I had a great stay here: the hostel had a great, homely vibe. Easily to socialise with other travellers in the communal areas and Ian provided real Kiwi hospitality + great suggestions for what to do locally. Kitchen was kept spotless. Really, really good value for money compared to other places I've stayed.
Fantastic location close to bus stop, supermarket and the river trail.

I'd never used a B'n'B before and we couldn't find accommodation in Taupo for the Supercars. I was pleasantly surprised. Very clean, comfortable and just right for one or two people. Host was lovely and prompt with any comms between us. Booking.com says 3 nights but we actually added another night (4 night stay).
Happy with our choice.

Turangi has many interesting outdoor activities, and it is in the central North Island with mountains, rivers, Lake Taupo nearby, but we were just passing through and for us it was a place to break the long journey, rather than a destination in itself.

It's a great stopover location say between Auckland and Wellington but it's hard to find good food and the prices e.g. food and petrol reflect a lack of true competition and a feeling "well, you've got little choice"

A comfortable apartment with great views over Lake Taupo.
A comfortable apartment with great views over Lake Taupo. We stayed two nights and used it as our base for doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, so it was perfect for that. Oreti Resort is about 14km from Turangi, so you definitely need a car for eating out etc.

We found plenty to do in our 3 day stay.
We found plenty to do in our 3 day stay. We popped up to Taupo and went to Orakei korako. Then to beautiful lake Rotopounamu and walked around that. And did the picturesque river walk. We hired a rental car so we could look around easily. We could have easily filled in a whole week.

Central to some wonderful activities such as great rafting, the walk Tongariro crossing, Ruapehu. 'Up market' accommodation is very limited but if you can get into the Tongariro Lodge, it is excellent. Worth the extra cost. The locals are helpful and the town has a nice relaxed non-touristy feel; however avoid leaving your car parked overnight on a street. Shopping, apart from Groceries is limited.

Turangi is a lovely little town.
Turangi is a lovely little town. Not much going on in the actual town itself but has everything you need in terms of supermarkets etc. and easy access to the Tongariro Crossing and lots of other beautiful walks nearby. Recommend the Tongariro River Walk and Lake Rotopounamu walk too. Lovely swimming spots! I stayed for 4 nights in the end which was great. Recommend staying here! And also use Panda Shuttles to get to the Tongariro crossing or anywhere in the local area. Stay at Riverstone Lodge if you can!
Braxmere Lodge is located on the south shore of beautiful Lake Taupo, right the waters edge. It is an hours drive from Taupo, 10 minutes from nearest shops and restaurants in Turangi. So it a gorgeous and isolated setting.
The unit was spacious and tidy and newly renovated. The king sized bed was very comfortable. There was a microwave, large fridge, and good range of basic tea and coffee making options.
Look at the view from outside the lounge in our unit in the photograph below.
Creel Lodge is well away from SH1 traffic noise which is a great blessing in Turangi. The unit felt spacious, private and cozy. It had been prepared to welcome me - milk in the fridge, heating and lights on. The bed was comfortable, kitchen well equipped, bathroom excellent, furniture in lounge really good quality. There was even a newspaper at my door in the morning, a great touch. I'll definitely stay there again - I've struggled for years to find somewhere nice in Turangi.
We arrived at the Tokaanu Lodge Motel in a driving rainstorm. Although the weather was dreadful, our two day stay here was excellent. The room, though dated, was clean and well-equipped. The owners were both warm and friendly and had some really good recommendations for our upcoming visit to the South Island. We really enjoyed our stay here. The hot pools were an added bonus.
The location is great. Not too far from Turangi for any goods need but quiet enough for a weekend chill. 1 minute walking to Taupo lake, which is beautiful.
We had booked the room in the last minute, just on Friday night and visited on Saturday, but everything is more than expect.
The motel is not big (~10 rooms I guess so) but the room is very clean and warm.
I wanted an economical weekend trip over Waitangi weekend and this motel was ideal because it was very good value, half the price of similar motels in Taupo, yet only 45 minutes drive from Turangi to Taupo. It's a great central location. The staff at the motel were friendly and the accommodation was spacious and warm.
The owner is an absolute sweetheart always trying to help and connect everybody.
The most social and friendly hostel I've been to so far here in New Zealand. I liked it a lot because it's small with not too many people (but enough to meet others).
I'd always come back!
We had a great stay, very private and quiet. The continental breakfast was an added bonus.
Very friendly hosts and we would definitely stay again.
We highly recommend Tongariro Lodge for dinner. Great food and it's only a few hundred metres away
- The studio was really big
- The instructions on how to use the facilites were clear
- Parking was available for each room
- Their hot pool was not avilable, but the Tokaanu hot pools were located within a walking distance
Great little lodge for people who are in to fishing and being away from the crowds. Would be perfect for a weekend with friends. Loved the individual cabins with central restaurant/bar and reading/meeting area.
We stayed in the comfort apartment which is like home away from home.Has every thing you might need. The motel is close to Turangi shopping centre. There are plenty of places to get variety for meals close by.
Breakfast wasn’t being served due to the Lodge being in the Red Zone. We thought that a continental breakfast should have been available in the room to save a trip into Turangi for breakfast.
great set up for our extended family. great location, close to turangi, Mt Ruapehu and Taupo but also just perfect if you don’t feel like going anywhere because it has everything you need.
