Hawaiian Sanctuary Eco Retreat Center, hotel in Pahoa

Featuring a large fitness centre and a spa with a hot tub, Sanctuary Retreat Center provides accommodation with free WiFi.

The room was open with louvered windows, letting in the natural breezes. We each had our own bed to sleep in. The outdoor shower was very refreshing, which we enjoyed very much. The bathrooms were kept clean. Receiving a complementary coffee was nice. We appreciated getting to know some of the residents.

One of the highlights of our stay was the outdoor bathtub, which proved to be a haven of relaxation and romance. Eliot, the host, made sure our stay was exceptional. His warm hospitality was evident from the moment we arrived. He showed us the site of the 2018 eruption just blocks away. It was moving and informative to hear about the impact of it in the lives of the people living there. He kindly shared some avocados from his own tree, which we enjoyed as a delicious treat during our stay. It's the little touches like these that made our experience all the more special. Overall, we had an great and relaxing time in this Hawaiian oasis. The combination of the tranquil surroundings, the inspiring Balinese style, and the thoughtful amenities provided a rest from the all the exploration and activities in Hawaii. We wholeheartedly recommend this house to anyone seeking a rejuvenating retreat in Hilo.

Located in Pahoa, 1.1 km from Kaimu Beach, Open Gate Hostel Hawaii provides accommodation with a garden, free private parking, a shared lounge and a terrace.

The vibe you find at Open Gate Hostel is hard to explain and find somewhere else. Staying here was one of the best decisions I have made throughout my two weeks in Hawaii. Staff is truly super (helpful, friendly, welcoming, helpful) and the people you meet there are just amazing. My private room was large, comfortable, and clean. Bathrooms and kitchen were very clean, too. Location is incredible.

Pahoa is smaller than Hilo but feels more authentically Hawaiian. Having said that, there is access to restaurants, a grocery store, gift shops etc. It was a good starting point for trips to a black sand beach, the volcano, the botanical gardens (a must see!), and other sites.

PAHOA is a very Large district many individual suburbs, Kalapana, Kalapana Estate Pahoa, Hawaiian Gardens, Paradise, Orchidland. Ainaloa, Leilani Estate and so forth I believe it's all part of PUNA. So it's huge... Over all I really enjoy Pahoa cause I have my best friend who lives and work in the heart of Pahoa she's is such a blessing. So Yes I Love It There. Lots of delicious places to eat at even from the side of the road, Certain days you can buy Fresh Tuna and other fish right from the Ahi Man!!! Amazing 😍

Pahoa is off of the beaten path.

Pahoa is off of the beaten path. I have come to Pahoa only to visit my family members who have lived on the island for over 10 years. The town Pahoa has added a good shopping center with Malama grocery. And Pahoa is close to the volcano and the beautiful coast. Wouldn't recommend Pahoa as a tourist destination. But if you're not the touristy type, this is the place for you.

Close to the most recent lava flows, Lava Tree State Monument, Star of the Sea Painted Church and scenic coastal drives. Nice small town with several places to eat. We particularly liked Pho 19 and the Smoothie Shack. Olympic size public pool. Lap swimming is free!

Try to go to Uncle Roberts place at the end of the road on Wednesday nights. Quite the experience. Other things around the area offer lots of lava and the state and national parks (especially the ones on the water) are amazing. Great remote place like no other.

Love Pahoa and it's aloha spirit, a community devastated and dealing with so much after last year's eruption. My visit was primarily to meet with friends and to make a minor contribution to the community struggling to rebuild and recover from Tutu Pele's "redecorating". The relocated Volcano museum was educational and Vincent made my day! Mahalo Vincent! Don't miss the opportunity for lunch or dinner at Kaleo's ….ono food!

A really beautiful place with gorgeous gardens. The owner was friendly, and had put together a list of local, queer-friendly events going on throughout the week! Having just the few, select rooms made for some great conversations with the other folks there (including the owner) and, coupled with the picturesque environment, made it feel like a stay at a high-end luxury property (despite being the same price as the basic hotels in the same region I'd looked at before). Very highly recommended! I'll be coming back!

My favorite Hostel from now on, i would call the whole area with private rooms more like HOTEL instead of HOSTEL

The room was amazing! Beautifully appointed with marble floors, massive bathroom with rain forest walk-in shower, jacuzzi tub, automatic toilet/bidet, Great view of ocean, pool and hot tub right outside the door. Secluded location was mostly quiet (see below). Host was very friendly and accomodating without being intrusive. When I told them we had a daughter and granddaughter nearby they generously offered to have us invite them over to use the pool and hot tub.

Location outside Pahoa was beautiful and calm; distinct from Hilo. There was easy access to downtown Pahoa and it was an easy drive to Hilo. The grounds were lovely and the interior unique. The kitchen facilities were as expected. There was an excellent guide book that we found very useful in guiding our travels. As I started doing pottery in retirement, I appreciated that the owner, a potter, showed me his kiln and lovely pots. One of them came home with me.

Raven and Mark are incredible hosts and have created an amazing lodge in Big Island. Off the beaten path but yet close to town, it's the perfect escape. The suite was huge with a beautiful garden and outdoor shower. In the morning, Raven made delicious breakfast with eggs, toast and fruit presented very artistically! Rest of the day we spent in nearby beaches and also watched gorgeous sunsets from their lanai. Can't recommend this place enough!

Absolutely fantastic breakfast prepared by Jim personally. Every day different homemade meal, mostly from products grown in the garden. We had an issue to eat everything what was served and everything was excellent. Lovely place in the middle of community area surrounded by the nature. Great place to explore Volcano park and whole southeast coast of Big Island few minutes drive from Pahoa city center.

we loved our time here! Irene is the BEST host. Thank you for the wonderful hospitality, and the lovely chats. This is far from your typical hotel experience, but we loved the uniqueness of it. And Irene has so many great tips on what to do while you’re on the Big Island. Highly recommend staying here; thank you Irene and hope to see you again one day!

Raven and Marc are the sweetest hosts ever. They took so much care of us, and their dedication is incredible. This is really a true local experience , don’t go if you are afraid of little critters, or expect a Hilton hotel. We cannot recommend this more for adventurous families, or friends, or couples that want to experience the real Hawaii !

They sent not only detailed driving directions and instructions regarding the property but also information about nearby beaches, stores, restaurants etc. Moreover, they refunded the deposit for the non-refundable booking that we had to cancel in 2020 because of Covid 19.
