The hotel is a bit far from the train station, but the busses to Alishan actually stop quite near it (Wenhua Lukou), so it proved conveniently located. The room was clean and comfy, recently renovated.

The city is quite warm to the rest of the country (not sure how warm it would have been in the southern part of the country)
Not very many speaks English but it’s good to experience the country side of Taiwan.
It was too difficult to understand the transportation system as there was nothing in English. Booking public transportation to Alishan was a nightmare but a lovely lady who works in the station helped us to get the tickets from the Family Mart vending machine.
There are plenty of options to eat and there is plenty of value for money options than Taipei City. It’s pretty clean but noticed loads of homeless citizens. The city is improving and I think it is worth visiting it and probably people will because of Alishan National Park.

There are hidden gems in this city that you need to explore. Do your homework before you come then you will find this city very interesting, like i did. Only set back is the frequency of buses. However it was compensated by thr cheap and efficient taxi.
My favourite places Hinoki Village & Old Prison.
I ate at Wenhua Road Nite Market especially recommends Smartfish (Lin Chong Min Shop).

The 'hot spots' - HInoki Village, old prison, Chaiyi Park, etc. - are pleasant enough, but nothing extraordinary. The Tile Museum, however, is the most unique and interesting touristic place in my opinion.

Some pretty areas, but nothing too special.
Some pretty areas, but nothing too special. Very dense, bad traffic and packed streets for such a small town, unpleasant and difficult to get around. No rental bikes at all. Unhelpful tourism desk at the train station send me to places that had already closed and didn't have updated bus times.
Hinoki Village is very pretty and pleasant, and the nearby Jail is an interesting historical site but has no English at all. The Fine Arts museum is very beautiful and pleasant but didn't have much to see. Annoying and difficult to get anywhere due to lack of rental bikes. Annoying, sparse schedule of buses and trains to Alishan made this the only city in Taiwan where I really, really felt the need for private transportation.
Compared to other small towns in Taiwan, there wasn't that much to see and the density was worse than average, with a ton of traffic even on side streets that made exploration unpleasant.

Less bustling than the other cities in Taiwan.
Less bustling than the other cities in Taiwan. The night market here had some of the best food we had had all trip (douhua omg!). Travelling from here to Fenqihu (to go to Alishan) was easy and stress free.
The people here we're very helpful and polite, seeing that we were a little lost.

Commonly underestimated as the mere starting point for the Alishan Forest Rail express - Chiayi itself is a very friendly town with amazing fruits, nice local market vendors and pretty temples and parks to explore. Just grab a map at the tourist information when you arrive at the train station, the maps provided give you some tips for exploring the city. Would totally recommend spending a day there before heading to Alishan, you won't regret it!
Hsin Hotel is new, clean, room is well designed to cater for their guests both domestic and international visitors. The rooms have international plug adapter- which is the first we’ve seen in our two weeks trip around Taiwan!
It is a child friendly accommodation with activities for kids.
The lobby cafe is by Starbucks which caters for coffee drinkers.
We also loved the hospitality and friendly staff.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Great location and super comfortable, met some lovely people there as well. Very easy going place and I felt at home for the two nights I was there. Very close the train station, perfect if you plan on taking day trips to Alishan. Right across the road from the Chiayi Art Museum which is worth a visit.
Location was within walkable distance to many tourist attractions near Chiayi city (e.g. 30 mins walk to Hinoki village). We also had a free upgrade to a Deluxe Double room. The room was really clean, neat and new. All the facilities and equipment were also pretty new/well-maintained.
Quite new hotel, comfort leisure, reasonable price. It's look like small building in front, but inside is quite large and well decoration. Vegan breakfast is the best. Location is also convenient, a few step to Chiayi Train Station and next to famous turkey rice restaurant.
The location is near the Chaiyi train station to take the scenic train ride, about 5 mins away. There is a supermarket and 7 Eleven opposite the hotel. The night market is 10 min walk away. The hotel has some snacks at its lobby. It is value for money.
The kids room was a great addition to this (appealingly) new and clean hotel! The rooms were very comfortable, location within 5 min walk from the Alishan Forest Railway and lots of restaurants and cafes around. Staff was very helpful.
There is a better choice of hostel in Chiayi city. It is located at Zhongzheng rd. It is only 5 minutes walking across from Chiayi train station.
I like the digital passcode for entering the main door at 1st floor and your room.
The location of the hotel is quite near to the Chiayi train station which is the place to take a bus or train to Alishan mountain. The hotel is also quite near to several sightseeing sites in the Chiayi city
An aged hotel that had seen better days. All the facilities seemed reaching their lifespan. However, my room is still fairly good and clean and I had a comfortable stay. Location and price is hard to beat!
We like the hotel to be clean, spacious, comfy and value for money. There are also self help washing machines and dryers and we managed to wash our clothes in the middle of the trip.
We stayed one night on Alishan and returned to the hotel the next day. The counter staff were friendly and helped to store our luggage overnight. Good variety of food for breakfast
location is convenient for those who wants to take train to Alishan. hotel is just opposite the train station . walking distance to WenHua night market
