Staff were pleasant.
So so rooms. Not a terrible location as it's not a vast town, but quite a distance from the station and their own shuttle bus doesn't run until 9.30, the local buses don't start until 10.

While Nagano is best known outside Japan as a Winter...
While Nagano is best known outside Japan as a Winter Olympics host city and a favourite place for people to ski in Winter, it is also the site of the Zenkō-ji Temple.
As one of the most important Buddhist sites in Japan it is extensive and beautifully landscaped. Despite the large number of visitors we felt calmed each of the times we walked through the grounds. You can also purchase a ticket (¥1,200) to climb the Niōmon Gate, visit the main Hondo and walk through the dark tunnel, turn the giant storehouse that contains a complete set of sutras, and see the museum in the war memorial pagoda at the rear of the complex.
Nagano itself is a nice prefectural capital surrounded by forested mountains. In the good late autumn weather it was beautiful and we enjoyed wandering the small streets finding little restaurants and stores, and looking at the interesting mix of old and very new architecture.
We didn't visit any of the popular museums and galleries as after almost 4 weeks in Japan we were "museumed out", but did stumble across the Nishinomon-Yoshinoya Sake Brewery which is well worth a visit, and had lunch at Unaginoyado Sumiyoshi - a well-regarded unagi restaurant.
There are also lots of scenic and nature locations to visit in the surrounding hills, but you need more time than we had to enjoy them.
Overall, Nagano was a bit of a surprise package and being just 1½ hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen I would recommend a visit as part of any Japan itinerary.

Handly location to use as a base for surrounding areas like Matsumoto and Obuse. Just be aware the train to Obuse is not on the JR or the IC/Suica/Pasmo and you'd need cash to buy the ticket.

Many different activities available in the area - cultural, historical, and natural. The Togakushi Shrine Pilgrimage and Kamikochi National Park were my favorites. Excellent souvenir shopping on the street in front of Zenkoji Temple. The city is very walkable. The train from Tokyo provides easy access. During hot summer months it is cooler in Nagano.
Its proximity to the Nagano train station and food places.
Although reception was on Level 5, there was no inconvenience accessing that level and subsequently our rooms. Signboard of the hotel is huge and high up so it is easy to spot it from far so that we can return to our hotel easily.
We booked single rooms for each of us at a reasonable price. Bed was bigger than single size and was comfy. Thankfully there was enough space for our luggage.
The Jizokan Matsuya Ryokan was very traditional and a great experience of old Japanese ways. The owners were extremely hospitable and breakfast was outstanding. Traditional Japanese breakfast. It was within 100m of the Temple and 26 min walk to or from the station. Busses to the station are easily accessible (10mins down the hill)just outside the Temple grounds. A very unique experience for my son and I.
Fantastic location, close to Nagano Station and shopping areas. A pleasant walk to Zenkoji temple. Quite a large room for Japanese standards, suitable size for a family of 4. Well appointed, full kitchen, decent sized fridge, microwave etc. Great shower and water pressure. A very quiet room with minimal road noise heard. A quiet complex of 5 apartments only.. Netflix provided.
This is the best imaginable place to stay in Nagano. Perfectly located between the train station and the famous Zenkoji. Japanese style rooms in a authentic hotel, with a common hot bath. Travelling as a family with a 1-year-old, we were very happy that the charming owners gave us one of the baths for family use. Next time we will eat dinner there, too!
Location is the highlight. It’s right opposite the train station.
The breakfast buffet was interesting with a food map. Good variety of local specialties.
There’s a small library at the Hotel Lobby with design and architecture and some history books.
They are also conscious about reusing recycled waste with the green coins program.
The hotel is very well located in the centre of Nagano city, 3 minutes from the main station and close access to most of the location to visit. The staff is nice and polite, and the hotel itself is quite clean. Even if the room is a little small, it's practical, clean for an affordable price. The bed were quite comfortable.
What is there not to like? You’re right next to the temple, the alley it’s on is bussin’ and on top of that the aesthetics are top notch Japan-vibes. On top of all that it was insanely clean, up to date, and while providing quality comfort in modern form still preserves it’s “ryokan-ness” that we all love.
A one-of-a-kind Ryokan with kind owners and in a great location. Lots of wonderful restaurants nearby. Bus stop for Nagano Station is near the entrance. Hangout in the lobby or sit on the sidewalk bench in front of the building to experience the culture of the Zenkoji pilgrams and Nagano's city life.
A hop skip and a jump from Nagano station, it's a lovely hotel with generously sized rooms and a big in-room bath.
Really central to Nagano, it's easy to get to Don Quixote, restaurants and other shops and bars.
For a 'transition to / between the ski resorts' it's a great place to rest your head.
The staff were super helpful and friendly and the hotel was extremely close to the train station where you could access everything you needed. The beds were very comfortable and had a decent sized bathroom with a bath that was great after being in the snow all day.
We have always stay at the Dormy Inn branches whenever we visited Japan. Its location is usually within a 8 minutes walk from the train station.
The Dormy Inn Nagano is about a 5 minutes walk across from the Nagano Station with many eateries around the area.
The location is very close to Nagano Station. The hotel's utilities are so modern. Check in and check out is by machine, so it's very convenient. Checking out time is not so early. The room is very comfy. Also the amenities are. They even provided bath salt.
The bed was very comfortable, overall is okay for me. The cleanliness was okay to. The bathroom was small, but still okay for me. The most important thing that this was the cheapest but really worth hotel near (around 2km) Nagano station.
just minutes walk from Nagano train station. Lots of food options nearby and shopping. Onsen was great and rooms we exceptional. Note: no tattoos allowed in this onsen. Bonus, the hotel water is alkalized! highly recommend.
Ideal layover Hotel for Nagano. Has restaurants and convenient stores around and is a short walk away from Nagano station. They also include a token for vending machines, which means free tea/water/juice.
The hotel is close to Nagano station, about 5 minutes walk. The room was spacious and comfortable, the staff very friendly, and the breakfast(Japanese style with some western dishes) simply amazing.
Right beside Nagano station, super convenient, with lots of food nearby and a Donki right opposite. Big hotel with lots of amenities, very comfortable and totally enjoyed my stay.
