I grew up in Hazard so this isn't some out of town snob cracking on a small mountain town. I went off the EKU and never returned right out of high school. Went back this past week for a funeral. I was wondering if the place had changed or not. Oh my, yes it had!! Businesses closed, roads in disrepair, houses falling apart and an overwhelming air of broken down despair. I didn't think it possible but the place is an even worse pit of rot and decay than when I left 40 years ago. Imagine Detroit meets Appalachia with a healthy dose of narcotics trade and you get a good idea of what my impression of the place is like today. Granted it was never Mayberry but at least we could roam the woods hunting squirrel and rabbit, without being abducted. We could coast our bikes down from LaCitidale screaming all the way in excitement, not fear of being mugged or shot. I do not think I shall go back again!

Would have been nicer if our cell phones would have worked there along with the GPS. Road at the entrance by the light should have been marked better. We were there for a family memorial service in the area. Only ate once at Wendy's across the street from the hotel.

If you enjoy quiet surroundings this the place to be but, there isn't really nothing to do for excitement.. The page needs to be updated and tell more about Hazard. Give better directions to place to go and time of closings.

Love this hometown of my husband.
Love this hometown of my husband. It is growing up quite a bit--a lot of construction, but the "downtown" area is just gorgeous. Best parts of our short stay: America's Best Value Inn Motel and the Big Blue Smokehouse!!!!!!
The staff are very nice. They made check-in/out smooth and easy, and the receptionist even offered to help me with my bags. The refrigerator in the room was also pretty big for a hotel. The refrigerator and microwave seemed to be new and almost unused. The bedding and towels were also perfectly clean. The hotel is pet-friendly, and charged $30 for my two animals, which is cheaper than I expected. Very good price, even if the quality of the building itself is a bit low. The place definitely has potential!
The shower in our room was broken we didn't know till we got up the next morning expecting a hot shower and the faucet was broken...we checked out and I told the girl it was broken and all she said was Really! It was like we didn't matter..won't visit here ever again
The beds were super nice, great location, staff wonderful. Friendly kind. Will stay again soon. Great coffee, no breakfast due to Covid restrictions. But snacks to hold you over.
