Assisi is world famous for the 2 saints – Francis and Clare – who were born here and subsequently founded Christian poverty movements. The tomb of the former is in the Basilica of St Francis, majestically located on a hill surveying the Umbrian countryside. Its graceful lines and powerful frescoes defy its 13th-century construction.
The Basilica of St Clare is from the same period and displays remains of the saint who inspired the Poor Clares. Between the 2 basilicas is the New Church, positioned where St Francis supposedly once lived, and the Cathedral of St Rufinus, dedicated to the saint who converted Assisi to Christianity.
Considerably older are the Roman villa remains near main Piazza del Comune, whose historic buildings house shops and pavements cafes on the site of the former forum. The columns of the Church of St Mary over Minerva were the entrance to a Roman temple.
Roman castle remains sit in the hills above Assisi, as does the more intact, medieval Rocca Maggiore which offers magnificent views over the town. Even higher is the Eremo delle Carceri, a stone hermitage where St Francis apparently preached to birds.
The cobbled streets ascending Assisi’s hills contain most of Booking.com’s accommodation options, including luxury hotels, cheap apartments and B&Bs near Santa Maria degli Angeli train station.
The quintessential Italian village experience! Yes, it is popular with tourists… but so is Rom and so is most of Italy. The nice things about Assisi is it has many restaurants and historical and religious and scenic sites to enjoy, and when the day trippers go home in the afternoon, you have the opportunity to enjoy the magic of a quiet authentic Italian village in the evenings and mornings before and after the crowds have left. It’s a truly wonderful experience that should not be missed.

Assisi is part of the history of not only Italy, but also of Christian Europe. Suffice it to say that Francis of Assisi, the holy monk, founder of the mendicant order named after him - the Franciscan Order - lived, served and was buried here.
The city has many architectural monuments: Municipal Square, Basilica of St. Francis, Cathedral of St. Rufino, Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, etc. The medieval narrow streets leave a fabulous impression. Excellent cuisine, local quality wines and most importantly, very helpful city residents

I loved Assisi.
I loved Assisi. A very attractive town (the old part) with clean and neat streets and houses. The Cathedral of St Francis is magnificent--a must see place. The main attractions are all within walking distance of each other. A great choice of restaurants.

We drove and it was uphill all the way on narrow roads. We had to dodge pedestrians on some of the roads. Basillica was worth seeing and if you had lodging at the top then it was an easy walk to the basillica. One night is all you need to see Assisi.

After hectic days of travel through Milan, Venice and Florence our stay in Assisi was balm for the soul. Even with the daytime crowds, wandering through centuries old streets was wonderful. Stopping in the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva we were thrilled to the beauty of the church enhanced by someone practicing the organ. The Basilicas of St. Francis and St. Clare were incredible--having read about these saints made the visits to their churches so meaningful. There is no need for a car as the city unchanged by time is easily walkable. And to top it off, great food! Lovely Assisi!

