Mc Gregor is a time warp town with lots of empty buildings but quirky as well. It is very quiet except for the regular trains day and night that blow their horn 3-4 times when passing through . The Backwoods Hotel is a good experience but beware - it is a cash only business, no credit card facility

Fun River town. Lots to do.
Fun River town. Lots to do. Shopping for the ladies, lots of bars for the guys. Fun to go to the River and watch Barges go by. Very walkable. Find a spot to park, and leave your vehicle there the rest of the day.

There's not much to see in McGregor, IA.
There's not much to see in McGregor, IA. This was just a an overnight stop on my way to Chicago, IL. Most of the businesses in Downtown McGregor are either closed or are going out of business. The town is quiet with a handful of restaurants, but that is really it. There's nothing to see or do.
If you want to see sights or other historical landmarks, just 2 miles from McGregor, IA is the second oldest town in Wisconsin, Prairie du Chien. This city was a nice half-day trip.

great small town to walk around in. interesting stores and good restaurants. Ate a wonderful breakfast out on a colorful patio. Enjoyed going across the bridge to visit Wayalusing State Park. Stopped at Pike's Peak state park on the way to McGregor - incredible view of the Mississippi and the Wisconsin rivers
I knew this was a very old rustic hotel and the building was supposedly built in 1851. It had old western furnishings but the bathroom had all modern conveniences. The bed was comfortable and the AC worked fine. Their dining room was only open for dinner 4:00-8:00 and unfortunately I was unable to taste their food.
If I return to the area I will definitely try to stay there again. Unique and quaint five rooms so I won’t wait to book .
Location is great, McGregor, IA is a quaint little town right on the Mississippi - nice place to relax especially in the fall. And the lodging is interesting if you like an old building (built in the 1850s). They've done a nice job keeping the decor to look like an old-fashioned hotel.
Our visit felt a little like stepping back in time. Every part of the hotel reflected it's 150 year history. Waking up in room #1 and stepping out onto the second floor deck to over look downtown McGreger, made me feel as if it was 1890.
Great central location had a bar/pub attached to location. Served very good meals and large proportions. Nice large room with plenty of amenities. Reminded us of hotel out of the 1800s rooms located above saloon.
The owners are very nice and helpful. Anything we needed they helped us with.
The food was terrific I would suggest eating there, I had the scallops and they were prepared perfectly.
Very nice hotel and town!
