I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Azumino guest house and would recommend to anyone looking for a quiet, relaxed retreat in the countryside. The family were helpful and generous: helping me plan my route to Kamikochi, offering a lift to the station in the early morning and providing a bike for me to go to the shop. The breakfast was superb! The bed was comfortable and the shower/ bath and toilet facilities were clean and accessible. The walk from the train station is doable, but the road is not well lit so avoid doing it in the dark.

Nicely located, very quiet ryokan next to a Buddhist temple. While it doesn't privde the highest standard, it has al the amenities you may need, an onsen, good food, comfy futon and nice tatami flooring. Most importantly, it's very peaceful and quiet, and provides a good base for trips around the mountains.
A word of advice, a car is a must-have.
