Amazing staff, so warm and welcoming, and nothing was too much trouble for them. Hotel is very unique in character and you can feel the history here. Beds were very comfortable, room was light, airy, and spacious. Meals were delicious with excellent vegetarian options.

Beautiful house, very comfortable and well equipped. Comfortable beds and spotlessly clean. We enjoyed the log burner and took advantage of the washing machine and dryer, as the weather had not been kind to us!

A beautifully decorated and furnished house. Extremely comfortable in all rooms. Location in terms of access, views and routes to sites of interest was brilliant. The kitchen/dining room was very well equipped and enabled us to prepare a variety of meals easily. There is a brilliant sitting area in a bay window which gives views across fields towards the bay and beach. The same view is seen from the dining area and two of the three bedrooms (the third has an interesting view towards a steep, craggy hill).
It is a short walk to a brilliant sandy beach with a large shallow bay. One route is steep and needs some care, the other slightly longer (20 minutes) is a gentle grassy slope that gives access to the same beach around low tide. It is easier to return on the steep route.
Coldbackie is a small hamlet (7 houses) and has no facilities other than a telephone box. Out of season there are few eating out options and shopping is best done in Thurso (1 hour by car)

Tongue is set in one of the most beautiful landscapes in Scotland. There are lovely views of Ben Loyal and of the sandbars of the Kyle of Tongue. There's a great 40 minute walk up to Castle Varrich which has fabulous views.

Having driven by car west coast section of Route 500 in a day, was beautiful but tiring , to stay over in Tongue(hotel) is a perfect base to complete north coast via Thurso and John o Groats and East coast sections. Then on home journey, followed middle section road A836 to Lairg and beyond.
Hotel in Tongue offers easy access to all routes (North coast, East and South )and with good road conditions in summer. Petrol and small store available.

Make sure you do the walk from the main road, down to the river, cross it and climb to Varrich Castle ruins. Good exercise after a day in the car and the most wonderful views. Dinner and breakfast at the Ben Loyal was really good.
The locals in the bar were so friendly. Many thanks to Fergus and Findlay!

If your planning to drive the Scotland 500 I would make a quick stop in Tongue to climb the hill to the castle. It's a relatively short walk up a track next to the Ben Loyal Hotel. All depending on how long your drive has been during the day you could overnight here. I would continue on to Thurso if you have the time.

If your looking for scenery or photography opportunities this place is amazing. The road into Tongue is a little harrowing but of course that is no fault of the hotel.
A lovely little village to visit
We loved everything about this hotel! From the absolutely stunning location, conveniently located for some great hikes, to the above and beyond friendliness of the staff (special shoutout to Mike!), to cozy and atmospheric rooms, incl. great bathrooms and a little welcome sherry. We stayed at 5 different properties in various parts of the Highlands and this was our favorite and a true gem.
The hotel has been decorated beautifully and has a warm and welcoming feel.
The staff were always very helpful and polite.
Very comfortable beds and pillows with block out curtains, so necessary in the summer months.
Dinner was delicious. We would highly recommend the Cullen skink soup.
Room was so comfy and charming - really loved the complimentary sherry and tartan throw. The restaurant served great food, and the front desk/ service staff in dining room were all so warm and friendly. The hotel is also well situated, stones throw from Castle Varrich footpath.
The cottage (Kildinguie) was clean, tidy, and well appointed. The location was exceptional with views of the Kyle of Tongue and wiithin walking distance of good pub and hotel, both serving good food. Kildinguie was readonably priced and we happily stay there again.
Really liked this hotel. Very authentic and in a lovely location. Arrived and felt really welcome. Had a lovely evening in the restaurant and bar. Room was really nice and cozy. Great views from our room. Overall we really liked this hotel
Very comfortable with everything we needed. although weather could have been better. Able to dry waterproofs easily! Handy for local hotels and could do some walking from the door.
The hotel is lovely and staff are really nice, the manager actually collected us as we had a breakdown with our car... very good of her. The food was amazing. Will deffo be back.
Super location. Great views over towards varrich Castle and the tongue causeway. Quiet and peaceful. The house is immaculate. Would visit here again. Oh And it's dog friendly!
It is set in an outstanding location. My room had a view of Ben Hope and Castle Varrich. The hotel restaurant served high quality food and there was also a bar.
Large, beautifully decorated twin room overlooking mountains and the loch. The food in the restaurant was very good. It is an extremely comfortable hotel.
