The seven hells of Beppu (Jigoku) are really great to fill a day. You can have a nice walk along the shoreline and the mall near the bay offers a great shopping opportunity. There are a few good restaurants that you can enjoy. The neighborhood around the Jigoku is quite nice, the rest of Beppu not so much. Two or three days are enough for this town.

We didn't have enough time to see other onsen areas.
We didn't have enough time to see other onsen areas. We did not rent a car so we traveled by bus. We did not get to see the onsen areas as I did want to try some of the other ryokan onsens. The only problem I had was with the stools that you sit on to swcrub yourself.

I really enjoyed the hot springs!
I really enjoyed the hot springs! I went to Hyotan Onsen and did the hot springs and sand bath. the sand bath was a little underwhelming but the hot springs was perfect! there was also a waterfall bath which was a nice experience. the sand bath was a "do it yourself" situation where you dig a hole and cover yourself. it was nice; i recall i fell asleep. It was a little underwhelming; i would do just the hot springs again though! Also, the sand bath area was kind of small and co-ed, 7-8 rows and probably fit 4 people per row. Other than that, Hyotan had a dining restaurant and tried the cold ramen; refreshing after a nice hot dip! Getting around Beppu was easy for me. i was mostly around just the hot spring area and the area of the 7 devil hot springs (which i ran out of time and did not get to do all but was happy i got to do at least 5). the area was also kind of hilly... so one may be walking uphill a bit but no big deal, not a steep incline. Overall, Beppu was a great experience and I would come back for the hot springs as it's what the town is known for!

Nice family onsen onsite but there was a small charge.
Nice family onsen onsite but there was a small charge. Breakfast was fabulous. Served in a cubicle for my family of 3. Free basement parking at the hotel and more than sufficient parking lots. Nice also that the bus boy was right at our car once we drove in and helped to carry our bags.

There are only 8 Hells of Beppu to visit. 1-2 days is just right. Plenty of good restaurants in town. Michelin Guide restaurant called "Arabata" is highly recommended. They serve the best beef in town and the price is reasonable!

