A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.
Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.
The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.
The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.
Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

Paying for bus tickets was pain as no cash is taken - drivers are very generous letting us travel free but I dislike not paying my dues . Cash will be useable sometimes during 2024. From City Walk we walked to War Memorial - spent all day there. Poppy Cafe is good. Tickets free but book a slot on time. Slot is 2 hours but if u need more just ask one of the many room guides if they can extend your ticket. Grab a free tour of highlights when u arrive. Takes almost your 2 hours but guide will fix an extension. For seriously interested visitors (like us) they offered to give us all day. Also there is a separate Last Post ceremony every day. Needs separate ticket. Best view point is on 'balcony' overlooking Eternal Flame or in the open air (at balcony level) furthest away from Eternal Flame. It,s all free so buy a 5 AUD guide book or make a donation. As for Parliament visit (both places have airport style security checks) that also is deffo worth time. the Museum of Australia was different and interesting - several good cinema type films to watch. Visitor Centre in Commonwealth Park is a good first stop. Lovely lakeside walks decent cafe and very interesting story of how Canberra was built from scratch. Helpful staff and free leaflets. We could have filled 5 days rather than 3.

We were disappointed. We went there for a weekend.
We were disappointed. We went there for a weekend. There was no hop on hop off buses in the weekend, why not? It should be a lof of tourist in the weekend. We bought My way tickets instead, but the buses in Canberra have such small writing on the screen that says next stop that we couldn read it, and the volume was so low that we couldnt hear it in any of the buses (and we are NOT hard of hearing!). On top of that, the bus to the railway station didn,t go to the station. There was no message that said that, and no exception on the description of the stops. We went too far and realized it. Locals that helped us to find the way told us this happend all the time. If that is so, why don,t you fix the information?

pleasant to walk around, feels really safe, lots of museums and galleries

THe city what we managed to see, is a great place to visit, and easy to to get around. It is a clean city, with lots of parks, and attractions. The lake and the lookouts from the hills.
Then the autumn colors at the right time of the year. Floriade in Commonwealth Park with all those beautiful Spring Flowers.
Canberra is certainly a city worth visiting , any time of the year.

There is plenty to see in Canberra and this was my 2nd time in 4 months, once with my 15yr old grandson and latest with husband.
Always good exhibitions in the various Galleries and Museums and both Houses of Parliament are worth the visit, specifcally Old Parliament House with the various displays of interest. Questacon is a must for all ages.
With my grandson we hired bikes for the day and had a great time cycling to all the venues. he loved lunching at Parliament House and the State Library and finally cycling to the War Memorial.
I really like this hotel, quite even it is in the city center. It's close to canberra center (mall) and lot of restaurants around and bar. Walkable to Alinga tram station, CMAG and other tourist spot can be visited by bus, there's bus station in front of this hotel. The room is so clean, and the mini kitchen is equipped with things you need to cook if you're on a budget. Also, we came so early around 11am and they let us checked in without additional cost. Thank you!
The wonderful helpful, thoughtful staff who went out of their way to make this a wonderful stay. Large room overlooking the beautiful gardens. really comfortable beds, a bath, windows that open so we had fresh air and didn’t need the air conditioner. Quiet. access to the Hale well-being centre which is part of the hotel. Great gym. I’ve stayed in many hotels in Canberra and have been coming here for many years. The Brassey has been by far the best and the best value.
2BR apartment was clean, rooms were well appointed with all you'd need for a long-term stay with a family.. Linen was lovely, as you'd expect.
Loved that the apartment had semi-private access, shared with only one other apartment so there were no slamming doors or foot traffic issues.
Brilliantly located for all the Canberra attractions/shops/essentials.
Staff were excellent.
Room was clean and very big. Bathroom very spacious. Sheets and carpet were very clean. Loved that this hotel had their own rooftop bar and pool. Hotel was very well-located, only a short walk to Lonsdale street which has loads of cafes, shops and restaurants. Free parking on site was a plus!
We will definitely stay again when we visit Canberra.
The atmosphere was great with a real feel of traditional hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful. Ashleigh was so lovely to deal with and booked us in a suitable room.
The location is fantastic for visiting Parliament house and museums.
We will certainly stay here again if we were to visit Canberra in the future.
Exceptionally well presented Hotel. Staff were very helpful, including cleaning staff and front desk reception. Beautifully decorated, including the foyer and rooms which were super clean. Rooms were very comfortable and felt like almost new.
The room exceeded our expectations. The Lux decor, modern clever design, very comfortable bed. The bathroom and room is exceptionally spacious. I have already recommended this to friends and family. This is my preferred hotel from now on.
This is the 12th time we stayed at the hotel. It is an amazing hotel, in Canberra centre. The breakfast is quite good and the staff are amazing. It is truly their people in Crowne Plaza Canberra which makes us come back every time.
Location is perfect. It’s right in the middle of the city, walking distance from Canberra Centre and many other shops, cafes and restaurants. The room is very clean, comfortable and up to the standards of Quest hotels.
Very central location with clean room and comfortable beds.
The park next to the hotel is a bonus for families travelling with kids.
Dinners are nice at the on-site restaurant.
Overall is good value for money.
