The in room open air bath and beautiful sea view. Bed was firm and comfortable but pillows are bad, providing virtually no support at all. It felt like resting your head on the mattress.

Stayed here for 4 nights at the beginning of our trip around Japan.
We didn't have many interactions with staff other than the housekeeping staff. They were lovely to deal with. The rooms we chose not have cleaned every day. Instead, we would put our dirty towels, etc. In a bag outside our room and we would return in the afternoon to fresh clean towels.
The size of the room was good. We had almost more room that we could use.
Location: It was not on the main street in Otaru, ocer a few instead. That was perfect for us. We realised there was a covered walkway/ shopping street that was very convenient to keep out of the weather.
The shower had really good water pressure!
Having spare blankets within easy access was really good.

I really liked Otaru, even though it is small and doesn’t have too much to see. It’s really just the main shopping strip and the canal. There are a few museums and some spots in the mountains (there seems to be a ropeway that is poorly advertised but would have been perfect) but that’s about it.
It’s really quite a charming place. The streetscape and history are both fascinating, and the food great - especially ankake yakisoba and kaisendon. I do think it would be an absolutely perfect place to end a trip and unwind for a few days before returning to reality.

A lovely old port town with many original buildings being repurposed for tourism - dining and glass making.
Compact size makes walking around easy but in winter could be snow bound.
Lots of great places to explore old Japanese culture and dining and drinking experiences.
Lots of fresh seafood...many diners around the actual fish market shop with all types of Japanese cuisine... tempura...sakitori...sushi..shashimi...hotpot ...ramen etc..and absolutely amazing bakeries / patisseries and local ice cream and dairy products. Even wineries have opened up.
And even more if you are a winter sports person with ski resorts on the town outskirts...seaon just closed when we were here.
All this a simple train ride from Sapporo Airport -- ok maybe an 2 hour ride...not bad if straight off the plane from Sydney or Seoul or Tokyo into the Sapporo airport.

After coming from the big city of Sapporo we loved the smaller town of Otaru. Planned on just doing a day trip but changed to stay overnight. Wish we had taken a day off Sapporo and added it to Otaru. No lights on the canal as expected but we still loved Otaru. Easy to walk to everything and a lot to enjoy.

We went during winter.
We went during winter. It is a small quiet town and most shops close around 5-6pm. So good to settle dinner early. As a small and quiet town, the place is generally quiet and peaceful after dusk. There is nothing to do after dusk and travelers can take a stroll down the Otaru canal and enjoy the night view.

Give the canal a pass, especially if you have been to Europe. Very underwhelming. Take the local train one stop to Shioya and hike the Shioya Maru-yama. It is about a 6km round trip hike up a local mountain with great views. Take the same train to Yoichi to tour the Nikka Whiskey Distillery and sample great whiskeys in the restaurant after the tour (book reservation for tour ahead of time and remember everything shuts down around 16:00).

The hotel: Great location, staff service facilities and everything you need to support your comfortable stay, a little cosy but expected in the country.
The town is lovely and has now become my most favourite town in Japan, want to be here more, it give me relax, local people are also very nice.
Oh my goodness this place was a dream. The staff were incredible, the food was superb and the VIEW. I was literally almost moved to tears watching the sunrise over the ocean in the open air bath. Yes, the decor is a little dated but you get a taste of luxury for half the price you would somewhere else, so I certainly didn't mind. It has a sort of old world charm a la Grand Budapest Hotel I actually quite liked. Not to mention Otaru is a beautiful town. The two days I spent here would have made the trip to Japan worth it on their own.
The family room had bunk beds for our kids, which they loved! It was spacious, clean, and comfortable for our family of four. Staff was friendly and helped us with parking and accessing amenities like the baths and breakfast. The baths were convenient and clean; pajamas were included so we could be comfortable walking around the hotel. The breakfast was delicious; my kids enjoyed everything and I appreciated the variety of foods to try. The location was easy walking distance from all major attractions in Otaru.
It's a lovely old hotel in a great location. We walked with our suitcases from the train station which was downhill, a little tricky in the snow, but manageable, about 15-20 minute walk. We chose to book a taxi back to the station because it was uphill - about $8 AUD, so worth it! The room was large, but everything is a bit tired. Great view out over the canal, and also great view at breakfast. Will loved Otaru, but very touristy!
We stayed here for 2 nights in November 2023. Well located hotel and walking distances to Otaru restaurants, just opposite the convenient stores Lawson, walk about 10 mins to attraction points Otaru Canal and shopping street.. Rooms are clean and big enought. Staffs are very polite and professional, onsite parking is convenient.
The location was down the street from the train station, which made it so convenient. We wanted to see the Lantern Festival that was right across the street from the hotel.
Not to mention the breakfast buffet that we totally enjoyed. If I ever stay in Otaru again, I would definitely stay there again.
For a wanderer, it was a really nice place that had all I needed. The shower rooms and toilet were complete with everything, and were very clean. The receptionist and helper were very nice even tho I came so late and had a lot of needs. It’s really near the Otaru station and the Otaru canal, too!
Usually I dont do a review but was touched that the hotel refund me for my first night since we missed out the flight. We are glad with the arrangement. We love the stay here, everything is self service and auto check in and the place is clean, near to the city but quiet and new. thank you
- Location! This place is the best at the heart of Otaru attraction street.
- The house is spacious with complete facilities. Big bathroom with bath tub. Very convenient and comfortable to stay.
- Parking is convenient.
- We will definitely stay here again every time we come to Otaru.
Location we are fine. Walking distance from Otaru Chikko Station. Walk through the mall to reach hotel.
Visited the nearby places like music box museum, otaru canal and shopping street. We are fine as we are walker and furthermore the weather is cold so nice to walk around….
1. Staff is perfect. Always smiling and happy to help.
2. Also the location is perfect. Nearby Otaru canal, easy to reach the Otaru JR station.
3. Free coffee machine with aromatic coffee
The staff is a lovely and friendly Japan lady who can use English and Chiness very well.
The Hostel is a lovely history building just located on Otaru city, close to everything.
Plum house was very clean and comfortable. The room size was on the bigger size for Japanese hotels. The staff were very friendly and the breakfast was delicious.
Older hotel but well maintained located at the end of a shopping arcade. Numerous dining options nearby. Arcade is located just below the train station.