Beppu is one of the smallest cities I've visited in Japan.
Beppu is one of the smallest cities I've visited in Japan. Surprisingly, many people here speak English due to frequent interactions with non-Japanese visitors. The city is famous for its hot springs, boasting numerous traditional Japanese onsen. During winter, the city takes on a magical and mysterious ambiance due to the steam and mist enveloping it. The locals are friendly and very helpful. While getting around by bus is convenient, taking a walk through the city of spirits is an experience one should miss.
Liked the location and total concept of the hotel. It was rich with an architectural design, simple and elegant, that gave the feeling of open spaces. Breakfast was great with abundant refills. Also used and loved the Onsen on the 14th floor, rooftop pool, gym and laundromat.
My room was designed very well with an acute detail for maximizing space. From the little seat and table to the frig. Even my hot pot heater was beautifully selected. It was copper with a long spout, great for making my coffee.
The hotel is directly on Beppu bay, we had a great sea view from our room and could see the sunrise. The structure is a bit dated but has various advantages including the size of the room and the bathroom (we chose the Japanese room), the comfort of the tatami, the cleanliness, the quality of the bath and onsen products, the 'private onsen for couples or families, parking. The typical Japanese breakfast is excellent and very accurate. The staff does not speak English but is very helpful and kind.
Hotel was in a great location, and within short walking distance to a great japanese restaurant across the junction, near to convenience stores too. The breakfast was sumptuous with a great spread. Staffs were very friendly, polite and helpful. Room was simple setup, but very clean and comfortable. The onsen was an indoor one, and it was a great experience. As i was driving, and searching for the parking, the staff was helpful and guiding me to the correct parking spot in the hotel premise.
This was a different experience from our usual hotel stay but one that we greatly enjoyed. Our hosts treated us with green tea. We don’t speak any Japanese and our hosts little English but we got by with hand gestures and nods. The house is over 100 years old and a bit drafty for a cold day in Beppu but a room heater kept us comfortable. An onsen was located right across from the house entrance with men and women separate entry doors. Put 100 yen in the metal box to enter.
Modern hotel in this onsen town which was the perfect base to explore the Hells of Beppu. Less than 5 minutes walk from JR Beppu station. The staff were very professional and spoke good english. The hotel had an onsen at level 12 which provided a nice view. The laundry room had 4 machines that did washing and drying altogether so it was very convenient. One cycle for about 3kg of clothes took 2 hours in total. The triple room was considered quite spacious.
Stunning place in the heart of the old Beppu near the Hells of Beppu, incredible place built like a maze but in the coolest way, you can cook over the hot spring steams, the rooms are traditional Japanese style and extremely cozy with good views. Downstairs there's 2 public Onsen and a few streets over there is a private Onsen to enjoy too. The staff is incredibly nice too. Probably the coolest place I've ever stayed at.
Brilliant location, hardly 5-7 minutes walk away from Beppu train Station. Check-in is at 4PM but you can leave your luggage and explore the city. With a lush green garden and authentically styled rooms - our stay was relaxing and comfortable. There's a private indoor and outdoor onsen too. We were served an excellent spread of Japanese breakfast. Only tip, If you have heavy luggage, just request for ground floor room.
While the whole Hotel is charming and the private onsen and Japanese style rooms are exactly what I came for , I was positively surprised by the extremely high quality of dinner and breakfast.
Both dinner menues were exquisite and easily rank in the top 3 dinners I had this year. Room and bath were well kept and clean, very comfortable futon (not too soft).
Staff made sure to make me feel welcome.
Location of the hotel by the sea, near the beppu tower, there are convenience stores and shopping malls such as Donkey within walking distance. The hotel has 2 onsens: an outdoor pool overlooking the sea and an indoor pool. The food that has both breakfast and dinner in Japanese style. Overall of the food tastes very good. Quality of food is very good. Fresh and stylish, looks sentimental.
Conveniently located just a couple of minutes away from the train station and bus stop, with plenty of restaurants and onsen at walking distance. Other areas, such as the jigoku (hells), easily reachable by bus from the station. Staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was a set menu but was good. Room was ok and the hotel has a laundry room (washing-drying machines).
If you want to experience a traditional Japanese hotel (Ryokan) in Oita prefecture this is the place to stay!
Room is big, clean and has a perfect view of Beppu city.
Very good breakfast and dinner (served in the room).
Private parking available.
The possibility to book the private onsen for 50 minutes was the cherry on the cake.
It is a modernize ryokan with Japanese tradition. It is located within a residential area which is very quiet and not busy at all. The hotel is very clean and staffs here are super friendly with great service. We have an oversize private onsen in our room which is the one big thing that we enjoy our stay here.
I like the exciting architecture of the hotel and spacious rooms, and having my onsen in the apartment. We both have tattoos, so here we've been comfortable like at home. Also, we had two types of vegetarian breakfast, which was delicious.
Indoor and outdoor onsen was really great and clean. All necessary facilities included. Room just fit 2 people and 2 large suitcases. Bus stops right next to the hotel or just across the road. Otherwise 10 minute walk to Beppu station.
Cheap apartment right in the centre of Beppu close to most of the onsen and the shopping and of course the "vice" streets. Walking to a lot of the onsen here takes a few minutes. Full kitchen and Laundry are within the apartment,
The interiors and design of the hotel were gorgeous. Truly captured the feeling of a traditional Japanese inn. The breakfast was flavorful and well-balanced. The outdoor onsen was lovely and had he perfect temperature.
Excellent location, directly across the road from the main train station. Staff were very helpful. Onsen facilities were great. Room was clean and spacious considering most Japanese hotel rooms are tiny.
Very good location closed to Beppu Station. This hotel is very old but renovated. Rooms were great. Onsen was fir due to crowded guests and quiet worn out facilities.
