Mértola is an ancient town, dating back to at least Roman times, full of interesting history, well worth reading up on by those interested. The castle and old church are open to the public and well worth a visit. It has its own charm, full of restaurants, many with traditional cuisine and really good value. The surrounding countryside is a mix of steppe grasslands, woodland and some fascinating rocky hills and gorges. I have a great interest in wildlife and in this area there are a number of rare birds, such as Great and Little Bustards, which can be seen in the steppe areas, especially early in the mornings. I was lucky to get some photos of the Great Bustard, see below. There are also Spanish Imperial Eagles breeding here, one of the rarest eagles in Europe and the rare Lesser Kestrel can be seen flying around the castle in the town.

Beautiful small city, breathtaking views, friendly people, good fairly priced food. We stayed at Alojamento Oasis in a perfect selfcatering room, with view over the Guadiana river. All for 20 euros per night!

Wonderful to stay for a few days, just park the car and walk the rest of the holiday, you can cycle, canoe, walk by the river, go and have a meal, seat in a cafe and have a drink, very pretty and lots of little traditional details, some beautiful architecture, plenty of shops to buy food and restaurants, go on a boat trip up and down the river, wake up hearing the sheeps bells rambling on the river margin and watch the sunset hearing the shrills of the swallows and relax.

Mértola has always had a serious problem of self-marketing.
Mértola has always had a serious problem of self-marketing. They have a very nice islamic museum (the only in the entire country). Yet is is closed for works, ... in high season.
The castle is closed at precisely the times (lower sun) when it would offer the greatest views on this marvellous town. And there is nothing else so exciting so see there, except the medieval cistern, etc. So. why close it at all, and charge money?
The Mosque is the only surviving one in the entire country, i.e. the Portuguese didn't destroy it so much. So it can easily be recognised as a Mosque. But yet: it is also hardly ever open (it is a church, obviously).
So, you bring all kind of people from everywhere into this magic little city on the edges of Portugal, just in order that they stand all the time facing closed doors. This situation has indeed been worsening. Before, the castle was simply not gated and everybody knew who could let you into the Church-Mosque.
It is so embarrassing.
Casa dos Chocalhos is situated in a rural area about 15 minutes drive from Mertola, perfect for a relaxed few days away from everything but great for exploring Mertola itself, the Guadiana river and wine farms to the north and west. This region is hot in August, 40°C+ so the pool and outdoor shower are just perfect for that, a great outdoor area with 'churrasco', aircon in the bedrooms. Bernardo was in contact for any queries via WhatsApp and we were greeted on arrival by Helena with a warm welcome, thank you both.
We had a lovely view of the river. The room was clean and the beds were very comfortable. The hotel itself is very interesting with the heavy glass floor that allows people to view an old archeological site within the hotel. We also enjoyed the breakfast that was offered. Across the street from the hotel are steps that take you up to streets above where there are restaurants and shops. You can also walk from the hotel to the castle and view the archeological site with amazing panoramic views.
Mértola is worth a visit! Beautiful small town with lots of history and several decent restaurants above a scenic river. The apartment is quite well equipped, the main bedroom is good and the bed as well. Bathroom is nice as well (one morning no warm water, not a big problem in a Portuguese summer). Walking distance to everything and on street parking close to the door. The host is not on site, but responsive via WhatsApp. Very nice and spacious terrace (street side, no privacy though).
Loved our stay at Casa da Tia Amalia. The couple signing us in were extremely friendly and helpful. We came with 3 bicycles and they let us store them in his workshop about 3 doors down. Just gave us the keys to get to them whenever we needed them. The design of our room was very rustic with doors hand made like barn doors. A lot of creativity went into this these rooms.
Mértola is a lovely little town, with a short walk across the bridge to see the castle and town.
The Hotel was very close to the castle and was very quiet. Initially when we checked in after a long drive, our room was not quite as we expected but Carlos allowed us to change to a nicer room with a bigger bed.
It was very quiet for sleeping a
art from the howling wind. Carlos was a very gracious host.
Charming hotel right across the river from Mértola castle. Perfect location for exploring the area. Easy parking. The room was cute, clean, and comfortable. Walked to a good restaurant. Our room had a view of the castle. We drove and hiked in the area and returned to the hotel each evening.
House has a good location, really in the heart of Mértola historical center.
Modern and comfortable facilities.
What made the experence really exhilarating was the big garden, full or orange trees, chairs and great views of River Guadiana and old town.
Charm and relaxed atmosphere of Mértola.
The hotel is located not far from the castle and the Mertola "river beach" which is scenic though some people did say there were places where locals swam. We had use of the kitchen. We would have liked to have had access to the sun terrace but this was closed. Good for a short stay.
Absolutely wonderful host, very welcoming and helpful to ensure we had an enjoyable stay
Excellent view of the river and the city of Mertola
Comfortable room, included a small shared kitchenette
Excellent hosts and hospitality. This is a true hidden gem in Mértola. Located off the beaten bath it was absolutely wonderful for our family of four and we will certainly make a return visit.
Confortable room, wonderfull view to river, castle and pool. The host was very frendly and helpfull. The restaurant next door serving delicious dishes. A wonderfull place to discover Mértola.
Great cosy location, lot of nices detailes. Owners very fiendly, proud to be part of a beautiful environment. Perfect positioned, few minutes to the most interesting sites of Mertola.
Location in downtown Mértola, river view, peaceful quiet morning, nice views out both windows, cute balcony. We loved jumping in the pool. Hot water in shower. Comfortable bed.
Comfortable bed, high quality linens, central, quiet, view, affordable, daily housekeeping. We truly enjoyed our stay here. Free museums. Roman roads to hike on. Thank you
Good, clean budget style hotel in nice position overlooking the river. Breakfast basic yet adequate. Appears to be popular with cyclists and motor cyclists.
Great view of old town Mertola, clean rooms, and cozy facility. It almost feels like staying at a family's home. A wonderful place for a great relaxation.
