We stopped here on our way from Kruger to Drakensberg and we were very happy that we did. In the middle of a large field, it's a place of peace and quiet (well, except for the pleasant sound of birds and such). Ronelle and Johan were very friendly hosts.

The view from the rooms were fabulous and the game grazing on the lawn in front of the rooms a bonus. The whole atmosphere one of peace and quiet. The rooms are modern and simply beautiful.
The staff were friendly and our rooms were upgraded at no cost, what a pleasant surprise!
We were traveling with Classic Cars and one had a V belt problem, which was sorted out by the workshop staff in no time, and sincerely appreciated.
The food was exceptional, very reasonably priced and the service excellent. Can't wait to go back!

Wakkerstroom has a natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere. The place is steeped in history. Every single person we met was friendly and prepared to save us some of his/her time to answer questions or give directions or advice.
I suppose this is life as it should be.

Quiet Village when we visited on a Tuesday.
Quiet Village when we visited on a Tuesday. Apparently the locals weekend is Mondays and Tuesdays and the Village experience more visitors over weekends. We had lunch at their Historical Hotel who had a menu that caters for everyone. We had outstanding Lamb Curry and tasteful thin base Pizza.
Their big wetlands at the bottom of the town had a lot of birdlife which must be explored over a few days.

Wakkerstroom is a well-known town, most especially for Birding, on the border of the Mpumalanga and Kwazulu-Natal provinces. I highly recommend booking one of the excellent birding guides that the town has to offer, if you are going birding. There are a few restaurants around the small town, and I had good experiences at the ones I tried (Red Rooster and Country Inn). The entire town is basically along a 3km or so long main strip of road. The side roads are all dirt roads, so I recommend a vehicle with high clearance, if not a 4x4. There is a single petrol station (Total) in the whole town along the main road, and I did not see Diesel fuel being sold there. Volksrust (23km away) has more options for fuel, as well as a SuperSPAR if need be. Take a jacket along, as the weather can change anytime, especially between morning and evening.

We went to do an organised Bird Watching Tour.
We went to do an organised Bird Watching Tour. It was exceptional. Some of the active Birders saw at least 10 new species, and our one member got to his number 500 on this tour.
We ate in the local restaurants and also bought meat for a braai.
We stayed in Semi Soet, really exceptional.

Wakkerstroom is quaint and well looked after little town.
Wakkerstroom is quaint and well looked after little town. Clean and quiet, with great opportunity to do bird watching and if you're really lucky, you may spot the elusive otters down by the bridge.
This is a quiet retreat for hikers and twitchers alike but come nightfall you may enjoy a wholesome and salubrious meal at a number of places in and around the main st. The nightlife may be a little less vigorous than some big cities or towns but you can still enjoy a superbly made gin & tonic at The Garret with choice of botanicals and fruit to complement it!
Overall the impression was of really being able to switch off and enjoy good clean air and wholesome goodness, like back in the old days...

A lovely little town with friendly people and good food.
A lovely little town with friendly people and good food. best Gin and Tonic's at The Garret in Badenhorst Street. Time out serves good elegant food. lots of bars and restaurants 3 hours from Johannesburg. Wakkerstroom and its surroundings are located in the Mpumalanga Province in South Africa and is a MUST for birders, it accommodates all three of South Africa’s crane species. You can also find numbers of Wattled Crane Bugeranus carunculatus. The neighbouring Heyshope Dam has at least 52 species of resident, migratory and nomadic waterbirds.
