Commonly spelled Fez, this city was Morocco’s capital during Middle Ages. The city was originally composed of two separate settlements located along the banks of the Jawhar River. Madinat Fas was founded in 789 by Idris I, while Al-'Aliya was founded by his son Idris II. Both towns grew autonomously until the Almoravids unified them in 1070 under the name ‘Fas’. The city is still considered a beacon of the Islamic civilisation, due to its ancient ‘madrasas’ Islamic colleges.
The Old Town or ‘medina’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, representing one of the best preserved historic centres in the world. The famous ‘riads’ or small traditional hotels are located in the medina, which is also called Fes Al-Bali.
The city can be reached through Fès Saïss Airport, or from the airports in Casablanca and Rabat via railway or bus connection. Whether you’re looking for a luxury hotel in Fez New Town or a historic ‘riad’ in the medina, don’t miss Booking.com’s wide offering!

Fez is good just for a day and it’s good to go to chefchouien from there for a day trip. Be careful of the people who take you to the tanneries and local outlets where they overcharge for stuff. The Medina has lots of shops having cheaper stuff of similar quality so better to check in different places before buying. Food is very good everywhere. Taxis are cheap. Place is very safe.

just dont. Morocco has a lot more good cities to spent time. If you really want to see then 1 day would be plenty but for me even this duration might be too long. In this city you always need to be on your toes or else you are an easy target for people who wants to just squeze money out of you

The Medina and its surrounds are very charming to look at from a rooftop, however to be quite honest, spending time walking endlessly in the narrow and enclosed space felt quite oppressive. We weren’t interested in buying anything and it was a bit of an assault to see the endless offerings of basically the same things. The merchants looked resigned to their fate and the energy of the place just didn’t feel great. Kind of depressing.

Fez is a beautifull city with a gorgeous old medina.
Fez is a beautifull city with a gorgeous old medina. We didn't use a guide but google maps and it worked just fine for the main roads. But if you stay near the old medina and need to go somewhere via the narrow alleyways you can get lost easily! It's a maze where everything looks the same.
The people are mostly friendly but they will try their best to get you in their shop or restaurant which can be frustrating. But just say no respectfully and most of the time they will leave you alone.
Don't listen to people who are saying things are closed, like the doors of the medina or places during prayer time. Its not true and they only do say that to get you to another place.
After all its a beautifull place, but with sometimes frustrating locals, but they just want to make money and I understand that.

I would not recommend this city.
I would not recommend this city.
I liked the place where I stayed - the host was very nice.
But the city itself is cahotic and overwelming… a lot of harassement, a lot of con people trying to get money from you, lots of drug dealers in the street pretending to be your friend just to force you to buy from them, you cant look around to the shops because someone always wants to force you to buy something. I am an extrovert and this city was too much for me. I think I never got so scammed so fast and so aware of it all my life.
It smells miserable and it is very dirty - I don’t you are ready for the smell of the tanneries…
Almost no music anywhere, mostly just praying on megafones 5x a day.
We did manage to find some truly kind people, but the rate of those vs. the ones who just wanted money from us/to sell their services, was too much! Be sure you book a place with a nice host to help you navigate throught these situations and emotions…
We had the best stay at this riad! The hosts were so kind and in communication with us well before our arrival. Parking was very easy and the host met us to walk us the rest of the way to the riad. The room was beautiful and very clean. Dinner was great as well. The hosts were kind enought to arrange us a guide for our day in Fez and they couldn't have chosen a better person; we had the absolute best day!! Great location close to taxis and waking to the medina. We had the best stay and would definitely return!
We had the luck and honour to stay for 2 nights in the sublime private riad in the Palais de Fes. The setting is incredibly authentic, the staff is superfriendly, they really make you feel at home together with providing an excellent service. The location is superb at the entrance of the medina, with impressive views over the city. On all criteria this hotel is excellent and that s the first time I give a global 10 on 10! Bravo to the whole team working there and the family behind.
One of the highlights of our 3 1/2 week tour of Morocco! Monique, the owner of the Riad has done a fantastic job in re-building and creating a gem . We stayed in a suite for 3 nights, fit for a king (wish it could have been more). Great breakfast, quiet place to relax from the hectic Fes Medina. If you looking for a place in Fes with easy access, close to the Medina, Riad Norma is the place!!
Thank you Monique, Younes and rest of staff for making this a memorable experience!
The place is really beautiful and comfortable, a typical Moroccos styled house well placed right at the entrance of the Medina with a sweet view of the city from the terrace. Also the staff was very kind and really helpful, giving us a lot of information about the city. The hospitality and the services were very good. We had a nice stay at the hotel and we suggest it to everyone who wants a peaceful stay in Fes.
This is the most amazing riad we stayed in Morocco, every part was beautifully decorated, and our king suite was very beautiful with a huge bathroom. We also had dinner at the riad and it was one of the best dinners we had in Morocco, definitely worth it! The location was also perfect, inside the Medina but at the edge of it, so no risk of getting lost but also close to the main road to take a taxi.
Riad Diamant De Fes was the best experience during my entire Morocco vacation and I recommend it to Anyone looking to have a relaxed stay.
Great interior , absolutely clean, amazing rooftop and perfectly located in the middle of the Medina but still quite - and on top of that the breakfast is delicious.
The service is also perfect as the staff understands their job and knows what good service means.
We have had a great stay at Omar's Riad! Very welcoming, helpful and truthful! Located in the heart of the medina, Omar will give you any valuable tips you may need.
The room was tidy, comfortable and we did not miss anything.
Breakfast was amazing and among the best we have had in Morocco so far, thank you!
We definitely recommend everyone to stay here while in Fes.
Merci !