I went there on Pilgrimage as a Secular Franciscan and could have stayed forever apart from the steep hills and lack of Gluten Free, Vegan food.
You would have to travel quite a distance to find a large enough supermarket but the small local shops all sold fresh fruit and vegetables.
It's best if you can speak Italian as the English is not so good and I was mistaken for Italian a few times and was unable to respond in their language, but I tried.
BE aware that there are very few pavements/footpaths and remember that they drive on the RIGHT. It feels a little strange at first, but you soon get used to it.
Very friendly people and worth the effort to learn the language a little.
I will definitely be going back and would love to able to live there. I didn't want to leave.
The perfect location for exploring Assisi. The hotel staff on arrival where super helpful and friendly, offering advice on how to explore the town and top sites to see.
The room itself was nice, perhaps a little basic/dated compared to other places we've stayed. But the view from our room was amazing! The hotel also very kindly looked after our bags on the day we checked out, so that we could continuing exploring before heading to our next destination and helped book us taxis.
The location was very convenient being just off the Piazza del Commune. The hotel had lovely outdoor common patios and one where you could enjoy the beautiful sunsets. Everyone was very helpful from booking it to helping with recommendations and reservations at good restaurants. I loved that I could open the doors to the patio and close the shutters to get fresh air at night. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Loved Assisi and our stay at Hotel Umbra was perfect.
This family-run 2* hotel is better than many 3* hotels in Italy. The staff and the owners are extremely nice and kind. The breakfast is super for a 2* hotel. There is a parking at 50-100 metres from the hotel.
The family runs also an excellent restaurant in the old town with wonderful panoramic view and delicious food. The restaurant is 15-20 mins climb uphill away from the hotel, though, but the effort is worth. Overall - very pleasant experience.
Incredibly nice and tastefully decorated, very ancient apartment with all the comforts of home. We loved it so much, that instead of staying two days, we stayed a week! Beautiful and energetic couple available for suggestions and help anytime. Our favorite stay in Italy so far!!! Perfect location for quiet (very small street) but also just a moments walk into the beauty and inspiration of Assisi!
Mike was so accommodating and helpful! He made our visit special!
The location is the absolute best The rooms were beautiful, very clean with a modern old world Touch!
Mike (Mikala) made dinner reservations to one of best restaurants I have been in Italy! Thank you
He also got a taxi friend to pick us up very early in am to catch a train!
Couldn’t have been a more perfect time!
Outstanding. The best place we stayed in the whole of Italy - and we toured all round. The host and his wife were welcoming and helpful, the place was spotless and we felt very comfortable there. The breakfast was served with home made cake and plenty of choices. Very generous portions. When we ran into a problem with our motor bikes the host was quick to help us.
Very large bedroom with cozy bed. A very nice swimming pool with a terrace, with a great view to the surrounding hills, where you can enjoy an aperitivo. Optional dinner was among the best food and wine I had in my Italy trip. Staff was super supportive and were happy to facilitate my early check-in, and allowed me to enjoy the facilities before my room was ready.
The Location was perfect for us. The view from the balcony was marvelous. The place very we’ll keep and clean.
The breakfast was wonderful. Choice between savory and sweet. Perfect amount.
But most of all I have to mention the staff. Very friendly and helpful.
Assisi is a wonderful city but the stay at this hotel made everything unforgettable!
The room was comfortable and clean with a beautiful street view. The owner and staff were helpful and friendly. We were offered a take-away breafast on the morning of our early departure. The hotel is a short walk to the Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi and close to a few cafes and shops. I would stay here again.
The whole complex is very nicely done. We were very comfortable in our room. The bathroom is very modern and clean. The bed is nice and comfortable. We had a beautiful view of Assisi on the hill. The breakfast was great. This was the nicest hotel we had while in Italy. I would like to come back some day.
it’s a cozy, small hotel with a lovely boat Massimo who really made us feel welcome and taken care of. It’s right between the two parts of Assisi which is convenient as you can walk both up the hill to St Francis and back into the city and train station.
The rooms were spotless and comfortable. The view from our room was spectacular. This was our second visit to Assisi and Hotel Ideale. This time we booked a room with a balcony and we were not disappointed. The breakfast was more than we could eat.
Everything. Staff (including Lina the border collie) were extremely friendly and helpful. The restaurant served some of the best food we had in 1 month of travelling in Italy. Breathtaking view in the morning
The location is super convenient, especially since we were on foot. The breakfast that was set up for us in the morning was so sweet and one of my favorite things about our trip to Italy.
A really charming hotel with friendly and attentive staff, nice rooms, superb views, within walking distance of the centre of Assisi. The hotel has 3 stars but far exceeds that rating.
Perfect location at the very heart of Assisi. Lovely staff and great breakfast. It is also very quiet and cool. We have stayed in several hotels in Assisi and this is out favourite.
The breakfasts were the absolute best of any in our 2 weeks in various places in Italy. They did our laundry for us. Comfy bed. Nice people. Nice landscaping. Big shower.
