The reason for our visit to the area was to bike the High Bridge Trail, which was excellent. We were charmed by Farmville's downtown preservation efforts and enjoyed walking around. We had drinks beside the river at Charley's the afternoon of our arrival, very nice. Later on, we loved Hotel Weyanoke's rooftop bar. On the day we biked the trail, we stopped in town for brunch at Walker's Diner - the atmosphere, the food, the folks, all terrific! I would recommend a weekend in Farmville for charm, food and the relaxed vibe.

Farmville is a beautiful, historic central Virginia town, with far more amenities, interesting shops, and good restaurants than its humble-sounding name might suggest. It even has two universities!
It is also one of the towns on a self-guided driving tour (pamphlets on which are available at the Hotel Weyanoke and other spots downtown) to historically significant spots related to education, in particular education for the African American community, over the last century or so.
As you may know, many towns and cities in Virginia closed their public schools on the mid 20th century rather than comply with Federal desegregation mandates. White citizens set up 'private academies' for their children, which were basically much the same as the public schools that had been shuttered rather than admit African American students. African American families and communities had to set up their own schools with far fewer resources available to them.
However, many decades later, Farmville became one of the only cities in America that made reparations to African American students who had had to suffer during the years when no public schools were in operation. The city offered to pay tuition costs for higher education for those students who had been denied a good portion of what should have been their K-12 public education. Many more of the students -- who were in their 50s or 60s by then -- responded to this offer by saying yes. As I recall hearing, the town made good on its offer for everyone who was interested.
Farmville is a great little Virginia town in a beautiful setting, with a multitude of cultural, historical, shopping, antiquing, and outdoor recreational options downtown or nearby, making this a great getaway spot for people in the Washington, DC, area, as well as Richmond,, Charlottesville, Lexington, and northern North Carolina. I highly recommend a visit!!

Very nice small city.
Very nice small city.
Quiet with its own charm of traditions and modernity.
I would have loved to buy some pieces of furniture in the shops in main street but I arrived too late on Saturday evening and it was closed on Sunday.
There is a nice walk on and around the Appomattox River.
I recommend also the restaurant Charley's Waterfront Café !!!
There seems to be a valuable university, just in case.