Oshman, who was the host at Dar Malmamoun, made my trip to Fes special. Oshman is unassuming, passionate about Fes, meeting and connecting people, and went out of his way to make my stay a good one. He is very knowledgeable of Moroccan culture, history, and of course the best spots for any food or goods in Fes. He single-handedly made my trip to Fes the highlight of my stay in Morocco.
A real immersion in the ancient imperial capital of Morocco ! I spent two magic nights in this traditional Ryad with his garden, patio and swimming pool. Located in the heart of the historical « Medina » of Fes, the Ryad is well conserved and full of artisanal pieces.
The host Jalal is a real local, full of advices and very helpful ! Thanks for this unforgettable experoence :).

Riad Fes Iline is very well located close to the Fes Medina. Also the breakfast is more than adequate and they can offer a good and competitively priced dinner plus wine and beer if desired. Transfers to and from the hotel are great and they can also arrange local tours if required. Staff are attentive and willing to provide whatever we needed. The rooms are clean and comfortable.
Very nice place in the Medina of Fes, with a gorgeous view from the hotel terrace. Traditional building in a central and comfortable position (taxis can pick you and drop you nearby), big rooms with air condition, clean facilities and friendly staff - with traditional breakfast included (fresh products, not industrial snacks). An excellent quality/price rate!
It was one of the greatest places we stayed during our trip through Morocco. Very kind and nice people who are running the place.
The riad is very beautifull inside and you have direct access to the medina of Fes through some seperate exit.
If you stay there we can only highly recommend to eat dinner in the riad once. It was one of the best we got.
Its a unique little boutique-style hotel near the city of Fes. Accessible and walking distance to the Medina and shops. Friendly owners (Salah & Nour) and staffs. Great hospitality. Nour even arranged some tours with us so we won’t get lost in the Medina. They also packed us breakfast as we were rushing for the morning train.
Super little dar in the heart of Fès médina. Perfect location, compact yet very clean & comfortable rooms. The best breakfast I've had in Morocco (I've had a lot!) & superb rooftop for watching the moon, stars & city. Excellent hospitality. This place is great value for money & ideal for a night or two whilst exploring Fès.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. They accommodated an extension to our stay. The roof terrace is great and gives amazing views of Fes. A great place to relax and read. The breakfast was impressive, the best we had in Morocco. The rooms were clean and with comfy beds. Would recommend this hotel.
The hotel is amazing, very well located in the middle of the Medina.
Super super clean and comfortable.
The people working at the hotel were very nice, friendly and they make you feel at home.
For sure if I have the chance to visit Fes again I will stay in the same hotel.
This riad was the best one we stayed at while in Morocco. The rooms were huge, the breakfast was amazing, and the service was exceptional. Our experience with this Riad went above and beyond expectations. We will stay here again when we’re back in Fes.
Many hotels talk about exceptional customer service. Riad Fes Maya more than delivered. Anna was the best host. She attended to all of your needs and was beyond flexible.
The hotel arranged a half day walking tour guide of the medina. Omar was excellent - informative pleasant interested and professional. Highly recommended.
