The property was maintained and decorated beautifully, in keeping with the age of the building. It has a lovely atmosphere which gives a relaxing feeling and is a stepback into the world and time in which it was created.
Amy is a wonderful host and ensures you a tremendous welcome, doing all she can to make you comfortable.
Gardens are waking up to spring and will be in full bloom soon.
A fabulous location for enjoying the Westmorland countryside and superb landscapes for walking, painting, etc.
Will be glad to return.

We were on our way from Devon to Glasgow, and wanted somewhere not too far off the M6 to break the journey up for a night. We honestly couldn't have picked anywhere better than The Greyhound in Shap. Just a few minutes off the motorway, but it feels so tranquil and rural, you'd never think you were so close to a major route. Excellent as a base for the Lake District, but far enough out of the busiest tourist spots to offer great value. Such a lovely little hotel with a proper pub/restaurant downstairs, serving great food and beer. Our room was small but perfectly-formed, with a super comfortable bed. We will definitely use this place again if we're up in the area again. Highly recommended.

We stayed only 1 night and ate at the hotel, but it might be worth driving 4 miles to Alston if staying more than 1 night. The food was OK, but a little pricey.
I would definitely consider staying there again to break our journey from the Midlands to Scotland.

Location is just off motorway.
Location is just off motorway. Website states 2 restaurants and bar selling food until 10pm, this is not the case. Only 1 restaurant with limited choice and very basic food with vegetables and potatoes undercooked. Rooms are in need of refurbishment and lift and restaurant needed a clean. Food on the floor at our table from breakfast sitting. Wine is expensive for what it was. Receptionist and bar person were lovely but manager was rude and abrupt.

It was very peaceful location.
It was very peaceful location. Not far from M6 so ideal for a stop over or if staying in Lakes great for going off to spend the day out. Even better being able to come back to the peace and quiet after the hustle and bustle of the busy towns in the Lake District. Food was great so get a half board stay as really good value for money. Lovely places to walk through their own woods and see the delightful red squirrels that are resident there. Get free food for them from reception

Biscuits in the room would of been the icing on the cake, to be honest we've never stayed in a hotel where biscuits were not provided in the room. Bit petty but we love a biscuit with our early morning bedroom coffee.
Our room was warm, bright and clean and the bed very comfortable. There was also plenty of tea and coffee available. The bathroom was modern and the shower great. Breakfast was good and plentiful with a variety of options. Although Shap does not have many facilities itself, the town of Penrith is just a 15 minute drive away. We had booked months in advance and experienced excellent value for money.
Let's be honest, the hotel is dated, tired and needs modernising. The small road to the hotel is littered with potholes... but, it's an old-world hotel and you just have to embrace it. The staff were superb and very friendly, and it just added to an overall great experience. Also, there's a lovely bit of woodland in the hotel grounds to explore.
The bedroom was clean and bright, The bar area has the feel you expect for a very old coaching inn tweed sofas leather chairs sturdy oak tables and welcoming bar staff It took only a few minutes to get to the hotel from the m6 but felt like you had arrived in the heart of the countryside Breakfast was a good variety and beautifully cooked
Excellent hotel. Friendly helpful staff with top-notch customer service skills.
Good sized and very clean en suite rooms.
Breakfast & evening meals were 10/10.
All in all an enjoyable stay and we felt at ease during all of our 3 night stay.
Would highly recommend. Iain & lesley (Evesham worcestershire)
Great place to stop overnight on the Coast to Coast. This leg on C2C to shap is a tough day of 16 miles and takes in the highest climb of the whole route. Thankfully food is served until 8.45 pm and the Lamb Henry on the specials board is with out doubt one of the best meals I've EVER had!!
Very nice studio with good en-suite bathroom in a very good location. This is a barn conversion just off the main street of Shap, a village with a co-op shop near the accommodation and a chippy equally close by. The studio is on the ground floor and has parking outside the door.
Beautiful cottage, very comfortable bed and great value for money. Loved the fact that they are dog friendly and that our furry family members were able to come with us! Shap Abbey is very close by and worth having a walk around if you want to take your dogs for a walk nearby.
Lovely hotel and friendly staff. Rooms were clean, the bar offered excellent meals and the breakfast was fantastic. Car parking at the back was a bonus. Really enjoyed our stay here and would highly recommend staying here or having an evening meal.
Really lovely hotel with a pub downstairs. The hotel itself was more than accommodating with lovely staff the room was comfortable and really good value. I'd recommend the pub for dinner as we had a amazing meal! And was very reasonable priced.
Room was clean and cosy, English breakfast was good, area around hotel was quiet and beautiful. The staff was very nice and helpful. There is a free parking space. Next to the hotel there is a small grove, perfect place for walk.
The breakfast was well prepared, with a good selection of foods. The location of the Hotel was as expected and the traffic noise was acceptable as the A6 road used to be a main road into Scotland prior to the M6.
The surroundings are excellent. The hotel is situated right next to the fells, and there is a lovely short walk outside up past the rapids. It can be a bit boggy, but we survived without any fancy footwear.
All aspects of our one night in Shap were very satisfactory.A warm welcome, helpful advice.A very comfortable bed,good-sized bathroom and quiet! Breakfast was tremendous.
