It was one of the best hotel experiences that I have ever had!
[hospitality and service]
From the moment we parked into hotel, we have been warmly greeted and welcomed. It was smooth from the beginning, check in, welcome drink and orientation. Everything is well organized and considerate. It was really lovely that hotel staff even prepared menu in Chinese for dinner! Kudos to authentic Japanese omotenashi!
[facility and room]
Our room or villa was renovated from a hundred year old traditional Japanese Kura, where you got to experience the traditional Japanese culture and also enjoy the modern and luxury side as a high end hotel! We had a very secluded hot spring in our backyard, which definitely was the highlight of our stay! Champaign and hot springs!!
[food]
I know many of the tourists are expecting traditional Japanese cuisine but our Italian fusion dining experience was just superb! It was a high end Italian full course but with Japanese fusion, such as the concept of “Shun” which means to use most seasonal ingredients and all of the vege and meat were harvested locally in nearby area. Hats off to the chef!! I would definitely come back for the food!!

Breakfast by the river and the private baths were lovely
On average, 3-star hotels in Izu cost £186 per night, and 4-star hotels in Izu are £208 per night. If you're looking for something really special, a 5-star hotel in Izu can on average be found for £266 per night (based on Booking.com prices).
There is a more to explore here than we realized. Apart from hiking up hills for great views, we did not budget enough time for more sight-seeing. We had wanted to visit a wasabi farm but wound up at a wasabi market which was really cool with lots of wasabi based products - that was an experience in itself. Probably best explored by car.

It was a lovely small town, a welcome change from busy cities crowded with tourists. Very relaxing, beautiful hot springs in the middle of town, a charming temple and shrine surrounded by huge cedar trees. We stayed twi nights and really enjoyed it. From Shuzenji station you can take bus to a viewing area where if the weather conditions are right you can view Mt Fuji.

A car or bike is really essential to get around, and see the the sights, as buses may only run a few times each day.
Doi Gold Mine is an excellent working museum, lots to see and touch, even handle the pure gold ingots weighing 12.5kg. You can even do some gold panning. 400 metres of caves have been prepared as an example of the old hand-dug mines, 30 cm per day.
Mihama beach is great for families, sheltered, with good facilities, and the nearby Heda museum documenting Japan-Russian relations.
Lots of small coastal towns, with some places to stay, though many restaurants close early, and there are very few convenience stores, meaning you need to stock up and plan your trip and meals.
Food is mainly sea food, izakayas, the odd Italian and Chinese restaurant, and some tea/ coffee shops. Not really a culinary hot spot. Beach restaurants serve ramen, hot dogs, yakisoba, and other fast foods.
Quite a few abandoned places, relics of the bubble era.

public transport is very difficult, expensive and quite rare, make sure to check timetables (all in japanese by the way) because you can end up waiting hours for the next bus. But very beautiful and many many things to see so leave a lot of time and maybe rent a car if you can

The seafood is fantastic.

Good parts:
The seafood is fantastic.
Bad parts:
The Toi sakura is a little disappointing for the volume is far from enough. And the traffic is not so convenient considering most buses only come once an hour.
Staying at Arai Ryokan was like traveling back in time to a place where you can experience the true meaning of "omotenashi" (traditional Japanese hospitality). The service was absolutely outstanding and dinner and breakfast (served in our room) was just amazing and made with fresh ingredients from the local area. Our room faced the river and we enjoyed a foot onsen on our balcony while taking in the view. We also enjoyed trying the various onsen baths available in the ryokan complex. We are very much looking forward to staying again.
I booked this ryokan to celebrate my partner's 30th birthday. This is the first time we have stayed at a ryokan, and the stay has exceeded our expectations!
The ryokan itself is a national cultural asset, indeed the interior is absolutely stunning, with lots of nature and a pond where you can feed the koi.
Our room was Japanese style with a river view, the view is impressive. The onsens inside the ryokan are very comforting, as well as the kaiseki dinner and the hearty breakfast.
Staff was very friendly and helpful.
The included breakfasts and dinner were delicious. Our first breakfast, and both evening meals, were served to our table. Our second breakfast, on a Saturday, was buffet-style, with Japanese and European options available. Our room was spacious and very comfortable. We each took two Onsen baths - the facilities were spacious, relaxing, and with lovely body wash and shampoo.
The hotel is very well located to town attractions, and is a very short walk from a bus stop, which connects to the train station.
The owner of the hotel was very welcoming, even though she didn't speak English. The guests were mostly Japanese, and as guests from China, we received special attention from them. The meals they serve are nice. The boss found out that my child could not eat raw fish, so she offered to cook it for her. The hotel's hot springs are also very clean. There is a bus stop near the hotel and it is easy to get around. There were many small crabs in the surrounding fields, which made the child very happy.
Amazing facilities, spotlessly clean. The Onsen and bathing facilities were top class. The buffet breakfast and dinner were extensive and delicious. Some of the friendliest and most welcoming staff I've ever come across. They made the whole experience of staying at the hotel and absolute joy. I would highly recommend this establishment to any travellers. The facilities of the hotel are so great, I would give it five stars.
The location of the hotel was superb, offering a picturesque view of Mount Fuji that enhanced my stay significantly. I was delighted by the cleanliness and overall comfort of the room, which provided a pleasant retreat after a day of sightseeing. Overall, the combination of the stunning view and well-maintained accommodations made for a memorable experience.
The staffs where professioned, and the room was superb!! No words can describe, the onsen and bed was so so comfortable. The location of this place might be too convenient but as a place for leisure, me and my friend were happy that this place wasn’t too commercialized. Highly recommend:):):)
We loved everything about the hotel. The in-room private hot spring tub on the balcony was top. The onsen, spacious and with seaview, is one of the best we have had. The highlight was definitely the kaiseki dinner in our private dining area! We highly recommend this property.
Not the first time for us to stay here. Amazing place in the middle of the forest, just as the name suggests. Great cottages with all the amenities. Excellent hot spring. Can use the facilities of the nearby Mariott Hotel.
We were the only booking on Sunday night. We had the whole ryokan to ourselves, and the staff were so friendly and even took the time to talk to us. Highly recommend! The food was great, and the onsen was fabulous.
Exceptional service. Ryokan is located in beautiful area. Breakfast (delicious) was served in a part of facility located right above river - it was a deloghtful experience. Defilitely will come back.
Onsen in the room was great. Bathroom/shower very nice. Beds comfortable. Room was BIG for Japan. Excellent location if you have a car to drive the peninsula.
