It is important to have proper expectations about this hotel. It is from another era. There is no staff - i checked in at the karaoke bar and got a key. The rooms were minimal. It was a chilly night and I could not find a heater. HOWEVER. The room was very clean, no strange smells, the bed was comfortable and that was all I really wanted for the night. Dont bring your lover here if you are trying to impress them. But as a place to stop for the night it was fine!

Loved the Riverside restaurants and playground area.
Loved the Riverside restaurants and playground area. The Hunderwaisser museum was good too. The walk along the river on a good day and arty house and crafts in shops are delightful. Whangarei city is nice to investigate the many stores and restaurants some up little alley ways. Great coffee and breakfasts there too. It's a lovely city I've visited many times.

People/salespersons are usually pleasant and helpful.
People/salespersons are usually pleasant and helpful.
Your ID will probably be checked at least once by police.
Large selection of food places.
Apart from Hundertwasser Art Centre, Whangarei Museum, the alternative Quarry Art Centre and the Waterfalls, check out town has anything else you need or are interested in… a quiet town otherwise!

The place is pretty by the marina with shops and restaurants, but! Due to circumstances missed the lunch/dinner hours for eating out. All (yes all on the waterfront) restaurants only offer bar snacks during other hours. EG fries, squid rings etc. We wanted something more substantial. Many people were walking away when they found that out. This is a tourist spot for pities sake!
We had had a long drive and were starving!
Also no really nice accommodation. Best I found was 3 1/2 star Distinction Hotel which has good bones but was really tired needing a major makeover. Stained carpet, wall paper peeling off. I am a kiwi and embarrassed that this tourist spot has sat on its laurels. I know people struggling with covid etc but wouldn’t you want to do everything in your power to make your place more desirable. My view - if you don’t have to stop don’t 😡

Pembrooke was across the road from a lovely inner city bush.
Pembrooke was across the road from a lovely inner city bush. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony and listening to the birdsong. Supermarkets and eats were close enough.
We didn't have enough time to visit places though we know there are great places to visit.

We only stayed for one night so we managed to get down to the marina and see the cool ball-clock and the Hundertwasser (which is amazing) and have an awesome lunch (so many places to pick from!). Next time we go to Whangarei we will be sure to do the loop walk which sounds very interesting indeed!

We went with the kids to aquatic centre, flip out, action zone and the heritage park. Very good family entertainment and easy to drive from place to place. The motel is very close to supermarkets and various eateries. Good location.
This place is a hostal at best. photo looks good but that’s it. it should not be called a residential villa. there are 2 bathrooms but they are community bathrooms. our bedroom is at the attic with no windows. don’t stay there unless you are expecting a hostal. I have much better hostals before, even in China. we didn’t stay because we couldn’t. we paid for the first night. we cancel the 2nd night. community kitchen is just not to the standard. sorry. it’s my fault, I should ask more questions. next time I’ll do better.
The concept of the Grand is awesome with so much potential original nostalgia. But you check in at the pub!!! Room had broken door handles and grout hanging off the walls, bad repair on the cracked sink(definitely worth saving and not replacing with crappy modern sink). The repairs are horrid, and take away from such a beautiful hotel under the dirt, and bad workmanship. Not thought through at all. The nostalgia of staying in the old Grand was great, and staff tried hard to make it good. Pity such a potential is wasted
This is a lovely house-hotel place. You are sharing this house with other traveling guests, so some socializing would be going on if you stay here for more than one day. The rooms are cozy with comfortable beds. There was a small TV and plug-in electric heater provided. There are a couple of bathrooms to be shared and a homey kitchen. The host was very kind and communicative. The price was very fair as accommodations vary in this northern section of New Zealand.
Pleasant place to stay. Host was welcoming and very accommodating during our stay. Bed sheets and towels were more than enough and clean.
Staff were kind and never had any issue. Rooms were quiet and private as walls are built with bricks and concrete.
Heat pump was near new and wasn’t smelly.
Great location as it is right off the state highway 1 in Whangarei town, which is very handy to access the CBD.
I would definitely return when I’m back in Whangarei.
We picked the Quest due to its central location in Whangarei which made it easy to walk around town. The staff were friendly enough and the room was a decent size and clean.
There is secure on-site car parking under the building for a price, but be aware that spaces are limited and it's quite tight.
There is amazing urban art in Whangerei which was an pleasant surprise and totally unexpected.
The staff was soooo kind !!! Even though we have family living in Whangarei. We were in the country organising a surprise 60th for mum and had to hide out somewhere for a few days while doing the last organising for the event. Our lovely host was ever so kind to even offer any help if we needed to get things organised. Offer for us to use the motel fairy lights if need be.
Enjoyed our stay here - comfortable rooms, great service and good location (quick 5 min drive into town centre). Generally well equipped and facilities were clean (some parts were a bit older-looking, but still very much did the job!). Also learnt that this motel is pretty much on the opposite side of the globe from the real Casablanca haha!
It is an older hotel, The bathroom was spotless, and large, The room itself was big with a balcony overlooking the marina. The staff in the restaurant were young and in training, they were excellent. Well done to the hotel for employing young locals and training them well. Room service breakfast was good. I would stay again.
A little gem in Whangarei… spotlessly clean, comfortable, quiet and excellent value for money .. wonderful host with friendly helpful advice and information which was greatly appreciated.. a variety of good restaurants right next door which after a full day out was very convenient ..would highly recommend this motel
Location good it's central walked to town and had dinner at the Tai restaurant on site and breakfast across the road. Staff were friendly and Informative overall we had a good night. Food and drink was cheap the manager a lady was was very caring. Would visit again
Ralph absolutely saved me as I struggled to find accommodation in Whangārei at the last minute! I had been stitched up by my original hotel and thankfully Ralph was welcoming and helpful. Easy to find location, a comfortable bed and gorgeous view from the rooms.
No breakfast but will next time. A most enjoyable stay and will stay again next time in Whangarei. Very friendly staff and please convey to cleaners of the amazing job they do.
10 out of 10 Pembrooke Motel and thank you 👍👍👍
The Settlers seems fine for a 3 star hotel room. The host was very pleasant and welcoming - probably the best part of the stay. Did not go to the bar or Restaurant. As far as I can tell fine for a stopover for work.
Despite requesting B&B, breakfast was NOT included. Hotel was tired and shabby. Rooms were noisy from nearby guests and staff working overnight in laundry. Pool was dirty, difficult to get into and freezing.
