The staff were so welcoming to the resort and it felt like coming home. The breakfast was good and the dinner was just amazing. It was a fine dining multi course dinner each night. Just fabulous. I will highly recommend staying there for a relaxing weekend.

Ten minutes walk uphill to the castle along a beautiful winding road, and similar down to village. However taxis are cheap quick to arrive and easily booked by the hotel reception. The staff are incredible as is the chef, and restaurant staff- the kindest reception and most timely serving of delicious food. The hotel is surrounded by lovely Japanese gardens with an amazing view to the town and across the valley. A real escape into the Japanese countryside. We also loved our room - it was huge, remarkably clean with large comfortable beds, fabulous bath and we were provided with gorgeous toiletries and all the essentials. We wished we had booked for much longer, given the work the staff out in to prepare rooms.

Absolutely charming and peaceful place. It was our last night in Japan and it was the perfect ending.

This homestay is in a fabulous location, right on the beautiful river and just a very short walk to the main part of town (and the best coffee we had in Japan!). The house has been renovated throughout and is spacious and very comfortable. Our upstairs area had two tatami bedrooms and two sitting rooms, which was a fantastic amount of space for our family. Only one section (and one bedroom) we were able to lock which didn't bother us but is worth mentioning. The downstairs areas (bathroom, kitchen, laundry etc) are shared with the host who was obviously very considerate of our privacy and space. Parking was free and directly outside the house, which was an additional bonus.
The beds were comfortable and we slept well with the sounds of the river. Gujo Hachiman is an absolutely wonderful, charming town and the highlight of our trip. Highly recommend this as a place to visit!

I'd go there again in the summer and swim in the river.

This is a skiing region, yet there are plenty of possibilities in other seasons as well. Excellent Onsen, great hiking opportunities, and most probably mountain biking is an option as well. There is for sure a huge golf course.
Limited public transport almost exclusively in Japanese, own or rental car thus advised. Excellent food available in the limited number of bars and restaurants this place offers.
