Dale Head Hall Lakeside Hotel, hotel in Thirlmere

On the shores of Lake Thirlmere in the Cumbrian Lake District, this charming 16th century residence offers spectacular lake views, individually styled rooms and free Wi-Fi.

I booked this hotel because of the location, near to Keswick. After parking we walked round the front looking for the entrance. Tha view from the front was amazing but we couldn't open the door so we went round the back and finally made an entry. This is where the ,fun' started .It was like travelling back to the 30s. Very old and not particularly stylish brown furniture. A man ,looking like Jeeves introduced himself. We asked if dinner was available but he apologised and said he was the only person in the hotel. I asked if he had a bar and and he showed me into a very cold dark room where the drinks available were a very poor selection. We went up to the room which was large but feel cosy. The view over the lake was fantastic. We tested the beds and looked at eachother and agreed to leave. We met the member of staff downstairs and I basically stated my case about leaving. The best way to describe it to him was that he had a vintage Rolls Royce without an engine and on that we left.

The hotel, staff and food exceeded our expectations.

The hotel, staff and food exceeded our expectations. Real ale was well kept and a bonus. The highlight of the afternoons were the RAF jets flying up the valley at tree top hight. People would wait for their arrival.

    The scenery is stunning!

The scenery is stunning! Shame about the closeness of the road to our bedroom window! A cooked breakfast would be an improvement! The room was tiny! I did have another 3 days booked for the end of September but cancelled after our stay! Find somewhere different to eat other than The Kings Head which isn’t as good as they make out!

Gateway to both the Northern and Southern lakes.

Gateway to both the Northern and Southern lakes. A lot of good restaurants in the general area, but book early if in a large group . Hoards of people so visit important places early e.g. Castlerigg stone circle is MUCH better if you're the only group there. You can feel its 4500 years age. Book steam ferries before you go otherwise availability might be low. Ask prices at tea rooms before buying. We paid £33 for seven teas/coffees.

Thirlmere is out in the country, not in the rush of the general tourist population. It is easy to reach Keswick and Ambleside and delightful to come back to the peace. The King's Head just down the road produces good food. The countryside is majestic and inviting.

The location is great. Close to the town of Keswick and with plenty of scenic walking routes close by. The hotel itself was clean and comfortable with everything you might need. You could also feel the history of the place, it was very cosy especially after a day on the fells returning to a roaring fire. The staff were friendly and more than happy to accommodate any requests we had. The breakfast was amazing as was the dinner service. We also had a Sunday lunch which again was very good. We will be back!

The whole property was homey, just what we wanted for a relaxing stay away from the city. We loved the full English breakfast served by the house owner herself. We felt very welcomed by Jean. The home has a very traditional British and homey feel to it. The location is a perfect retreat as it is located at a scenic, accessible and quiet location. It’s in between Keswick and Ambleside. Plus the thirlmere infinity pool and waterfall is just a hike away which can actually be seen from our bedroom window.

A lovely overnight stay in this cozy farmhouse close to Thirlmere at the foot of the Dodds. The landlady was friendly and welcoming and my room was very comfortable and had everything I needed. I particularly liked the fresh milk in the fridge and the Thelwell loo seat 😆 The tasty full English breakfast in a traditional dining room setting was perfect for setting me up for the day. Just a 10 minute walk to the nearby pub and then on a little further to Thirlmere itself.

Nestled in the foothills of Helvelyn, by Thirlmere Lake and near Keswick, this little gem has everything you need, including good Wi-Fi. Nothing is too much trouble for Jean who has much knowledge of sheep farming, dry stone walling, and meadows. Her family have been farming in the area for generations. The room is peaceful and quiet and backs onto a waterfall and hills full of healthy looking herdwicks. Lovely breakfast experience too. Would highly recommend. :)

The location is in the middle of two towns, so literally on the highway. But it has great views. Both towns Keswick and Ambelside are a 20 mins drive. So it's important to have a car if you plan to stay here. Food is good, though the menu is limited. The outside seating has great views. There are treks nearby the hotel, though I couldn't do any, but the trail started just behind the hotel.

it was very nice and quiet, the bunks were Cozy, the manager of the property was very kind and put on the fire for me before she left. The barn is also easily accessible via bus, which makes the lakes and scenic hiking routes easily accessible as well.
