The Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux, hotel in Mdina

The Xara Palace Boutique Hotel is a unique 17th-century palace hidden away in the medieval fortified city of Mdina, the old capital of Malta.

The staff were excellent: friendly, professional and attentive. This is the only hotel within the city walls of Mdina - so the location was perfect. We stayed for three nights - and dined at Medina, Trattoria AD1530 and Mondion (for the best tasting menu ever!!). These restaurants are all in Mdina and linked with the hotel, so booking was easy.

Waterfront, hotel in Mdina

The Waterfront Hotel is set in central Malta, along the sea promenade of Sliema, and features views of Sliema's port, the Manoel Island and Valletta.

Incredible stay! Loved it from beginning to end. We visited Valetta by taxi as it was too windy for the ferry but it was really cheap. As soon as we got there we were grateful we were staying in Sliema which is much quieter and a bit more local. Alex the front office manager is an absolute superstar as is the security guard (who's name I've sadly forgotten). He came from his office to help me get out of the car park when it was a bit tight due to where someone else was.

Porto Azzurro Aparthotel, hotel in Mdina

The Porto Azzurro Aparthotel, in Xemxija Bay, is prominently situated overlooking the picturesque St. Paul’s Bay with breathtaking views of the Maltese countryside.

Fairly good location, with 24hr reception, restaurant, very small gym and very small indoor pool. Room was equipped with kitchen facilities - fridge, kettle, toaster, microwave and hob/rings. Plenty of crockery and glasses etc plus sharp knives and cutlery. Comfortable beds and space to move around, with added bonus of a small table and chairs. Parking available for a few cars right outside. Very close to bus stops.

Absolutely amazing place with the best views across the island. There's so much history to see and experience and loads of choice for food. Definitely wander out of the main gate and over to Crystal Palace for the best Pastizzi, and Fontanella's on the city wall is a must.

Mdina is nice for a few hours but there’s not a lot to do if you have done all the museums, cathedrals and archaeological sites in other parts of Malta and Gozo as we had done. It’s very historical with lovely glassware and silver jewellery in the quaint little shops. It was a nice place to chill out after a hectic few days elsewhere on Malta.

A truly spectacular ancient small walled city.

A truly spectacular ancient small walled city. The downside of this being the sheer number of tourists, however in the early morning or latter in the evening when they have left it has a serenity , it is wonderful then to just wander the ancient streets.

This is quite simply the most well run small hotel I have ever stayed in. The owner Omar and his wife Sandra are the most kind and accommodating hoteliers you could hope to meet. We loved this hotel, highly recommended. The hotel is spotless and absolutely stunning. The restaurant was excellent and the staff friendly and attentive. We changed another booking to stay here after stumbling across it by chance when walking are Mdina. These wonderful people deserve your money.

This is our 3rd visit to the Xara Palace and it never fails to impress! The staff are superb, always welcoming and helpful, Jackie had a smile for us every morning at breakfast! The room we had was a standard room, but it was far from standard! The decoration and furnishings were perfect with lots of space for the two of us. It was lovely and quiet, ideal for a relaxing few days away exploring the island. It truly is a gem of a hotel.

Very spacious and very well equipped property. Loved the uniqueness of the layout and in the height of summer the pool area was an excellent facility to be able to enjoy. It felt like we were living in a part of Mdina's history. As a base for visiting Malta, Mdina is ideally placed, with taxis and local buses easy to pick up from the main gate. Peter and his staff couldn't be more helpful throughout the duration of our stay.

The hotel was absolutely beautiful, top notch! It’s a boutique hotel so the owners and staff are very personable and cater to your needs. We were treated amazingly from arrival at the airport to check out. Our suite was beautifully decorated and luxurious. We were sad to leave. My family and I will definitely stay here on our next trip to Malta.

We liked the lovely warm friendly welcome from Ana! The hotel was superb, all the furnishings and fittings were of a very high standard! All the staff were excellent but Ana went out of her way to make us welcome and even set up supper for us upstairs because the restaurant was closed on Sunday and Monday evenings!
