Stranraer is a ferry port with good bus links to Dumfries.

Stranraer is a ferry port with good bus links to Dumfries. The tow, itself had a "sedate ' feel to it. Traffic was slow and polite. Lots of fish and chips shops. The central castle / tower house is the only place of interest and museum. Famous centre for curling with rink open in winter months.

Absolutely highly recommend this beautiful stylish hotel, very clean, great food with a warm welcome Excellent location on the sea front and lots of parking spaces. Beautiful reception area and staff were very welcoming and helpful. Room was very spacious with a small table and two chairs, large comfy bed and good facilities. Evening meal was lovely, very tasty and well presented with good choices; as was breakfast the next morning, absolutely perfect. The dining room is beautiful and set out nicely. The bars were both superb to have a drink and relax. Absolutely highly recommend this charming hotel, simply one of the best we have stayed in! We will definitely return!

Stranraer is wet and windy and very rundown.

Stranraer is wet and windy and very rundown. There is not a restaurant open past 9 o’clock. Very few takeaways and a Tesco’s and a Morrisons. There is nothing to do past 1730. Once the shops are closed our hotel we arrived at 2045 And the restaurant had already closed, there was no room service we had to go out in the pouring rain and wind to get a takeaway as they would not allow takeaway delivered to the hotel or to be eaten in hotel bar area which only one was open. We had to eat it in a room and it was cold by the time you got back so complete waste of money. This hotel is rundown and has been the same for the last 20 years. Last time we visited it. Stranraer was bustling, then as the port was in town. But no, there is only cairn Ryan you can leave from and it is 6 miles out of the village. All it’s good for is getting the ferry to Belfast.

Firstly, ships no longer berth in Stranraer as your photo depicts.Nothing wrong with Stranraer or the people who are very friendly, but industry and employment is desperately needed together with an improvement of the road network, in particular the 100 mile long A75. All thanks to the Scottish government who are spending the money on the capital City.

We were quite sad at how downtrodden Stranraer looked since we were there in 2019. It seems very little shops survived the pandemic and there is now very little to do. The buildings could do with a clean or a repaint. This once bustling town is a bit sorry for itself.

Stranraer itself has become very shabby and rundown.

Stranraer itself has become very shabby and rundown. However there are wonderful attractions all around it. Logan Botanic Garden was brilliant with a decent cafe. Portpatrick is a beautiful small village with lots of cliff walks while Sandhead has a fabulous beach. Castle Kennedy Gardens and Glenwhan Gardens are also nearby while Wigtown Book Town isn't too far away.

Large room with good facilities and a beautiful view. Chairs and table by the window to look out from. Our room was cleaned and replenished during the day. Our host was very accommodating and happy to make an early breakfast which was very tasty. We visited the area to go to the Wee Aird Dairy Farm which was amazing. There are some other wonderful places to visit near Stranraer - Logan Botanical Garden, Mull of Galloway and Castle Kennedy Gardens. We had glorious weather too!

Really good stay in Portpatrick. Ian was a great host. The lodges are an ideal base for exploring the south west of Scotland. The lodges cater well for a family and provide the usual mod cons that will keep the kids happy. It’s an added bonus that they’re also dog friendly. Great views and is in a beautiful part of the world. I wouldn’t hesitate to book again.

Very accommodating hosts who welcomed us (at nearly 10pm & almost 4 hrs late due to a delayed ferry from Belfast) with a "wee nip" of whisky to help us to our bed. Surprisingly large room with a very comfortable kingsize bed. Breakfast was very generous with several options available and an impressive selection of home-made preserves. Thoroughly recommended.

Balyett is wonderfully located just outside Stranraer, off the road to Cairnryan. The room was extremely comfortable and I loved the bed; it was very soft (which I like) but may not be to everyone's taste. The bathroom was small but was modern and clean. Lovely breakfast on one long table.

Brilliant location if you have a car. Stranraer is a couple of miles away for food shopping, and south is some fabulous little towns like Portpatrick. The scenery was amazing, and the cottage is very near the Southern Uplands Way walking route.
