Awara is known for its hot springs—clear and not sulfuric—and for its fresh seafood from the Japan Sea. While there are a few other attractions like the Tojimbo Cliffs, the main event is the hot springs served up in a number of ways through public foot hot springs to a huge hot springs center called Saint Peia and a number of ryokans. If having an immersive hot spring experience at a ryokan is the aim, Awara is excellent. If looking for a lot of activity, Awara may be a non-starter. We went for a luxurious ryokan experience, and its hot springs, service, and meals (including a kaiseki dinner) impressed and revived us.
