Elmbank Hotel And Lodge - part of The Cairn Collection 3 stars

Hotel in York

Located in the Mickelgate Ward of York overlooking York Racecourse and the Knavesmire Strays lies The Elmbank Hotel, a historical 19th-century townhouse that has been elegantly restored to offer a... The hotel is an hidden gem only 15 minutes walk from the centre of York. The interiors are unbelievable. The hall, the bar and the dining room with the allure of an old and magnificent Manor and the rooms with a quirky yet modern design. The room was clean and of the right size for a one night stay (would have easily have stayed there a couple of nights tho) and it had everything you could ask for. I highly recommend having breakfast in their dining room as it's one of the best breakfasts I've ever had on UK soil. The hot breakfast choices (from full English to avocado on toast) are beautifully cooked and the buffet provided you with everything you may want for your continental breakfast including a selection of lovely pastries, cereals and yoghurts and several choices of juices. Mark, one of our waiters in the brekkie room, was an absolute sweetheart and after my other half commented that the hash browns were so good he could have had one more, he went out of his way to make sure another one arrived at our table before we left to check out. Outstanding service through and through and we would definitely be back here on our next visit to York!

Hilton York 4 stars

Hotel in York City Centre, York

In the heart of historic York, this Hilton has 2 bars, 2 restaurants and is located opposite the ancient Clifford's Tower. Room was clean with welcoming snacks and towel animals. Bed was comfortable as well as pillows and quilt. Reception updated our room with direct view to the Clifford Tower was sweet. A modern Sport center was there to give some time exercising. Restaurant was large too. I actually preferred shower curtain instead of half covered glass partition in the bath room. Came with variety of teas and snack is good hospitality

Principal York 4 stars

Hotel in York

The 5-star Principal York, formerly The Royal York Hotel, is set in quiet gardens, with views into the new Garden Room overlooking York Minster. The location and proximity to the train station was outstanding. Walking to Yorkminster and the Shambles was only about 10 minutes. This property is outstanding, I would highly recommend it to anyone whether traveling with friends or family.

FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.
