Wakayama was never on our list until we heard about Kumano Kodo. It was an underrated city where there were many interesting places to explore. We would recommend doing the Kumano Kodo - Nakahechi route walk for anyone who loves hiking. The minimum of 4 days were required for this route, as we did. We spent 2 days hiking from Takijiri-oji near Tanabe city to Kumano Hongu Taisha. Then, we explored Yunomine Onsen which was one of the oldest onsen town in Japan and Kawayu Onsen where we could dig our own onsen pool on the river bank. We also recommended doing a boat tour down the river to Kumano Hayatama Taisha as it was part of the UNESCO world heritage site. Lastly, to complete the 3 grand shrines, we visited Kumano Nachi Taisha and the Nachi falls, the tallest fall in Japan, on our last day. The logistics were not difficult. We took the Kuroshio train to and from Wakayama and local bus in Hongu area.

Wakayama castle was very good, not only the view from the top of the tower but also the garden and tea room and secret corridor! You can also enter into the museum if you show the Wakayama castle entrance ticket. The zoo is ok for kids but not so much for grown up!

It’s one of the less popular destinations and thus prices are really nice. A lot of fresh fruits and sea is reasonably clean. If you don’t have time to go to Shirahama, Wakayama city is the second best. Isonoura beach has white sand.

This is our first time to Wakayama and we fell in love with it! It’s a quiet town but people are friendly. Easy to drive to various places of interest like Shirahama. We see more locals than foreign tourists in Wakayama and really love the tranquility of this place. I will definitely spend longer time in wakayama if I come back to Osaka again 👍

Wakayama city prioritizes automobiles. Cars are everywhere.
Wakayama city prioritizes automobiles. Cars are everywhere. Bus service is excellent. Walking is unpleasant because of the frequent need to give way to the few cars rolling through 6 lanes of asphalt.
In contrast, that makes the stroll around the castle a particularly nice experience. The gardens around are well maintained, very pretty. Every sunset is a new experience.
If you have a car, then sure, spend a night there, maybe two if you want to spend some time around Wakanoura. But then speed away to where the real magic of Wakayama happens: Koyasan, Kumano Nachi, Kumano Hongu,...

Wakayama City is a beautiful and relaxing place!
Wakayama City is a beautiful and relaxing place! Full of onsens and fun places to go. We visited Marina City, where we saw a Tuna filleting demonstration at Kuroshio Market and took beautiful photos in Porto Europe. We also saw Wakayama Castle which was stunning with the cherry blossoms in bloom and very fun with the ninjas roaming the grounds. They were quite helpful. The BEST part was the Fusion Museum in the Forte building where you can input a design on a computer and then ride a bicycle to knit the design!
The host was really cool and we could tell he is a very welcoming and warm-hearted soul. We appreciated the cleanliness and organization of the place. We really enjoyed the sauna and hot tub that felt brand new. It is also a convenient 10-minute walk to the beach! The host took some memorable pictures of us, which we also really appreciate. This is a special place ran by a genuine, down-to-earth host. Thank you G-Sun for creating a lovely Wakayama experience!
Coming from Kansai airport this was the best traditional indulgence of Japan we could have wished for!! Just about an hour away from the airport we got immediately indulged with a traditional Japanese experience. A seaside view room really is a seaside view and Kada is an authentic Fishery town. The staff is so friendly and helpful it's heartwarming. The traditional food is an experience by itself for dinner and especially breakfast.
Breakfast was OK. One of the toaster is malfunction not sure why is there . We used another one and is fine. Room size is actually bigger than I thought . I could actually open my 28 inch luggage without a problem at the end of my bed . Which most hotels in Japan budget hotel could not do. The sleeping area and guest floor corridors seems to be refurbished, so a bit better than the rest of the hotel areas.
This is a special hostel in Wakayama. Hiroko is so inviting and went over maps and the free bike rentals when we arrived so that we would know more about fun activities. The hostel is beautiful and clean. We loved staying there. We also really enjoyed being in Wakayama City and biking around to the castle, gardens and exploring around. It was a great location!!
The traditional Japanese room is very cozy and spacious, the garden and cafe are nice, the owners are sweet and their pets are super cute! It's hard to imagine a better place to stay for a surfing trip. You are sharing a house with a family, so this is not a guesthouse for late night partying, but there are some great izakayas a couple of train stops away.
Excellent choice of food for breakfast, especially if you like Japanese style…and fish. They even had fried whale meat on the menu.
Free noodle service between 9.30 - 11.00 pm
Beautiful onsen baths…the TV in the room will tell you how busy the baths are so that you can plan to go at a quieter time if you wish!
An easy 5 minute walk from Wakayama station.
The interior design of the hotel is sleek, yet simple, it wasn't garish like I would expect a higher quality hotel to be. The room had everything from dimmable lights, fridge, a great view of the city, and the tv has access to most of the common streaming applications. There's not anything I can think of missing from my stay, the ideal place.
Awesome hostel. Had possibly the best coffe I've had in Japan at the bar, as well as some crazy good basque burnt cheese cake. The bar is beatiful and the hostel itself is very nice as well. Rooms are super big. Location is very convenient, not far from the train station and close to Wakayama Castle and a lot of great restaurants.
The hotel looks so new even it’s built in 2008. The bed is by far the best during my whole Japan trip, so I had a good sleep there. Complimentary breakfast starts at 6:30 am, simple and yummy. Staff are professional and efficient in handling all requests. 🤩
A super cute Japanese style house also with a great little BBQ area to chill in after a swim. Our host was very hospitable and friendly and speaks a little English. Less than a minute walk to the beach, cafe, as is Isonoura station. We will be back for sure!
The staff was very friendly and approachable and they were genuinly welcoming. Breakfast was fabulous and there were loads of choice, western or Japanese. Top floor lounge were also brilliant with free drink. I will come back here in the future.
Very close to Wakayama JR station. The staff was very polite and the room was massive actually. I was so surprised by how large the room was and I booked a standard one. Clean and spacious. They provide pajamas and toiletries as well as a kettle.
A few stops by taking buses to the hotel, it's actually a walking distance for me if weather not hot and without luggage.
Great location near Wakayama castle with castle night view.
Warm and polite staff, spacious washroom, clean and quiet.
Overall, a fantastic place to stay for cheap, in an excellent location in Wakayama City. Great views from the 9th floor breakfast buffet, fairly comfortable rooms, and helpful staff made Smile Hotel a great fit for us.
Location is near restaurants and across the street from Wakayama Castle. Try to ask for room on the castle side for a great view of the castle. The breakfast was delicious with many western and Japanese choices.
Excellent location right next to Wakayama-shi train station with very convenient shops and restaurants right next to the hotel that you can access through a sheltered walkway on the 2nd floor.
