FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Have been to York a few times as very interested in Roman and Viking history. Excavations still revealing interesting relics. 2,000 years of quite well documented history, means that York is a go to city, as and when you can. The tourist attractions are worth visiting such as the Jorvik centre, ghost walks, ghost tour bus, Anne Fairfax house, war museum and the train museum, just to name a few. A walk around’The Wall’ is a must as is visiting the Minster. The ‘hop on hop off’ bus is a good way to get around the city as a lot of walking is involved. Lots of good pubs and good food outlets at reasonable prices.

York has to be one of the best cities in the UK to visit with so so much to do and see! The history and sights speak for themselves. What an amazing city. Hmmm if you enjoy the atmosphere of a city at night ?? and we do ! I would probably avoid York when the horse racing is on !! Crowded , stag do’s, drunks and a little edgy didn’t make the best atmosphere! To be avoided unless that’s your thing of course!

York is full of history. So much to see and do.

York is full of history. So much to see and do. Very friendly people every where. Highly recommend the Army museum and Jorvik Viking Museum. Harry Potter fans will love Shambles Alley with the Harry Potter shop. The Perky Peacock cafe down by the river looks like Hagrid's hut. Sells good coffee. Shambles Market was very good as well. We ate at The Windmill Inn which is a pub on Blossom Street. Great staff and good selection of food. Pizza Hut was also some where else we ate. Clifford Tower was great to go up for views of the city. Very steep steps up and very narrow steps going up to the tower so might not be suitable for all. The wall is a good walk as well. Plenty of buses about if you don't wish to walk everywhere. We stayed at Bar Convent so everything was within a 15 minute walk.

We were given an unexpected upgrade to a far superior room than the one we had booked. We really appreciated this upgrade . The staff were very attentive and courteous. We had breakfast and evening meal at the hotel and the food was excellent. It is our second stay at this hotel and it will be our "go-to" hotel for our future trips to York. Its location just a 10 minute walk from the city centre is ideal for us. Many thanks, Peter and Colleen.

This is a complex of restored historic buildings. They have 42 rooms in different buildings. I had booked the lowest priced room and asked for a quiet room. When I arrived the staff said they had upgraded my room (for free) to give me a quiet room. That was nice. I loved the bathtub and the bed was comfortable. The hotel was just over the river from the historic part of York, maybe a 15 minute walk.

Gorgeous, clean and cozy, this hotel is probably the best place in York. The staff is excellent, certainly very well trained and very kind. Their teamwork was very good. Rooms are gorgeous.
