The drive over through the mountains (if you decide not to take the toll road via Akureyri) is already a treat before you arrive at a unique location in a natural park located in the northern part of Iceland. Our bedroom had an en suite bathroom, and was clean. Waking up to see a fresh (thin) layer of snow covered the outside area was a big bonus. The common space has enough room to not bump into the occupants of the other rooms, and the kitchen is well stocked.
Situated in Myvatn and only 6.5 km from Myvatn Nature Baths, Slow Travel Mývatn - Þúfa - Private Homestay features accommodation with lake views, free WiFi and free private parking.

Lovely location with a view across to a volcano. Very comfortable apartment that was perfect for us travelling with adult children. Hosts were friendly and helpful.
Fly to Akureyri Airport from Reykjavik (45-minute flight), then drive to Myvatn (90km, about 1 hour). International travellers can fly to Keflavik Airport, transfer to Reykjavik (50km, about 45 minutes), then follow the domestic route.
The most convenient airport for both domestic and international travellers is Akureyri Airport, due to its proximity and regular flights. It's approximately 100km from Myvatn, a journey of around 1 hour and 15 minutes by car.
Myvatn, Iceland, lacks public transport. The best options are hiring a car or cycling. Car rental services are available in nearby Akureyri and Reykjahlíð. Cycling is feasible during summer months, with bike rentals available locally. Walking is also an option, but distances between attractions can be considerable. Always check local weather conditions before setting out.
Reykjahlíð is the best area to stay in Mývatn, Iceland. It's conveniently located near the lake, natural baths, and volcanic features. It offers a variety of accommodations, dining options, and is a hub for local tours.
Myvatn, Iceland experiences a subarctic climate with cold, snowy winters and cool, short summers. Average temperatures range from -10°C in winter (December to February) to 12°C in summer (June to August). There's no distinct dry or wet season, but precipitation is relatively low, with the wettest month being October. The region is not prone to monsoons or hurricanes.

It's a beautiful lava field and lake system. Old volcanos and lava flows. Dimmuborgir is a legendary place where the Yule Lads sleep through the summer. Bear in mind that the summer can have hatches of midges.
Krafla Power Station, active geothermal mud pools, Mývatn Nature Baths.
If you travel in the winter it's a great place to see the Aurora as practically no light pollution.
Obviously it's not as nice as Akureyri, but I would say that as I live there

Myvatn Lake certainly has beautiful scenery and the weather is typically warmer than the coast. For the full service/hotel travelers I would recommend Fosshotel. For campers there is plenty of accommodations.

So much to see and do in this area!
So much to see and do in this area! Thankfully we were up and out just after nine! We packed in so much! Lots to see down the eastern side of the lake. Each activity offered us something different and unusual that we hadn’t experienced before. The thermal baths there, although smaller than the Blue Lagoon, are much cheaper and actually offer senior rates. Two pools, one warmer than the other and one sort of large hot tub area. Well worth the money! The cakes in the restaurant there and the coffee were some of the best we’ve had and are reasonably priced. They also have larger meals and soups on offer.

Myvatn is a beautiful lake, and the surroundings have plenty to offer to visit and for hiking. It has a great variety of scenic points and shorter and longer walks. At Skutustadir is a nice information centre that also a small exhibition explaining the origin of the circle of craters over there.

Although it was a long drive from the west of Iceland, it was well worth it. There are so many hidden gems: 2 grottos, a fissure off the beaten path, a nature bath that rivals blue lagoon, and so much more. It's also not crowded due to the location. Well worth the drive!
Comfortable, well equipped lodge with 4 guest rooms and communal kitchen, dining, living area. Host helpful and provides good range of food to make your own breakfast. Very nice, well equipped kitchen, including washer / dryer which was very useful, and well used by guests whilst we were there. Good location not far from main road and very close to Lake Myvatn and its attractions. Supermarket not far away in Reykjahlio where there is also very good fish and chip take away.
we had rooms 22 and 23 and they were so comfortable. Beds were comfortable, nice amenities and really liked having the shower with sink and another room for toilet and sink. The setting is perfect and loved convenience for sights around Myvatn. if you stay here, you are guaranteed a reservation at the excellent restaurant which was helpful as so busy. Enjoyed eating watching the cows and the view of the lake.
We stayed in a two bedroom cottage and it was absolutely perfect to explore the Myvatn Lake area. The place is well equipped and quite spacious.
Be sure not to miss the breakfast if you are staying there - they have a small buffet of local/homemade products and it was delicious. Would stay there again only for the breakfast ! They also sell some of their farm products on site which was great.
The campground hosts were very helpful in providing information. The huts are close to a supermarket/gas station and Myvatn lake seems like a vacation spot for the locals. I really liked having a porch to sit on at the end of the day. We used the kitchen of the hostel down the road. The campground bathrooms and showers were kept clean and were walking distance from the huts.
We really enjoyed our stay in the hut as it was warm and comfortable. The location not far from lake Myvatn is great and the staff very friendly and helpful. Check-in at the campsite was very easy (with this wind, we were very happy not having to stay in a tent...)
Best of all of course was the breakfast - it was excellent and even had lava bread!
We did a tour around Iceland and we stayed one night at Aska Modern Cabin. The cabin is situated in a perfect location near Myvatn lake. The reception is nearby and the crew is helpful and friendly. The cabin has all the facilities you need, even a small kitchen if you want do do your own cooking. And we could park the car really nearby.
Central location at lake Myvatn. Proper rooms with bath and comfortable bed. We were here in August, so there were thousands of flies and mosquitos which dont bite, so its just a little bit stressful when they invade your head. :) Nothing to do with the guesthouse, just consider this at that time of the year.
This was a great place to stay while we explored the area around Lake Myvtan. It was clean and had amazing views! Our room was spacious and the heated towel bar was a nice addition - helped us dry out our gear from the nature baths. Our first stay at a FossHotel - very impressed!
This hotel is convenient to exploring the whole Myvatn area. Rooms are clean and comfortable, if a bit dated. The included breakfast was pretty good with lots of options (including make your own waffles), and the on-site restaurant was a good place to grab dinner.
We enjoyed staying at this hotel. The room was beautiful, clean and large. Best shower during our entire holiday. The people were very friendly and the breakfast was delicious. The surroundings are also beautiful. Definitely recommended to stay for a night.
The location is very good, close to the lake. The owner of the property is a very nice person. had a nice and informative talk after dinner. This hotel is more a family house with a pleasant atmosphere.
This was one of the best hotels we stayed in Iceland. It had the northern lights wake up call, which we sadly didn’t get because of no northern lights that night. But the hot tub and sauna was amazing
This is a luxury hotel. The location is out on a point all by itself. It has a postcard view from all sides. The restaurant is some of the best fine dining I have had.
