Male is best for a stopover for a night if you have an early flight as the commute to the islands may not make it possible to catch your flight. When I flew in I was able to catch a ferry to an island I was staying. My flight out was very early in the morning so I had to stay in Male. Very crowded and stressful in my opinion.

Its very easy to go around, was able to walk everywhere, did not need a taxi. I would recommend eating out by the seaside restaurant, they have beautiful views and amazing ambience in the evening. Otherwise, I will not recommend staying in Male if you are on holidays, you can stay in the nearby islands and visit Male late afternoon.

Very easy to move around the city by foot, bus transport or taxi. Jetty's are available to visit nearby islands/atolls as well. Densely packed place.
Densely packed place. Few pavements, many parked motorcycles and very uneven surface. Stout shoes required. Generally polite locals but some prefer to hog what pavement there is and expect you to move, Don't expect too many smiles.

The best part by far was the host Rose who was so very pleasant and truly took care of EVERYTHING. They had someone waiting for us at the airport to transport us to hotel- complimentary. Breakfast was included and since we needed to leave early, Rose prepared us fresh fruit, yogurt and coffee at 6 am and then arranged for the taxi back to airport (also included!) The restaurant at the hotel was beautiful and delicious.

They gave us a 'welcome drink' of lemon tea when we arrived (so good after a long day of travel). I highly recommend the Belle Amie Bistro next door - excellent breakfast and dinner there! Space in between with a little kitchen and a table was a nice and unexpected addition. As well as free transfer from/to the airport. Breakfast was conveniently arranged at short notice (kids woke up and in 20 min we were having a breakfast). "Grand" in hotel name can be hardly applied to its size. The Tour Inn is on the top floors of an apartment block. Rooms are small but very clean modern and well laid out. Breakfast delicious and great to set us up for the day. We only stayed one night as it was transit before heading to an island. Staff are great friendly efficient and airport transfer (15 mins) well organised and comfortable.
