakfast room here as I have encountered elsewhere! I will be making several trips to Plymouth and it took me a while to find the right place to stay. I am happy to have finally found the Invicta as it meets all my needs.

We loved that the room opened to a private courtyard, instead of a hallway as in a hotel, so we could leave the curtains open and have a lot of natural light. We can only imagine how lovely it would be in the summer - unfortunately it rained a lot when we were there. Nick and Ali were extremely friendly and responsive. They let us know when they wouldn't be available but were available when we really needed them to be, such as when we lost the room key. Sorry.

Copthorne Hotel Plymouth has a comfortable location right in the city centre 10 min walk from the train station. I stayed in a twin room with my 3-year old son. The room is spacious enough, the bathroom had a bath. The room was warm overnight and the curtains isolated street lights. The bed was comfortable. The fan is available in the room instead of A/C. We ordered a delivery from a local take away, it was promptly delivered and available at the reception.

The room was very confortable and spacious. Plymouth Hoe and Barbican are 5 min walk from the accomodation which was nice for occasional walk and a meal out. The building was nice and quiet and overal was very enjoyable stay.
