Explore and find hotels on the Faroe Islands

Green, rugged, windswept and blissfully isolated, the Faroe Islands may well be Europe’s best-kept secret. There are 18 islands in total – all connected by road tunnels, ferries, causeways and bridges – which combine to create a challenging adventure playground for lovers of the great outdoors. The most dramatic scenery can be found on the Northern Islands, where looming basalt cliffs reveal the islands’ volcanic origin. Hire a car and drive through the heart of this stunning landscape, or see it from the water, with a boat trip starting in Tórshavn, the nation’s capital on Streymoy Island. This surprisingly modern city is the gateway to the Faroe Islands’ biggest draw: the towering bird cliffs of Vestmanna, home to thousands of puffins, kittiwakes and gannet. The western island of Vágar is equally as enticing. Here you’ll find Sørvágsvatn, a scenic freshwater lake hanging on a cliff edge, and the village of Gásadalur, where an icy waterfall tumbles into the ocean. Over in the east, Eysturoy Island tempts hikers with the archipelago’s highest peak, the 882-metre-high Slættaratindur, where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views. The landscapes of the Southern Islands may not be as dramatic, but what they lack in natural wonder they make up for in friendliness. Most hotels and guesthouses are concentrated in Tórshavn, though there are some others available on Vágar and Eysturoy. There are private apartments and homes available to rent on all islands except the most remote.
